The fire was reported at 7:30 p.m. at 301 Fifth Ave., the city’s Department of Public Safety said. Crews were working at midnight to ventilate the building and assess damages. The fire was labeled as 3-alarm due to the size of the building, the department said. It started in a kitchen in a residence on the sixth floor; the building’s sprinkler system assisted in containing the fire. The cause was under investigation.
