Ashland, OH – Sprinkler system keeps warehouse fire in check

A fire caused unknown damage to the warehouse of Gifts4You Wholesale Inc., at 1201 Jacobson Ave., Tuesday morning.

Ashland Fire Department Assistant Chief Gabe Campbell said an electrical system showered sparks onto some pallets in the northeast corner of the building.

He said the occupants had left and returned to find smoke coming from the building.

Firefighters knocked the hot spots of the fire down;  the sprinkler system had kept the fire in check and did what it was supposed to do, Campbell said.

Campbell did not have an estimate of damage to the building or contents.

Annapolis, MD – No injuries in fire at Extended Stay America hotel controlled by sprinkler system

A fire in an Annapolis hotel room last Tuesday resulted in damage to nearly a dozen rooms, a county fire department spokesman said. Firefighters were dispatched at 6:50 p.m. to the Extended Stay America hotel in the 100 block of Admiral Cochrane Drive.

The hotel’s sprinkler system primarily controlled the fire, a fire spokesman said. It took about 13 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Nine rooms in the hotel sustained smoke and water damage.  Nobody was injured, the spokesman said.

The fire caused an estimated $2,500 worth of damage, said county fire department spokesman Capt. Russ Davies. The fire was ruled accidental.

Abingdon, MD – Sprinkler contains townhouse fire to room of origin

A smoke alarm and sprinkler system helped contain fire in Abingdon last Monday morning, authorities said. An extension cord accidentally sparked a fire Monday morning in Abingdon that displaced four people, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.  A smoke alarm and sprinkler system helped minimize the damage and allow the man who found the fire to escape safely, authorities said.

Two adults and two children lived in the middle-of-the-group townhouse in the 500 block of June Apple Court, the fire marshal reported; all have been displaced. Home alone Monday morning, the boyfriend of one tenant awoke to the sound of the smoke alarm going off and discovered that there was a fire in the second-floor bedroom at 9:56 a.m., officials said.

A sprinkler contained the blaze to that room, according to the fire marshal. Approximately 20 firefighters responded and brought the fire under control within 10 minutes, officials reported.

Halifax, NS, Canada – Apartment kitchen fire extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

A third-floor apartment kitchen fire during noon hour left a building at 334 Parkland Dr. was extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system. Four apparatuses and 12 firefighters responded to the blaze.  The call came in at 12:54 p.m. last Wednesday, and firefighters were there shortly thereafter, Blackburn said.

“The sprinkler system worked perfectly fine, but the water flow had ramifications on that floor as well as floors below,” Blackburn said. The sprinklers were shut down within about 10 minutes, he said.

“You never want to turn (sprinkler systems) off too early. We wanted to make sure the fire had been extinguished prior to shutting any suppression systems down,” he said. The building was evacuated, but tenants were allowed to go back into apartments that weren’t affected by the fire, he said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The room of origin was the kitchen in Apt. 310, he said.

Pittsburgh, PA – Fire at high-rise luxury condominium building controlled with help from sprinkler system

No one was injured in a 3-alarm fire in a kitchen Friday night at Piatt Place, a high-rise condominium complex Downtown. The fire was reported at 7:30 p.m. at 301 Fifth Ave., the city’s Department of Public Safety said. Crews were working at midnight to ventilate the building and assess damages. The fire was labeled as 3-alarm due to the size of the building, the department said. It started in a kitchen in a residence on the sixth floor; the building’s sprinkler system assisted in containing the fire. The cause was under investigation.

Brantford, ON, Canada – Overnight foundry fire contained with help from sprinkler system

Brantford Fire Department Platoon Chief Herb Van Der Made said at 1:25 a.m. firefighters from station 4 were called to the McLean Foundry at 247 Colborne St. W., where they could see smoke coming from the roof. A 911 call had come in from the foundry’s fire alarm company.   Van Der Made said the fire appears to have started in the older section of the foundry, which was built in the 1930s.  “We were met with a lot of heavy smoke going in, so we had to retreat,” he said.

The firefighters found another way in, through a rear bay door, where they proceeded to extinguish “a really intense” fire over the following two hours.  Holes were punched in the steel roof of the building’s younger section for ventilation, enabling aerial truck 9 to attack the fire from above.

Van Der Made said a sprinkler system helped get the fire under control.  Part of the building’s back roof fell due the fire damage.  No one was working in the foundry overnight, and no one was hurt fighting the fire, according to Van Der Made.  The business owners showed up and helped firefighters to access the building.  Brantford police closed Colborne Street West from Shellard Lane to Lyndsay Street until at least 7 a.m.

The Eugene-Springfield Fire Department said the fire started around 7:40 p.m. at the All Seasons Residential Care Facility on the corner of Madison and W. Broadway. Crews said the fire started in the basement and a sprinkler system kept the flames from spreading. Residents were evacuated to a nearby church but were eventually allowed back into their units.

Fire officials say police arrived first and saw smoke and flames in the kitchen through a window. The sprinkler system held the fire in check while firefighters went in and put it out. No one was hurt.

Crews had to close Penn Avenue for about 15-20 minutes but have since reopened it. Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire.

Iowa City, IA – Sprinkler system helps contain fire at auto parts plant

A structure fire damaged an Iowa City automotive parts plant and temporarily shut down operations Thursday morning, but no one was hurt, officials said.

Iowa City Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Platz said crews were dispatched to the fire at 11:07 a.m. for a report of smoke coming from the east side of the International Automotive Components building at 2500 Highway 6 in Iowa City.

Platz said a fire began in a paint booth in the building and was transmitted through a smokestack to the roof. The fire in the booth itself was contained by the building’s sprinkler system, he said.

“Their system extinguished the fire in the booth itself, but it didn’t cover anything above the booth,” Platz said.

Crews then used water to extinguish the fire on the roof and in the smokestack, making sure that it would not spread, and Platz said firefighters were able to bring the flames under control using very little water.

Thirteen personnel responded to the incident and had the blaze under control within about 40 minutes, according to Platz. And the building’s management was able to evacuate all employees and confirm their safety “very quickly,” he said.

Salt Lake City, UT – Fire at halfway house contained to bedroom by sprinkler system

Twenty-six women residing at the Orange Street Community Correctional Center were relocated Wednesday evening after a fire damaged a section of the center. The fire broke out at approximately 6:30 p.m. in a bedroom at the center. A corrections officer used a handheld extinguisher to put out the fire as staff evacuated residents from the building.

The fire was contained to a single bedroom. The building’s automatic sprinkler system activated and flooded the housing wing.  Salt Lake City Fire Department responded. Investigators declared the fire accidental and say it was caused by a charging electronic device. The officer who extinguished the fire was taken to a local hospital to be checked out as a precautionary measure.

The residents were allowed to gather a bag of belongings and then were taken to the Atherton Community Treatment Center in West Valley City. It is unknown at this time when the center will reopen.
