Apartment Building, Residential Springfield, MO – Fire at off-campus apartment building suppressed by sprinkler system January 27, 2019 viking210 A fire started in the living room of an apartment last Thursday morning. The building is located in the 900 block of south Roanoke Avenue, west of the Missouri State University campus. A battalion chief says the sprinkler system quickly extinguished the fire. Smoke detectors woke up the people inside the first floor unit, they escaped through the bedroom windows. No one was hurt. No one else was evacuated from the apartment building which is new according to the fire department. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
College/University (on campus), School / University Knoxville, TN – Fire in on campus lab and classroom building is limited by sprinkler system January 26, 2019 viking210 A small fire in Strong Hall last Saturday morning has resulted in some water damage on the second through fifth floors. The building and all of its labs are open today. The fire was sparked by electronic equipment on a workbench in Room 525G. Fire damage was minimal and limited to that room. Most of the water damage is limited to the north end of the fifth floor and the areas below. The damage from the fire itself was minimal due to the proper operation of the fire sprinkler system.
Hotel / Restaurant, Restaurant South Lake Tahoe, CA – Kitchen fire kept in check by sprinkler system until fire crews arrived January 25, 2019 viking210 Hunan Garden on Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe is closed after a fire broke out in the kitchen’s grease shoot, spreading to the stove and exhaust vent. At 11:09 p.m. on January 18, crews from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue arrived at the restaurant and saw flames shooting out of the vents on the roof. Not knowing the extent of the fire they called in Lake Valley Fire and Tahoe Douglas Fire to assist. The hood system worked and kept the fire in check until the crews could extinguish the fire. On Saturday morning, the building and health departments were on the scene with Battalion Chief Karl Koeppen to evaluate the damage. The restaurant will be closed until the stove and sprinkler system are back in service, clean-up of the fire aftermath is completed and the building can be re-inspected.
Primary / Secondary School, School / University Harrisburg, PA – Sprinkler system contained fire to school bathroom; No injuries reported January 25, 2019 viking210 The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire responded to a small, contained fire Tuesday morning, in a second floor boys bathroom at Rowland Academy. According to school district officials, students and staff were quickly evacuated to Scott Elementary School. The Bureau of Fire said the school’s sprinkler system helped contain the fire. All staff and students were kept safe, and there is no further damage to the school. Classes have resumed for the day.
Other Business Washington, D.C. – Electrical fire at TV studio contained by sprinkler system January 23, 2019 viking210 Several television studios were evacuated Sunday morning when a fire broke out just after 7 a.m. on the eighth floor of a building off of North Capitol Street in D.C. The building houses several television networks and their studios – including Fox News, C-SPAN, and MSNBC. Firefighters had to break out multiple windows to ventilate the smoke. No one was inside the studio when the fire began – and no one was injured. Investigators say everyone was able to make it out the building safely thanks to the fire alarm. Fire officials say they found an electrical panel on fire in a studio and were able to extinguish it with the help of the building’s sprinkler system. “We found an electrical panel on fire in a studio facility on the eighth floor. We were able to extinguish that fire, the sprinklers had activated,” said Vito Maggiolo with D.C. Fire and EMS. “Thank God for sprinklers, they are very effective devices. They contained the fire. Our firefighters finished it off with final attack,” he said.
Food Processing, Manufacturing Burlington, IA – Oven fire in food processing facility controlled by sprinkler system January 22, 2019 viking210 The Burlington Fire Department responded to an oven fire at Shearer’s Foods at 11:38 p.m. Thursday. Fire Marshal Mark Crooks said firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from the building and found cracker dough burning on a conveyor inside one of the large commercial ovens. According to a press release, the fire was caused by “a malfunction of the conveyor system.” A sprinkler had already activated above the oven, and firefighters and employees worked together to put out the rest of the fire. Employees were evacuated during the fire, and no one was injured. The building was not damaged. Firefighters stayed on scene until a little after 2 a.m.

A small fire in the laundry room of the Franklin County Corrections Center on Jackson Pike resulted in a deputy being taken to Ohio Health Grant Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation.Marc Gofstein, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said an industrial dryer in the facility’s laundry room caught fire around 7:30 a.m. Friday. The jail, which houses nearly 1,700 inmates, went into an immediate lockdown and a fire suppression sprinkler system kicked on in the laundry area. No inmates were in the area or were injured in the incident, Gofstein said.Columbus fire crews also responded to the jail and assisted deputies in putting out the small blaze. All deputies in the area were examined by medics and one deputy was taken to Grant for treatment, Gofstein said. That deputy, who is not being named, is in stable condition. The jail remains on lockdown Friday afternoon. Gofstein said there is no visitation permitted and no transportation of inmates from Downtown to the Jackson Pike jail as cleanup continues.
Department Store, Retail Lumberton, NC – Suspicious fire at department store contained by sprinkler system; Fire crews finish extinguishing blaze January 16, 2019 viking210 Police in Lumberton are investigating a fire at a department store they say has been deemed suspicious. The fire broke out at the Rose’s department store on East 24th Street around 9:55 a.m. Monday. Lumberton police and Lumberton fire were called the scene. The sprinkler system activated one head, and the fire department was able to extinguish the remaining fire. Lumberton police Capt. Terry Parker says the fire is being investigated as suspicious. Town of Batavia fire dispatched and a chief on scene reported smoke but said that the sprinkler system appears to have put the fire out. The building was evacuated.

The explosion went off at 25 Ames St. around 10:30 a.m., prompting the sprinklers to turn on, according to the Cambridge Fire Department. No injuries have been reported. Officials say the situation is stable. No additional information was immediately available.
