Sacramento, CA – Restaurant saved by sprinkler system following early morning fire

Firefighters are investigating after a small fire that damaged a Sacramento restaurant early Monday morning. Fire crews were called to the Shabu Pub on Freeport Boulevard. Both the burglar and fire alarms were going off. Firefighters say the front door had been broken into and a small fire was burning in the kitchen. The sprinkler system was activated, the business was saved.

Wilmington, NC – Sprinkler system extinguished fire at apartment complex; No injuries reported

The Wilmington Fire Department is responding to a fire at an apartment complex this morning.

Assistant Chief of Operations Tom Robinson said were dispatched to residential structure fire at 719 Indica Court, apt. 101 just before 7:00 a.m.

Robinson said crews arrived to find light smoke coming from front door. He said there was a fire on the stove due to cooking with extension to the over-stove microwave. He said the fire was extinguished by the sprinkler system. The fire was extinguished by 7:05 a.m.

There was no other damage to the apartment. Crews remain on scene to remove smoke from the apartment.

Robinson said there are no injuries to residents or fire personnel.

Urbana, IL – Fire at campus restaurant held in check by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

The basement of the nearly 80-year-old Illini Union at the University of Illinois campus in Urbana-Champaign has reopened after a fire forced it to close for several hours.

Chief Urbana Fire Investigators Jeremy Leevey told the (Champaign) News-Gazette that crews responded to a small fire at Einstein Bros. Bagels at about 6:15 a.m. Thursday. Leevey says the union’s sprinkler system and firefighters were able to put out the fire. He says the cause is undetermined. Leevey says the restaurant has smoke damage but the dollar loss was minimal.

The university’s Illini Alert system issued a message about 6:30 a.m. Thursday saying there was a fire at the union and to avoid or leave the area immediately.

No injuries were reported. Officials say the union is fully operational.

Colorado Springs, CO – Sprinkler system activated for fire at manufacturing building

The Colorado Springs Fire Department was called to a structure fire in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Smoke was visible from the manufacturing building Foxworth-Galbraith Truss & Wall Systems on Interpark Dr. but no flames were reported.

CSFD said the buildings’ smoke detectors and sprinkler systems were activated but the fire hydrants nearby were not working properly.

Firefighters had to call for back up and quickly began to ventilate the building.

Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire and the extent of any damages.

Burlington, NC – Sprinkler system activated for fire involving two businesses; No injuries reported

Two Tucker Street businesses were affected by fire early Thursday morning, April 11.

At 5:09 a.m., the Burlington Fire Department responded to 413 Tucker St., where Haand Pottery and TS Designs operate. The sprinkler system activated, and personnel contained the fire due to an isolated area. The fire was under control in about 20 minutes.

No one was in the building during the fire and no injuries were reported.

The businesses expect to reopen within a few days, once electricity and water are restored.

“We feel very fortunate. The fire department did a fantastic job,” said Chris Pence, Haand Pottery co-owner.

The fire damaged a small area of the floor inside Haand Pottery, but didn’t threaten the building’s safety or structure, Pence said.

Eric Henry, president of TS Designs, said most of the damage was water-related. He expected the company’s dye facility to be up and running some time next week.

The fire department estimated damages at about $25,000 to the structure and $125,000 to the contents. The cause of the fire was still under investigation Thursday.

Burlington police, Alamance County EMS and Duke Energy responded to the fire as well.

Binghamton, NY – Early morning arson fire at boarding house extinguished by sprinkler system

The Binghamton Police Department says a man has been charged with intentionally setting a fire on Henry Street. Police say the fire at 106 Henry Street, the “DIXIE 2000” rooming house, was reported at 6:16 a.m. Monday. According to detectives, an investigation found that the first-floor office was broken into before being doused with a liquid accelerant and ignited, which caused an explosion and significant damage. Officials say the fire was extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system and all residents got out safely. Police say the suspect, who had left before officers arrived, was later identified as 59-year-old Jerry Hopkins of neighboring 104 Henry Street.

He was charged with second-degree arson, a class B felony. The incident was investigated by the Binghamton Police Patrol and Detective Divisions as well as the Fire Marshal’s Office. State Fire K-9 also assisted at the scene. Anyone with additional information is asked to call detectives at (607) 772-7080.

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Police and fire officials were called to a fire on Henry Street in Binghamton Monday morning.

According to Binghamton Fire Marshal Alan Gardiner, the sprinkler system inside 106 Henry Street put out the fire.

Gardiner said investigators haven’t determined a cause for the fire, but he called it suspicious.

Members of the Binghamton Fire Department, Binghamton Police Department and New York State fire officials responded to the scene.

Newark, DE – No injuries in fire at high-rise student housing complex; Sprinkler system contained fire

No one was injured in an early morning fire at a high rise student housing complex behind the Newark Shopping Center, the Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Co. reported. At 2:36 a.m., Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company along with mutual aid from Christiana Fire, Cranston Heights Fire Company,Mill Creek Fire Company – Stations 2&21, andMinquas Firewere dispatched to 1 Easton Court.

Crews arrived to the six-story wood-framed 220 unit high rise structure to find a fire on the 4th floor with the sprinkler system containing the blaze. Firefighters credited the sprinkler system for minimizing what could have been a serious situation. Thirty six units sustained water damage and building management assisted displaced students, who are now in other housing including hotels. No one was injured. Newark Delaware Police Department and the Newark Fire Marshal’s Office also responded to the incident.

Vancouver, WA – Attic fire at clothing store controlled by sprinkler system

A failed electric conduit in the attic of a small store in the Bagley Downs neighborhood was the cause of Sunday’s two-alarm fire, according to the Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office. Fire personnel responded about 5:10 a.m. to Novedades Lizy, a women’s clothing store located in a strip mall at 5904 N.E. Fourth Plain Blvd., after a passer-by reported smoke coming from the building, Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said. The fire was contained within 30 minutes of firefighters entering the building with a hose and cutting a hole in the room to allow smoke to escape, according to a Sunday press release from the Vancouver Fire Department. No one was inside the building when the blaze started.

“Fortunately, the building was equipped with a fire sprinkler system, which quickly activated and controlled the fire in the attic until firefighters arrived to complete the extinguishment,” Scarpelli said. The fire was ruled accidental and damages are estimated at $66,000. No one was displaced, but two businesses will be closed until repairs are complete, Scarpelli said.

Falmouth, MA – Sprinkler system extinguishes electrical fire at restaurant

The sprinkler system in the Ninety-Nine Restaurant at 30 Davis Straights in Falmouth extinguished a fire in the basement before firefighters arrived on Saturday morning, February 2.

An early-morning cleaning crew called firefighters at 5:11 AM when they discovered smoke alarms sounding, an odor of smoke, and the basement sprinklers activated, Falmouth Deputy Fire Chief Scott J. Thrasher said.

Firefighters opened the back door to let water out of the basement, shut off the electricity to the building, and notified the owner of the restaurant and the town’s building and health departments.

As soon as possible, firefighters reactivated the unaffected electrical circuits to keep the hot water and the freezers working to avoid further damage to the restaurant.

Deputy Chief Thrasher said that the fire is under active investigation, but the fire department believes the fire was related to electrical equipment in the basement.

“Ninety-Nine is trying to get back up and running for tonight,” he said, referring to Saturday night.

Fargo, ND – Fire on 14th floor of residential high-rise contained with help from sprinkler system; No injuries reported

An automatic sprinkler helped contain a fire in an apartment on the 14th floor of the 22-story Fargo Lashkowitz High Rise. Firefighters were called to the fire at 101 2nd St. S. at around 6:15 a.m. Saturday. A man inside the apartment was removed to safety and evaluated by FM Ambulance. No one was injured. The Fargo Housing Authority had crews on scene to take over clean up before fire crews had cleared. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
