Lexington, KY – Sprinkler system activated for fire at cancer center; No injuries reported

Firefighters are investigating the cause of a small fire that set off some of the sprinklers in the UK Markey Cancer Center early Wednesday morning.

A small fire broke out at around 3 a.m. in the Comprehensive Breast Care Center located on the second floor of the Whitney-Hendrickson Building. This building is part of the UK Markey Cancer Center and faces Huguelet Drive.- Advertisement –

As designed, heat from the fire activated sprinklers, which produced water to fight the fire.

Firefighters said they didn’t see any flames or smoke from outside the building but did find two sprinklers had been activated on the second floor because of a small fire.

Firefighters put it out, shut down the sprinkler system and ventilated the building. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Schedulers are contacting patients with appointments Wednesday to reschedule or redirect them.

Ithaca, NY – Sprinkler system kept apartment fire under control until fire crews arrived

The Ithaca Fire Department responded to a call for a fire alarm activation at Titus Towers, an apartment complex on South Plain Street just before 10pm Friday.

Smoke could be seen coming from the building outside but once inside, responders found that the fire was contained to one apartment. The fire was still burning when help arrived, but sprinklers were able to keep it under control.

Firefighters rescued one person  in the apartment as well as a neighboring tenant uninjured.

Responders credit the working smoke detector, fire alarm, and sprinkler system for keeping the fire contained and everyone safe. Following apartment damage the Ithaca Housing Authority is now helping the occupants with clean up and accommodations.

St. Johnsbury, VT – Sprinkler system activated for dryer fire at senior care facility; No injuries reported

Senior residents of the Canterbury Inn Residential Care facility in St. Johnsbury are being housed in a hotel after a fire this weekend.

Fire officials say the fire started Sunday night in the laundry room and was contained to only that room.

After interviews with the building owner, officials say he started a gas fired clothes dryer and 15 minutes later, the fire alarm went off.

Crews are now working on removing residual smoke from the building.

No one was injured during the fire.

Officials say if the building didn’t have functioning fire sprinkler and fire alarms systems, it could have been a different outcome.

According to the facility, residents are staying at the Comfort Inn and will be back as soon as it is deemed safe.

Fort Bend County, TX – (no media coverage) Sprinkler system activated for fire at apartment complex

On 4/21/2021 at approximately 3:49am,
Investigators from the Fort Bend County Fire Marshal’s Office were dispatched to the scene of
an apartment fire with Community Fire Department. Upon arrival, investigators discovered that a
fire had occurred on the patio of a residential living unit. It was determined that the resident
smokes cigarettes in this area, and had done so before going to bed a few hours earlier. The fire
was controlled with one single head activation. There was minor heat damage to the adjacent
area. No other units were affected by this fire.

Fresno, CA – Sprinkler system controlled fire at Amazon fulfillment center until fire crews arrived

Firefighters are investigating after a fire broke out at the Amazon fulfillment center in southwest Fresno on Friday morning.

The fire was reported around 1:45 am. Nearly a dozen fire units responded to the facility on Orange Avenue.

Fire officials say they found flames on the third floor of the fulfillment center. The sprinkler system had turned on and helped to keep the blaze controlled.

Firefighters knocked down the flames and prevented them from spreading further.

Fire crews have not determine what sparked the blaze. Witnesses tell Action News they believe the flames broke out on one of the robotics that carries pods.

They say the water from the sprinkler system flowed down to the two bottom floors.

Firefighters spent several hours throughout the morning removing the water.

Everyone inside the building was safely evacuated, and no injuries have been reported.

Officials were assessing the damage caused by the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Stafford, TX – (no media coverage) Residential kitchen fire extinguished with help from sprinkler system

On 4/20/2021 at approximately 12:56 AM,
Investigators from the Fort Bend County Fire Marshal’s Office were dispatched to the scene of
an apartment fire with Stafford Fire Department. Upon arrival, investigators discovered that a
cooking fire had occurred in the kitchen of a residential living unit due to unattended cooking.
The fire was controlled with the single head activation and there was minor heat damage to the
adjacent area. No other units were affected by this fire.

Richmond, TX – (no media coverage) Apartment fire extinguished with help from sprinkler system

On 4/7/2021 at approximately 12:54 AM,
Investigators from the Fort Bend County Fire Marshal’s Office were dispatched to the scene of
an apartment fire with Richmond Fire Department. Upon arrival, investigators discovered that a
fire had occurred in a clothes dryer in the laundry closet of a residential living unit. The fire was
controlled with the single head activation and there was minor heat damage to the adjacent area.
No other units were affected by this fire.

Harrisonburg, VA – Sprinkler system activated for arson fire at apartment complex

The Harrisonburg Fire Department (HFD) says a Broadway man has been arrested in connection with a recent structure fire that officials believe appears to be intentionally set.

Officials say units from HPD, the Rockingham County Fire Rescue, the Harrisonburg Police Department and the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad were dispatched to the 2400 block of Silverbell Drive at approximately 1:10 a.m. on Sunday, April 18 for a reported structure fire.

Crews say smoke was coming from a ground-floor apartment. A fire was found inside, and had been controlled by a fire sprinkler.

Officials say no victims were found during a search, although two dogs were safely evacuated. During an investigation, officials say information was found that suggested the fire was intentionally set.

Officials say Marlon A. Organ, Jr., of Broadway, was arrested in connection with the fire and charged with burning or destroying a dwelling. Organ was committed to the Rockingham County Jail.

Due to the ongoing investigation, officials say specific information about the fire, including origin and cause, will not be released. Stay with WHSV for updates.

Portland, OR – Sprinkler system activated for cooking fire at hotel

Smoke alarms were blaring and water was flowing after one man’s cooking led to a small fire overnight.

Fire crews were called out to the Larkspur Landing Suite Hotel in Hillsboro just after 1:30 a.m. Once they arrived, firefighters saw one hotel room’s fire sprinklers were running and smoke was filling the corridor. While crews went to work, the hotel’s occupants were told to shelter in place.

Firefighters reached the hotel room the water and smoke were coming from to find a man trying to extinguish a fire in the room’s kitchen area. The fire itself was extinguished and never reached any other rooms — but water from the sprinklers had flowed into the hallway and several other rooms.

Crews turned off the water flow then used a water vacuum to clean up the affected areas.

The man did suffer some minor burns to his hands and legs, but he denied medical service. No other occupants were injured, but some were relocated to other rooms.

An investigation determined the cause of the fire was unattended cooking. Remember to always be present while cooking and to keep things that can burn away from stovetops.
