Spring, TX – Overnight fire at Home Depot contained by sprinkler system

The Spring Fire Department was dispatched to the Home Depot in the 20100 block of Interstate 45, around 5:00 AM, Saturday morning.

When firefighters arrived they found several shelving units of merchandise on fire in the garden center.

HCFMO Investigators say that a fire sprinkler head was activated, containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Corona, CA – Warehouse fire contained with help from sprinkler system

A fire Friday in a Corona warehouse containing aircraft parts damaged the upper half of the structure, but was prevented from spreading thanks to the work of firefighters and the building’s automatic sprinkler system.

The non-injury blaze erupted about 12:30 a.m. in the 1100 block of Olympic Drive, near Rimpau Avenue, according to the Corona Fire Department.

Deputy Chief Chris Cox said that malfunctioning electrical gear sparked the fire in the attic of the warehouse, which was discovered by night shift workers, who attempted to stop the flames with an extinguisher.

According to Cox, Corona and Riverside fire personnel arrived within a few minutes and found the building’s emergency sprinkler system already in operation, suppressing the flames.

The blaze was knocked down in a half-hour, Cox said, estimating the value of contents saved at $3 million.

Grand Forks, ND – Hotel dryer fire extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

A sprinkler system extinguished a fire at a Grand Forks hotel early Sunday morning.

The fire department says around 4:10 a.m., crews responded to the Expressway Inn and Suites on 11th Avenue South on a water flow alarm.

Arriving crews encountered a light haze coming from the lobby area and discovered that there had been a fire in one of the commercial laundry dryers. The automatic sprinkler system had activated and extinguished it before crews arrived.

Guests and staff had exited safely. No one was hurt.

The fire caused about $10,000 in damages.

The cause of the dryer fire is under investigation.

New York, NY – Overnight fire in college residence hall extinguished by sprinkler system; Fire started in trash compactor room

At around 12:30 am last Monday night, or early Tuesday morning, a fire broke out at The Towers at CCNY, forcing all of its residents to evacuate. This event marks the second major incident this year involving the activation of the sprinkler system.

The blaring alarm woke many of the residents, who rushed to evacuate the building. Among them was Resident Assistant William Dadario. After waking up and seeing his fellow RAs post photos of flooding from the sprinklers in their group chat, he knew it was not just a drill.

He said in a brief interview, “Usually, if you get the alarm you don’t always get the [sprinkler] suppression system, just because the suppression system is only triggered when flames actually are licking the sprinkler heads themselves. So I knew it was probably something serious.”

Dadario and other residents reported seeing and smelling smoke coming from the trash chutes on the first floor. The fire appears to have originated in the compactor room, though the cause is still officially unknown.

The sprinkler system was able to extinguish the fire before it could spread, though some areas, including student’s rooms, near the area flooded in the process. Luckily, the sprinklers in the trash rooms are independent of the rest of the system for this very purpose. This specialization meant there was significantly less damage than the incident in October, where sprinkler systems were triggered in several rooms.

Meanwhile, the crowd of residents outside was growing cold and restless. In the rush to evacuate, many were unable to put on clothes appropriate for the freezing weather. Some had nothing more than light pajamas. Others were in flip-flops, lacking socks to protect themselves against the cold.

Public Safety directed everyone to take refuge in the cafés of the research buildings, anticipating a long wait for the fire department and RAs to handle the situation inside. After some time, those residents were falsely told that the doors were open and they could return to their rooms. The crowd then gathered just outside the doors until they were allowed in, nearly an hour after the evacuation began.

Inside the building, the elevators were out of order and residents took the stairs to their rooms in the 10-story dormitory. Eventually, the majority of residents were back in their rooms, and the RA team was helping those who were locked out. The bulk of the crisis was over for the night, while worries linger for those impacted by the flooding.

Wanblee, SD – Fire at school contained by sprinkler system

Classes will resume as normal on Monday morning after a fire was contained by the sprinkler system at at Crazy Horse School in Wanblee.

According to Jon Schiedslaw with the Deputy Director of Oglala Sioux Tribe Emergency Management, just after 3 a.m. on Sunday, multiple agencies were called to Crazy Horse School a report of a fire. When crews arrived, they found a small grease fire in the kitchen which had been put out by the school’s sprinkler system.

Schiedslaw continued to say that the kitchen received light smoke damage, and that crews were able to air out the kitchen and mop up the fire. He said the incident will not effect school on Monday.

The Kadoka Volunteer Fire Department, the Martin Volunteer Fire Department, Oglala Sioux Tribe Emergency Management, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety all responded to the call.

Cherryland, CA – Sprinkler system extinguished fire at assisted living center

One resident of Landmark Villa Senior Residential & Assisted Living center in Cherryland suffered smoke inhalation in a fire early Friday morning. The victim was transported by ambulance to the hospital for treatment.

The Alameda County Fire Department responded to the cooking fire at 4:17 a.m. The building’s sprinkler system doused the flames before firefighters arrived.

Water damage is reported in the room where the fire started and the room below it. The fire started on the third floor.

Cherryland is in unincorporated Hayward.

Meridian, ID – Sprinkler systems assists firefighters in extinguishing kitchen fire at entertainment venue

A kitchen grease fire caused some damage at Big Al’s Meridian Wednesday, but the restaurant and entertainment venue was able to open Thursday. Meridian Fire responded at about 11:30 p.m. Fire Chief Mark Niemeyer said the fire was extinguished within five minutes. There was minimal smoke damage from the fire and a sprinkler activated, he said. Kelly O’Callaghan, Big Al’s general manager, said staff think a piece of equipment might have malfunctioned causing the fire, but they’re not sure. An employee noticed the fire after kitchen staff had cleaned up and gone home. O’Callaghan said Big Al’s is open and serving food from its snack bar. He said they plan to have the main kitchen back up and running by Saturday.

Hawkesbury, ON, Canada – Fire at thermoplastics manufacturing plant contained with help from sprinkler system

There was a minor fire at the Prémoulé thermoplastics plant on Tessier Street in Hawkesbury last Friday evening. According to the Hawkesbury Fire Department, the call arrived at 9:14 p.m. and the fire happened inside the plant. Nobody was working inside at the time and the building’s sprinkler system functioned properly. Firefighters quickly had the situation under control, but the smell of smoke remained outside the plant. The Champlain Fire Department station in L’Orignal was called for assistance as there was some concern at the beginning about having enough firefighters available to respond. Once the fire was under control, Hawkesbury firefighters were going to go into the plant to investigate the cause. According to Plant Director Steve Kennedy, 91 people work at the facility. He said the cost of the fire could not be verified and that on Monday, everything at the plant was back to normal. Prémoulé manufactures countertops and cupboard doors.

Harrisburg, PA – Sprinkler system limits spread of fire in exhaust stack at industrial facility

A Wednesday last night fire at a Harrisburg industrial site damaged a roof and exhaust stack, but no one was injured as a result of the blaze. That is according to Harrisburg Bureau of Fire Chief Brian Enterline, who said firefighters were called about 9:38 p.m. to the 1300 block of North Cameron Street, where a fire was reported at the Dayton Parts building. According to Enterline, the fire began in an industrial machine and spread up through an exhaust stack to the building’s roof.

Firefighters were able to respond within only a few minutes of the call, and they quickly extinguished the flames, Enterline said, explaining that the exhaust stack was destroyed but damage to the roof was only “superficial.”

A sprinkler system also activated and helped to slow the fire as it spread, Enterline said. While fighting the fire, water got into a large tank holding oil typically used to cool hot metal parts at Dayton, Enterline said. The water caused the tanks to overflow and spill oil, he said. However, he added that quick actions by both firefighters and Dayton employees helped to keep the oil from entering the local sewer system or nearby Paxton Creek. “It’s all contained to the building,” Enterline said.

Fishers, IN – Fire in foam pit at gymnastics facility contained by sprinkler system

A fire late last Wednesday caused smoke and water damage to a Fishers gymnastics facility. Firefighters responded to the fire at DeVeau’s School of Gymnastics on Technology Drive around 10 p.m. A fire set off a sprinkler in the building, which contained the flames to a foam pit until firefighters arrived. Preliminary investigation shows the fire may have been started by work that was being done on equipment. The foam blocks in the pit where the fire occurred created thick smoke throughout the building. No one was reported injured in the fire and no athletes were in the building when the fire broke out. Firefighters say the facility will be closed until the owners of the gym can clean up the damage and make repairs.
