Sprinkler activates in fire at adult group home (East Providence, RI)

A fire forced the evacuation of an adult group home Thursday night.

The fire at 803 Willett Avenue began shortly before 8 p.m. in a second-floor closet, setting off the sprinkler system, the city’s fire marshal, Capt. Kenneth P. Botelho, said. Thirteen occupants – 11 residents and two staffers – had safely evacuated the building by the time firefighters arrived, he said.

The occupants were relocated to another group home in Warren. The building is temporarily uninhabitable due to water damage from the sprinkler, Botelho said, but there was no structural damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said.

Single sprinkler head prevents spread of restaurant fire (Boiling Springs, SC)

An early-morning fire at an Upstate restaurant sent three Spartanburg County fire departments to the scene on Wednesday. The fire was reported about 3 a.m. at the Copper River Grill, located at 2104 S Carolina 9 in Boiling Springs, dispatchers said.

Boiling Springs, Cherokee Springs  and North Spartanburg fire departments responded, according to Boiling Springs Fire Chief Scott Miller. Firefighters were able to contained flames to an outside storage area, Miller said.

 “A single sprinkler head activated, preventing the fire from spreading into the restaurant,” Miller said in an informal release.

Automatic sprinkler contains fire at Mercury Marine plant (Fond du Lac, WI)

No one was hurt and damage was minor in a fire at Mercury Marine Monday afternoon. The Fond du Lac Fire Department responded to the call at 2:36 p.m. Upon arrival, crews learned the fire started in Plant 98 in a dust collector. The automatic fire sprinkler activated and contained and extinguished the fire. “The fire suppression system worked as designed and kept the fire contained to the dust collector” said, Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O’Leary.

Sprinkler system contains fire in multi-purpose commercial building (Falmouth, ME)

Falmouth firefighters put out a fire in a commercial building that the town’s fire chief said could have caused more damage Sunday afternoon if not for the building’s sprinkler system, which helped suppress the flames.  Fire Chief Howard Rice Jr. said a fire alarm sounded at 12:29 p.m. in the multi-use commercial building at 196 Route 1.

Rice said the fire started in an electrical room in the Morong Falmouth Service Center, a car dealership at the front of the commercial structure. Rice said the fire burned materials that were stored in the room. He said the sprinkler system helped contain the fire to the electrical room.

Fire at automotive components manufacturer contained by sprinklers (Greencastle, IN)

Local fire crews were called to the scene of a fire Friday evening at Heartland Automotive. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene to reports of heavy smoke at 9:36 p.m.  Greencastle Fire Chief Bill Newgent told the Banner Graphic the blaze originated in the facility’s paint room. The sprinkler system in the area contained the fire until firefighters arrived to extinguish it completely. No cause has been determined.

Nursing home fire controlled with help from sprinkler system (Champaign, IL)

No one was hurt when a dryer caught fire at a west Champaign nursing home Thursday night. Champaign firefighters were called to Helia Healthcare of Champaign at 8:43 p.m. Thursday. Champaign Fire Marshal John Koller said fire was found in a dryer and quickly put out. The building’s sprinkler sysem activated as well.  Residents were able to stay in the building, he said.

Sprinklers control fire at drug treatment facility until firefighters arrive (Yakima, WA)

A man suspected of setting a fire in the bathroom of a drug treatment facility has been arrested, according to Yakima police. The man, who was not identified, was arrested Friday morning in connection with the Oct. 28 fire at Connections Treatment Center. Police say a fire set in the bathroom of an apartment unit on the first floor was contained by an automatic sprinkler system until fire crews could arrive and extinguish it. Damage was described as minimal and the facility’s more than 40 occupants evacuated without injury.

Sprinklers control fire, limit damage in fire at multi-use complex (Pawtucket, RI)

A small fire in a third-floor space of the Hope Artiste Village complex was put out by firefighters Wednesday night. Battalion Chief Joseph Murray said that the fire started on a wood floor that was being renovated, triggering the sprinkler system. Murray said the sprinklers contained the fire to about a 15-foot section of floor. The floor was unoccupied and there were no injuries, said Murray. The complex houses shops, workshop studio apartments and other businesses in a 19th-century mill complex.

Upon arrival of our first fire crew, we found a heavy smoke condition, and the fire sprinkler system had been activated.
