Roseburg, OR – Wheelchair-bound resident OK after sprinkler system extinguishes apartment fire

Around midnight on April 8, the Roseburg Fire Department was dispatched to a fire in apartment #204 in the Grand Apartments at 730 SE Cass Ave.  Fire officials say it was contained to the studio apartment and extinguished by the building’s automatic fire sprinkler system.

The wheelchair-bound resident was found sitting on the floor when firefighters entered the room, the report said. He was evaluated for smoke inhalation and transported to Mercy Medical Center where he was released later Friday morning.

Investigators say the fire was most likely caused by the apartment’s 60-year-old resident, who discarded a cigarette in a paper-filled trash can near a kitchen cabinet. The building’s automatic sprinkler system activated within three minutes, extinguishing the flames, which had begun climbing to the ceiling of the apartment.

Windsor, ON, Canada – Fire at senior high-rise apartment building controlled by sprinkler system

Fire broke out late Wednesday night in a unit in a high-rise apartment building across from Coventry Gardens in Windsor. John Lee, with Windsor Fire and Rescue, says no one was injured.

“We got a call about 10:15 p.m. to the Amica building. It is a vulnerable occupancy [building]. It’s a nursing [and] rest home, senior’s living. There was a fire on the second floor in one of the units. The sprinkler system activated. The resident got out safely,” he said.

Windsor Fire and Rescue says because the sprinklers activated and kept the fire under control. An investigator will look into what started the fire on Riverside Drive, near Pillette Road.

Auburn, AL – Overnight fire at retail store contained by sprinkler system

A fire early Saturday night at Kinnucan’s on Donahue Drive has temporarily closed the Auburn location as store personnel work to assess damage. According to Auburn Fire Division Chief John Lankford, Kinnucan’s suffered a “small fire” Saturday around 2 a.m.

“When we arrived on scene, smoke and flames were visible on the College Street side of the complex,” Lankford said. “The fire was contained near the origin because the building’s sprinkler system activated. There was very little fire damage, but the water from the sprinkler got some of the merchandise wet. The fire originated near the sign that was mounted on the wall, and the fire cause is still under investigation.”

Kinnucan’s president and CEO Bobby Lake said he estimates the Auburn store will be closed about two to four weeks. “We did have a small fire in the attic area of the store, which the fire department did an incredible job getting put out rather quickly,” Lake said. “Unfortunately with fire comes a lot of water and a lot of smoke, so that’s the problem we’re dealing with now.”

Lake added that the volume of merchandise affected by the fire will prove a bigger problem than cleanup and building repairs.

“The most difficult will be the loss of the product in the store because even though the fire didn’t get to it, the smoke and the water in some cases did, so most of the stuff we carry, you can’t necessarily order in time,” Lake said. “It’s seasonal, so a lot of the spring products had come in, and so the opportunity to replace it, we’re just going to have to see what that is.”

Kinnucan’s has moved its annual A-Day player signing scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon this Saturday to its Tiger Town store in Opelika. Auburn players Cassanova McKinzy, Ricardo Louis, Shon Coleman and Peyton Barber will be signing autographs and interacting with the public. The event is free to the public and will also feature food and inflatables.

“We’re open in Tiger Town, and thankfully it (the fire) happened in the middle of the night, so nobody got hurt and again, what a great job the fire department did at getting the fire put out quickly,” Lake said.

Smithers, BC, Canada – Arson fire at sawmill controlled by sprinkler system

A 49-year-old man is reportedly in police custody, in connection with two fires at the Pacific Inland Resources sawmill in Smithers.  RCMP and the Smithers Fire Department were called to the mill shortly after 10pm last night.

Fire chief Keith Stecko says mill employees activated fire supression systems quickly. “PIR has a sprinkler system in its building so the system quickly detected the fire and was able to control it; when we arrived we put out some spot fires, but the sprinklers largely did the work,” he said.

Stecko says it appears some sort of accelerant was used — and there was considerable damage.  “We’re estimating between $50,000 to perhaps $100,000; we are currently investigating what was used to start the fire, so we’re not sure at this point what it was,” he said.

San Antonio, TX – Fire at Riverwalk restaurant contained by sprinkler system; No other business affected

An overnight fire inside Tony Roma’s restaurant at the Shops at Rivercenter mall has left the business with heavy damage. The restaurant was not open when the fire broke out shortly after 1 a.m. Monday, and no one battling the fire suffered any injuries.

Fire officials said the fire started in a pile of towels on top of a cabinet. The fire spread to a storage area where wine and plastic containers were kept. Firefighters who responded to the fire said the sprinkler system had gone off, dumping water on the flames but also causing water damage inside the business. There was about 2-3 inches of water on the floor of the restaurant.

Firefighters said the restaurant also sustained some smoke damage. A hazardous materials team and an arson team were called to the scene to investigate, but officials said it appears the cause of the fire was accidental. No other businesses at the mall were affected.

Mexico, MO – Overnight fire in utility closet at Catholic school extinguished by sprinkler system

At approximately 1 a.m. Wednesday, Mexico Department of Public Safety was called to St. Brendan School on Clark Street. Officers arriving on the scene found light smoke and evidence of the sprinkler system having activated.

Upon investigation, it was discovered that cardboard boxes in a utility room had been ignited by the water heater. The sprinklers had extinguished the small fire. There was very little damage from fire or smoke and there were no injuries. The fire did not cause any damage to the main building of the school.

St. Brendan Principal Kathy Coulson said students would be bringing their lunches for a few days so the school’s kitchen and gymnasium areas, which are near the storage room in which the fire started, could be cleaned of some smoke. Coulson said the school’s sprinkler system will also be replaced in the near future

Prestonsburg, KY – Electrical fire at state park lodge contained by sprinkler system

The lodge at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park near Prestonsburg is temporarily closed after a fire late Tuesday. The fire started because of a problem with an electrical panel, according to the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet. No injuries were reported, and the sprinkler system contained the fire to a lounge area.

The lodge will likely open in a few days after repairs have been made, said Don Parkinson, secretary of the cabinet. The convention center and cabins will remain open

Knoxville, TN – Grocery store fire put out by sprinkler system; Store quickly returns to normal operations

Fire crews filled the parking lot at a North Knoxville grocery store Monday night after a vent fire in a back bathroom filled the store with smoke. The call came just before 10 p.m. at Kroger, 2217 N. Broadway, in the Broadway Shopping Center. Crews say the fire appeared to have started accidentally in an electrical vent in a back bathroom. The store’s sprinkler did its job and put the fire out.

The store filled with smoke and 20 people were evacuated. Investigators say no one was injured. Knoxville Fire Department spokesman Capt. D.J. Corcoran says fire inspectors were called to the scene to address inventory storage practices as store stock was blocking the cutoff for the sprinkler system.

The store later returned to normal operations

Olympia, WA – Sprinkler system knocks down fire at apartment complex

One family was displaced from an apartment at 1309 Fern St. SE in west Olympia late Friday after a fire, according to the Olympia Fire Department. Firefighters responded to reports of a kitchen fire and found that the sprinkler system had activated by the time they arrived. One resident sustained cuts to the hand after breaking open a glass door to access a fire extinguisher. No other injuries were reported.

Damage to the apartment was estimated at about $5,000. The fire likely was an electrical fire. The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross. The rest of the apartment complex was undamaged. The Olympia Fire Department responded to the fire with four engines, one ladder truck, two medic units and a command unit
