Vicksburg, MS – Sprinkler system keeps apartment kitchen fire from spreading; No injuries

Food burning on a stove was the cause of a fire early Friday afternoon that heavily damaged the kitchen of a third floor apartment at Carmel Manor, 910 Bowman St., Vicksburg Fire Chief Charles Atkins said. He said firefighters were called about 1:09 p.m. He said a sprinkler system in the apartment managed to keep the fire from spreading and contained it to the kitchen area. He said the apartment, an adjacent apartment and a second floor apartment had water damage. No one was injured.

Corinth, MS – Sprinkler system helps contain fire to dust collector at Kimberly-Clark facility

All four units of the Corinth Fire Department responded to a fire just after midnight Friday at the Kimberly-Clark Professional facility. Corinth Fire Chief Lucky Briggs said the water sprinkler system engaged and firefighters had the blaze under control shortly after arrival.

The fire was described by Briggs as being contained in a dust collector. There was no structural damage to the facility, but significant water damage. “Firemen had it out fairly quickly,” noted the fire chief.

There were no injuries. The fire remains under investigation, noted Briggs. Kimberly-Clark spokesperson Bob Brand said the cleanup operation was underway Saturday and there would be an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

“We are glad no one was hurt,” said Brand. “We will get to the root of the problem and get it fixed.” Brand praised employees for their orderly response to the fire and firefighters for their quick response.

The fire call came in at 12:16 a.m. Saturday and firemen remained on the scene until 2:23 a.m. Assisting Corinth on the scene was one engine and five firefighters from the Farmington Volunteer Fire Department.

KC-Professional is adjacent to the K-C Global Nonwovens Division facility. KC-Professional takes raw material from the nonwovens mill and turns it into finished products ready for consumers.

Biloxi, MS – Fire at assisted living facility held in check by sprinkler system; No injuries

The grounds surrounding the Pillars were filled with emergency vehicles and crews throughout the morning on Wednesday, after flames forced residents and staff at the Pillars Medical Residences in Biloxi to evacuate.

Fire Chief, Joe Boney says the fire wasn’t as involved as others he’s seen, but it was still a dangerous situation. “Anytime you have a fire like this, it doesn’t take a lot of fire. The smoke is what gets people. Especially when you have many residents in a close area like this,” said Boney.

Chief Boney says the sprinkler system also did its job. “It did stop the fire. It held the fire until we could get to it to put it out,” said Boney.

According to Boney, only one staff member had to be treated for smoke inhalation, and no residents were injured. The staff at the facility had already started the evacuations when the fire department arrived.

“They did exactly what they were supposed to do, they made sure their residents were safe,” said Rhonda Nettles, administrator of a sister facility to the Pillars.

According to Nettles, the staff members practice several fire drills a month to make sure they are prepared for any incident. Since the fire was contained to one room, the residents were simply moved to a safer area of the building.

In addition to the building’s safety features, all agencies involved were on top of their game. AMR operations manager, Gregory Doyle, says that teamwork is a product of proper training.

“When you train all the time together. Go to the same meetings, go to the same planning sessions, it helps out a lot,” said Doyle. Although one wing of the facility had a bit of water damage, officials hoped to have the residents back to their rooms by the end of the day.

Meridian, MS – Fire at Salvation Army store extinguished by sprinkler system

The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Meridian suffered an overnight fire. “It seems it has wiped out our entire contents, either with water damage or the smoke damage,” said Salvation Army commander, Maj. Glenn Riggs. “So, we’re in a real difficult situation because we have to close and reset.”

Riggs says the building suffered minor damage and the fire was luckily put out by the sprinkler system. Riggs says it hasn’t been confirmed, but it appears the fire was electrical and started around the cashier’s pod. Cleanup and clearing are the first tasks to be completed. After that, Riggs says The Salvation Army will need the public’s help.

“We can’t open with an empty store,” said Riggs. “We do sell the items and the reason we sell them is, we sell them to those who can afford them, so we are able to give items to those who cannot.” Riggs says he is asking that the community be patient for the moment as the organization works to recover from the tragedy. He said he hopes when the store opens again, the community will be generous with donations.

The Salvation Army Thrift Store will be closed until further notice and no donations can be accepted at this time. However, the donations of sellable items will be welcomed in a few weeks.

Ridgeland, MS – Sprinklers activate in hotel grease fire; Guests safely evacuated

Some 70 people were forced from an Extended Stay Hotel on Ridgewood Road Monday night when fire broke out.

Assistant Ridgeland Fire Chief Allen McCluer told WLBT-TV that a grease fire activated the sprinkler system.

McCluer described charring on the wall, a little fire damage and about 3 inches of water in the room where the fire started.

Much of the water also drained from the second floor down to the first floor, WLBT reported.

Crews will be working throughout the night to check electrical systems, the sprinkler system and to clean up the water and fire damage.

Evacuees are being put up at other area hotels.

Meridian, MS – Sprinkler system helps save Outback Steakhouse

An automatic sprinkler system apparently did enough to help save Meridian from losing its Outback Steakhouse.  Meridian Fire Chief Anthony Clayton said Tuesday that the sprinkler system did its job well enough to aid the arrival of the Meridian Fire Department, which extinguished the Monday afternoon fire at the steakhouse located at the Meridian Crossroads.

“Had it not been for the automatic sprinkler system, the building would have burned up,” Clayton said.  Clayton said his investigative team concluded the fire was caused by corrosion in its gas line.

“It had been caused from the cleaning solvents used,” he said. “The solvents had corroded the line and it failed. It ignited. Because the automatic sprinkler system activated, it kept the damage to a minimum. It allowed us time to get there and put it out.”

Clayton said the restaurant suffered smoke damage and could be reopened in a couple of days.

Fire at Mississippi State University dormitory contained by sprinkler system (Starkville, MS)

Mississippi State University officials say repairs are beginning immediately on a women’s dormitory that was damaged by a Sunday night fire that appears to have been started by a candle burning in one of the rooms. The university said nobody was injured, but more than 150 students stayed elsewhere Sunday night after a fire began around 8 p.m. in one wing of Oak Hall, which opened in 2012. Local fire officials said the fire on the third story of the four-story building appears to have been caused by a candle burning in one of the rooms, and it was contained by sprinklers.
