Kearney, NE – Sprinkler system activated for fire at manufacturing facility

Fire crews responded to a fire at Eaton in Kearney Wednesday evening.

According to the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD), they found heavy black smoke when they arrived at Eaton Corporation at 4200 East Highway 30. The smoke was coming from the roof and exterior doors of the west side of facility. Employees were evacuating when fire crews arrived.

One crew found the fire and extinguished it while another gained access to the roof to ensure the fire had not extended to the roof.

Fire command verified with Eaton’s management that all employees were accounted for and had been evacuated.

Power was shut down in the impacted area along with the sprinkler system which was activated by the fire.

Two Eaton’s employees were evaluated by Good Samaritan EMS for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.

The fire origin and cause are still under investigation, but the original investigation showed that the fire started in a seat grinder and spread to a mist collector. The fire was mostly contained to the area of these two machines, according to KVFD.

Maryville, TN – Sprinkler system extinguishes fire at restaurant

An electrical fire broke out in the kitchen of Two Doors Down, 118 E. Broadway Ave., Maryville, Monday, May 22, but had been extinguished by the time firefighters from Maryville and Alcoa arrived.

Mike Caylor, deputy chief of Maryville Fire Department, said that a call regarding the fire came in at 1:33 p.m. Monday. Firefighters arrived 3 minutes later, to find that the fire was out. The sprinkler system extinguished it, he said.

“The updated sprinkler system did its job and assisted in keeping damages to a very small minimum. No damage to the main level at all. We just have to clean up some water in other areas and double check for any other old neglected electrical components to ensure this never happens again,” a post published to Two Doors Down’s Facebook page states.

Five engines and two support vehicles responded to the fire, along with 12 personnel from MFD and three from Alcoa Fire Department.

Firefighters remained at the scene to assist with water removal and smoke mitigation.

Santa Rosa, CA – Sprinkler system activated for fire in 14-story apartment building

An elderly woman and a small dog were rescued from a fire that broke out in a Santa Rosa high-rise apartment complex on Sunday morning, announced the Santa Rosa Fire Department.

The fire department first received reports of a fire via a water flow alarm in a 14-story apartment building on 801 Tupper St shortly after 4 a.m.

Firefighters responded to apartment 303 in the building and found that a sprinkler system activated and extinguished a fire from the kitchen. Firefighters found a woman on the ground of the living room floor and brought her to the first floor lobby. A small dog was also found in the apartment.

The woman was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Fire officials deemed the apartment uninhabitable because of severe water and fire damage. Water damage also affected seven other apartments in the building, said firefighters.

Bismarck, ND – Sprinkler system activated for vehicle fire at truck shop; No injuries reported

The warehouse of a major Bismarck construction company was damaged in the early morning hours on Thursday.

Bismarck Fire officials say a truck in the shop of Northwest Contracting caught fire, triggering the building’s sprinkler system. Investigators say the system kept the fire under control by the time fire crews arrived around 3 a.m.

Firefighters found heavy smoke and heavy fire and smoke damage to the truck and ceiling in the shop on the 2800 block of Valley Forge Street.

No one was injured. Investigators believe the vehicle fire was accidental.

Alton, IL – Sprinkler system activated for fire in hotel room; No injuries reported

Firefighters were called to the Best Western Premier hotel at 3559 College Ave. in Alton at 9:18 p.m. Friday for a one-room fire.

According to authorities, a fire in the couch of an unoccupied room set off the hotel’s sprinkler system, which extinguished the blaze before firefighters arrived. The hotel immediately evacuated more than 100 people including those who had gathered for a function in a meeting room and a 10-year-old’s birthday pool party.

Tired guests wanting to sleep stood and sat outside of the hotel on all four sides. Firefighters scrambled to shut off the sprinkler system as water poured out of the room and into the first floor hallway.

The room was reported to have been heavily damaged. Fire department officials on Friday night said they had not determined how the fire started in the unoccupied room.

Firefighters made sure the fire was completely out before guests were allowed back in the hotel at 10:01 p.m.

The night wasn’t a complete disappointment, as firefighters let the birthday girl and her guests sit in a fire truck before they left.

The cause of the fire is under investigation; no injuries were reported.

High Point, NC – Sprinkler system activated for fire at factory; No injuries reported

A fire damaged part of the Akzo Nobel factory in the southern part of the city Tuesday morning and forced a temporary evacuation of the complex, which produces specialized paints and coatings.

The fire started around 6:30 a.m. at the factory in the 1400 block of Progress Avenue.

Employees in the building where the fire was immediately evacuated, and the building remains shut down until further notice, Akzo Nobel said in a statement to The High Point Enterprise.

Firefighters saw flames coming from part of one building when they arrived, Deputy Fire Chief Brian Evans of the High Point Fire Department said. The fire started in a vat in a production area. A sprinkler system activated and kept the fire from spreading further, he said.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in eight minutes, and no one was injured.

Three buildings were initially evacuated while firefighters brought the blaze under control, Evans said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation but it is being ruled an accident, he said.

A dollar estimate of the damage wasn’t available Tuesday.

Fifteen units and 33 firefighters went to the fire scene.

Des Peres, MO – Sprinkler system contains laundry room fire at nursing facility; No injuries reported

Firefighters responded to an overnight fire at a nursing home in Des Peres.

The call came in around 1:35 a.m. for a fire at a nursing facility at the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility at 13460 Manchester Road. Firefighters say the fire was in the laundry room. Alarms notified the staff, and the sprinkler system kept the fire contained until crews arrived.

No injuries were reported and an evacuation was not necessary as the fire was contained to the laundry room.

Phoenix, AZ – Sprinkler system activated for electric vehicle fire in warehouse

An autonomous electric vehicle caught fire at a Waymo warehouse in south Phoenix on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

All employees had safely evacuated the building by the time firefighters responded to the scene near Buckeye Road and Third Street around 8:30 a.m., the Phoenix Fire Department said.

Capt. Todd Keller told KTAR News 92.3 FM the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

“I can tell you that the sprinkler system did a fabulous job preventing the fire from extending to the building, which allowed our firefighters to go in and assist with the extinguishment of the fire,” Keller said.

“Because these battery’s cells store a high amount of energy in such a small amount of space … once one of these cells goes, it’s extremely difficult to put out.”

After the fire was extinguished, the vehicle was put in a Phoenix Streets Department environmental dumpster to be taken for proper recycling.

Keller said the Waymo facility is used to service the company’s self-driving vehicles.

“They bring the electric vehicles to the Waymo warehouse and equip them. They download the software, they get all the cameras ready and get them ready for the road,” he said.

Ottawa, ON, Canada – Sprinkler system extinguishes fire at commercial business; No injuries reported

It was a busy morning for Ottawa firefighters.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) responded to two commercials fires within a one hour time period Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were first called to a commercial structure in the 3000 block of Strandherd Drive shortly before 1:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters were met by staff reporting an odour in the building, but nothing visible.

Firefighters located a door with smoke coming out around the back of the building and could hear several alarms going off.

A working fire was declared, though further investigation revealed the fire had been extinguished by the building sprinkler system.

The fire was under control by 2:25 a.m. and there were no injuries reported.

Yarmouth, ME – Sprinkler system activated for fire at marketplace; No injuries reported

A fire at a Route 1 mall in Yarmouth on Monday night was contained before it could spread to a dozen or so adjoining businesses.

Yarmouth Fire Chief Mike Robitaille credited the sprinkler system at the Sherwin Williams paint store, 438 Route 1, for preventing a much larger fire that he said could have caused significant damage to other businesses at Yarmouth Marketplace.

Robitaille said the fire started just after 6 p.m. in a ceiling dormer above Sherwin Williams. It did not reach any of the paint products stored at the business, but the store sustained significant water damage.

“The fire was quickly contained, but in all honesty, it was the sprinkler system that did the job,” Robitaille said. “If the fire had spread, it could have been a significant dollar loss.”

Some of the adjoining addresses in the mall, which include Romeo’s Pizza, Enterprise Rent a Car, an AT&T store, P&P Screen Printing and Royal River Baptist Church, sustained smoke damage.

Mutual aid was provided by Cumberland, Freeport and Falmouth. No injuries were reported and the cause remains under investigation.
