San Diego, CA – Sprinkler system extinguished early morning laboratory fire; No injuries reported

A fire early Wednesday in a second-floor laboratory in a Qualcomm building in Sorrento Valley was put out by sprinklers before firefighters arrived, San Diego Fire-Rescue officials said.

The fire was reported around 6:40 a.m. in a four-story building on McKellar Court off Pacific Center Boulevard called the Qualcomm Pacific Center Campus. When crews arrived, they didn’t see any smoke or fire showing from the outside the building but when they got inside, they found a fire that had been extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system.

After searching the building to check for any spread of the fire, crews worked to ensure the fire didn’t reignite. Just under 50 firefighters from San Diego and Chula Vista had responded to the fire.

No injuries were reported. No damage estimate was immediately available. A cause of the fire also wasn’t reported.

Los Angeles, CA – Sprinkler system activated for fire at 16-story downtown high rise; No injuries reported

Sprinklers prevented a possible disaster Sunday evening when a sparking vacuum cleaner ignited a fire in an apartment of a 16-story downtown high rise.

The fire was reported at 10:45 p.m. at 255 S. Hill St., said the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Margaret Stewart.

It was in an eighth-story apartment and was held in check by sprinklers, Stewart said.

“While a few residents self-evacuated, the rest of the building is sheltering in place,” she said. “There is only light smoke in the hallway.”

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters remained at the scene to remove water from the sprinkler activation, she said.

Petaluma, CA – Sprinkler system activated for commercial building fire; No injuries reported

A commercial building caught fire late Monday night in northeast Petaluma causing minor damage, fire authorities said.

Around 11:37 p.m., sprinklers went off inside a building at 1380 Redwood Way, notifying the building’s monitoring system, which called fire dispatchers, said Jessica Power, fire marshal for the Petaluma Fire Department.

Within five minutes, Petaluma Fire Department crews arrived and found heavy black smoke coming from the single-story building’s roll up door and roof, according to a media release.

Three engines from Rancho Adobe Fire District also responded.

No one was inside when the fire occurred and there were no injuries, Powers said.

The building showed only minor damage, thanks to the sprinkler system that helped control the flames until firefighters arrived, Powers said. She said the estimated cost of damage was unknown Tuesday afternoon.

The cause is still being investigated, she said.

“This incident is a opportunity to remind our citizens that having working fire alarms, carbon dioxide alarms, and sprinkler systems can be the difference in not only damage to a structure, but also in the amount of time a person, family, or coworkers have to escape in an emergency,” the department said in the release.

Isla Vista, CA – Sprinkler system extinguishes early morning fire at restaurant

A fire-sprinkler system extinguished a small blaze at the Su’s Bowl restaurant in Isla Vista early Saturday morning.

Personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department were dispatched at approximately 4:30 a.m. to a report of a ringing fire alarm system on the 900 block of Embarcadero Del Mar, fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

They found a fire-suppression sprinkler head had been activated and put out the blaze, Safechuck added.

Firefighters assisted with removal of water from the business, which had minor damage, he said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, Safechuck said.

Richmond, CA – Sprinkler system activated for arson fire at Target store; No injuries reported

The automatic sprinkler system at the Richmond Target store helped keep an arson fire in the store “small and nearly extinguished,” according to Richmond Firefighters Local 188.

The firefighters’ union shared video and photos from the fire response that occurred Thursday at the store in the 4500 block of Macdonald Avenue.

Luckily, no one was injured. While the fire damage was limited to a small portion of the aisle, the remainder of the store suffered extensive water damage from the sprinkler system, fire officials said. The store has been closed since the incident.

“Crews arrived at scene to find the occupants and employees already safely out front,” fire officials said.

Fire crews found smoke in the store coming from a fire in one of the aisles. They doused whatever fire remained after the sprinkler system activated.

According to Richmond police, firefighters deemed that the fire was intentionally set. No suspects were located at the scene and the case was referred to fire investigators for followup, police said.

The  El Cerrito and Contra Costa County fire departments also assisted with the incident.

San Jose, CA – Sprinkler system activated for fire at Trader Joe’s; No injuries reported

Firefighters on Monday night quickly extinguished a fire at the Trader Joe’s south of the San Jose International Airport.

The fire was reported just before 6:15 p.m. at the store at 635 Coleman Ave., said San Jose fire Capt. Mitch Matlow.

“The management in the store heard the fire alarms go off, and then they started seeing water coming down from the ceiling in the area over their fresh meat section,” said Matlow, adding that the water was from the store’s fire sprinkler system.

Firefighters arrived to see flames on the roof of the store, which was also being evacuated. About 19 employees and 60 customers were in the store at the time of the fire.

“Everybody is accounted for,” Matlow said. “There are no injuries.”

Employees described the evacuation as “pretty orderly” and said customers were still trying to check out while being asked to evacuate.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, Matlow said.

Matlow said the fire started on the roof. The cause, however, remains under investigation.

As of 8 p.m., employees were still waiting to be let back into the store to collect their belongings. They said work had taken place Monday on the roof where the fire ignited.

The fire left a hole in the roof, Matlow said. An estimate of the damage was not immediately available, but Matlow said he expected the store to remain closed for at least a couple of days.

Firefighters were working with the management to preserve perishable goods in the store, Matlow said.

Fresno, CA – Sprinkler system activated for possible arson fire

A fire Monday morning at a city-owned building in downtown Fresno that’s more than 120 years old may have been arson, according to a Fresno Fire Department battalion chief.

Crews were called at about 8:30 a.m. to the Greyhound bus station on Tulare Street and Santa Fe Avenue where flames from outside the building set off fire sprinklers, Battalion Chief Devin McGuire said.

Crews found two windows had been broken from the outside where the fire originated, McGuire said, and witnesses pointed out a man in the area who may have started the fire.

Firefighters worked to replace a damaged sprinkler, pushed pooled water out of the building and investigate the potential arson, he said.

Greyhound was not open at the time of the fire, according to fire crews.

The bus company rents the northern most space of the Spanish mission-style structure that also houses the Amtrak station in downtown. The city owns the building, McGuire said.

“It’s definitely a suspicious fire any time you do have a fire that starts on the exterior of the building,” he said.

The damage is not expected to affect daily business for the depot, he said.

The historic Santa Fe Railroad Depot building was completed in 1899.

Redlands, CA – Sprinkler system activated for fire at student living residence; No injuries reported

Wednesday evening, a student living in Grossmont Hall reported a fire in their first-floor residence. Public Safety was first on scene, followed by the Redlands Fire and Police departments and the fire was quickly contained and extinguished. There were no injuries and damage was contained to four rooms, three of which sustained minor water damage from the automatic fire sprinkler system. The facilities team is now completing an inspection of the building and will coordinate cleanup efforts.

The university’s fire alarm and sprinkler systems both functioned properly and aided in a quick evacuation of the residence hall and the extinguishing of the fire. At this time, we are working with the student and Redlands fire authorities to determine the cause of the fire.

For their comfort, residents living in Grossmont Hall will be temporarily relocated while cleanup is conducted.
