La Crosee, WI – Sprinkler system extinguishes fire at ACE Hardware; No injuries reported

The cause of a fire at the ACE Hardware Distribution Center on French Island is under investigation.

The La Crosse Fire Department was called to the center at 500 Fanta Reed Place shortly before 2 p.m.

Light smoke was showing when crews arrived. Given the size of the building, a total of eight trucks with crews were eventually called to the scene.

According to Captain Lance Tryggestad, three crews went inside to find the location of the fire. No employees were on the scene when the fire occurred.

The fire was tracked down in the warehouse. It was being actively suppressed by a fire sprinkler system. Fire crews were able to get control of the fire and ultimately extinguish it and turn off the sprinkler system.

No injuries were reported.

Niagara Falls, NY – Fire sprinkler helped suppress fire on 15th floor of high rise apartment building

A driver for the Meals on Wheels program helped avert a potential tragedy in an apartment building in the 900 block of Cedar Avenue late Friday morning.

Falls firefighters said the driver was making a lunchtime delivery on the 15th floor of the Niagara Towers apartment building when he discovered a fire there.

“He saw smoke coming out of an apartment and a person on the ground,” Falls Fire Chief Joe Pedulla sad.

Pedulla said crews from the 10th Street Fire Station, just around the corner from the apartment building, were returning to their hall at the time the fire call came in.

“It’s ironic but they had spent the morning at the fire training tower working on high-rise structure fires,” the fire chief said. “It’s mot something we train for extensively, but the timing was good today.”

As firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the Meals on Wheels driver and the occupant of the 15th floor apartment outside the building on the front lawn. Both were suffering form smoke inhalation. “(Firefighters) saw smoke coming out of the 15th floor, and the driver had helped the resident downstairs,” Pedula said. “We feared that they might be more people on the 15th floor with smoke inhalation.”

But when firefighters arrived on the 15th floor they found no additional victims.

The driver and the occupant of the apartment were hospitalized for treatment.

Pedulla said firefighters attached a hose to a 14th floor standpipe and then battled the fire in the apartment. A sprinkler system in the building helped suppress the fire and kept it from spreading.

The chief said the fire damage was “extensive” but limited to the apartment where the blaze began. He said other floors in the building suffered water damage from the sprinkler system.

The cause of the fire was listed as electrical, stemming from an air conditioner being powered off of an extension cord.

Ocean City, MD – Two separate fires within a week extinguished by sprinkler system, one at a restaurant, the other an apartment

The Ocean City Fire Department responded to two separate fires in a downtown restaurant and apartment building over the course of the last week.

The first fire happened late last week in the early morning hours of June 5th, at Flavors of Italy Bistro, located at 513 Atlantic Avenue. Ocean City firefighters forced entry into the building, discovering that the fire sprinkler had activated in the kitchen area and extinguished the fire. Damage was contained to the appliance and adjacent kitchen hood.

The second fire happened just before 3 p.m. on June 8th, at the Trimper’s Apartments in the 700 block of the Ocean City Boardwalk. Firefighters arrived on scene and found smoke on the second floor of the apartment, but on entry they discovered that an activated fire sprinkler had extinguished the fire. Damage was contained to a small area above the stove.

As a result of the quick response of the fire sprinklers and the fire department, the restaurant and apartment building did not sustain serious damage. Both fires have been ruled accidental.

Orleans, MA – Sprinkler system douses stove fire at condo

A sprinkler system doused a stove fire in a multi unit condo complex in Orleans Wednesday afternoon. The fire started on the second floor of the three story structure at 18 West Road around 2 PM. Firefighters had to ventilate smoke and mop up water. One occupant was evaluated by EMTs. The Red Cross was providing temporary shelter for three occupants displaced by the fire and water damage. Further details were not immediately available.

Cedar City, UT – Fire sprinkler contains fire at plastics manufacturer

Firefighters from multiple agencies responded Saturday afternoon to a fire at a plastics manufacturing plant in Cedar City.

Genpak, at 2791 Highway 56, produces styrofoam plates for use in restaurants.

Crews were called at 1:43 p.m. after the fire was discovered in the plant’s 20,000-square-foot storage building, which holds “huge rolls of plastic, floor to ceiling,” Cedar City Fire Chief Mike Phillips told Gephardt Daily.

Employees evacuated through the front door of the building and, after a few moments of not being certain that everyone had made it out safely, the facility’s manager informed fire crews that everyone was accounted for.

“That was a relief and made our job easier,” Phillips said.

The major concern was that the area where the fire occurred contains highly flammable materials.

“If we had opened the door to the storage area, the additional oxygen would have caused the fire to spread through the whole structure,” Phillips said. “So we waited to get aerials (trucks) and pressurized the sprinkler system. The sprinkler system did its job.”

Greenville, DE – Fire caused by Electrical malfunction put out by fire sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Blazes damage Greenville building on Kennett Pike Wednesday afternoon.

Talleyville Fire Company responded to the scene around 12:30 p.m. at Greenville Center on Kennett Pike. They found smoke coming from the two-story, commercial building, Delaware’s Office of State Fire Marshal said.

Fire marshals say the fire was then extinguished by the building’s fire sprinkler system preventing the spread of the flames.

The fire was accidental and originated inside the ceiling of a second-floor office and was caused by an electrical malfunction of fixed electrical wiring, fire marshals said.

No injuries were reported and the fire caused $10,000 in damages, according to fire marshals.

Halifax, NS, Canada – Sprinkler system helps put out cooking fire at apartment complex; No injuries reported

Over a dozen apartment tenants have been displaced after a small fire caused major inconvenience in St. John’s, N.L., on Saturday afternoon.

Officials say the trouble began when heat from a cooking fire triggered the sprinkler system in one section of the Meadowland Manor apartment complex on Bay Bulls Road.

The building’s owner, Killam Properties, says it could take two days to repair water damage and ensure the building is safe before evacuated tenants can return.

Meanwhile, Canadian Red Cross volunteers have arranged emergency lodging for tenants from 13 apartments. Additionally, Killam Properties says it may temporarily relocate some tenants to vacant apartments in unaffected sections of the building.

The fire was extinguished quickly – no injuries were reported.

Portland, ME – Fire at Jewish Museum put out by fire sprinklers

Firefighters are investigating a fire at the Maine Jewish Museum in Portland.

It happened late Thursday afternoon.

Crews found smoke throughout the building.

Firefighters say the sprinkler system put the fire out, but there is a lot of water damage.

Crews say fire erupted behind the chapel area of the second floor, but exactly where it started and how is still under investigation.

Philadelphia, PA – Hospital fire extinguished by fire sprinklers after man barricaded himself in room and set fire to bed sheets; No injuries reported

The emergency room at a Kensington hospital was closed Saturday after a man set a fire inside one of the rooms, police said.

A man at Temple University Hospital’s Episcopal Campus barricaded himself in a room in the emergency department and set fire to bed sheets, but no one was injured.

Police said hospital security searched the 30- to 40-year-old man at about 2:40 p.m. Saturday and placed him in a room. The man was there to receive drug treatment. Police said he barricaded himself inside and turned on oxygen tanks, then lit the bed sheets on fire.

Police said a maintenance man broke a window and the man climbed out and fought with security, but police arrived and arrested him. The emergency room was evacuated with no injuries. The blaze was extinguished and the fire marshal declared it an arson.

A spokeswoman for Temple Health said the building’s sprinkler system extinguished the fire. Patients in the ER were transported to Temple University Hospital’s Main Campus, she added. The hospital will continue sending ER patients there until the Episcopal ER can reopen.

Police said the emergency room will remain closed until repairs are completed.

McKinney, TX – Fire sprinklers keep fire from spreading at second floor apartment

The McKinney Fire Department (MFD) responded to a reported water flow alarm at the Magnolia Ranch apartments located at 3191 Medical Center Dr., at 1 p.m. on May 17. Units arrived to find smoke alarms going off and water running off the balcony of one of the second floor apartments. Fire sprinklers kept the flames from spreading and firefighters were able to shut the fire sprinkler system down.
