Residential, Single Family Home Napa, CA – Residential sprinkler system suppresses garage fire; No injuries reported March 22, 2016 viking210 A smoke alarm and sprinkler system helped to snuff out a fire that broke out in a north Napa home Saturday night, according to firefighters. Napa Fire was sent to the 2000 block of Trower Avenue at 11:15 p.m. after reports that a garage was on fire, Capt. Ty Becerra reported. The first of three fire units to arrive at the home saw light smoke coming from the garage, and firefighters found an ashtray inside the garage that had ignited combustible chemicals, according to Becerra. The homeowner, who had been in the garage that evening before going to bed, was awakened by a smoke alarm, took his wife and an infant outside and called 911. As firefighters were arriving, a sprinkler head activated in the garage and suppressed the flames, Becerra said. Fire crews stayed for about 45 minutes to help the homeowner clear out the remaining combustibles and control the sprinkler flow, according to Becerra. No injuries to the family or firefighters were reported. A damage estimate was not immediately available, but Becerra said damage appeared to be limited to items inside the garage.
Manufacturing, Other - Manufacturing Brantford, ON, Canada – Overnight foundry fire contained with help from sprinkler system March 13, 2016 viking210 Brantford Fire Department Platoon Chief Herb Van Der Made said at 1:25 a.m. firefighters from station 4 were called to the McLean Foundry at 247 Colborne St. W., where they could see smoke coming from the roof. A 911 call had come in from the foundry’s fire alarm company. Van Der Made said the fire appears to have started in the older section of the foundry, which was built in the 1930s. “We were met with a lot of heavy smoke going in, so we had to retreat,” he said. The firefighters found another way in, through a rear bay door, where they proceeded to extinguish “a really intense” fire over the following two hours. Holes were punched in the steel roof of the building’s younger section for ventilation, enabling aerial truck 9 to attack the fire from above. Van Der Made said a sprinkler system helped get the fire under control. Part of the building’s back roof fell due the fire damage. No one was working in the foundry overnight, and no one was hurt fighting the fire, according to Van Der Made. The business owners showed up and helped firefighters to access the building. Brantford police closed Colborne Street West from Shellard Lane to Lyndsay Street until at least 7 a.m.

Other - Retail, Retail Canton, MI – Sprinkler system helps saves salon in Victorian building from fire February 28, 2016 viking210 A Canton salon and spa owner has refused to let a fire and water damage shut down her business in a two-story Victorian building in Cherry Hill Village. “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass,” said Melissa Huetter, owner of Indigo Salon, Spa & Boutique. “It’s all about perseverance and resilience.” Huetter was out of town — hundreds of miles away — when she got word that a second-story fire occurred about 4 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, inside Indigo Salon. She caught a flight home within hours. Huetter said there was speculation the fire was electrical, but an official cause hasn’t been determined. The fire set off an alarm and a sprinkler system that doused the blaze before Canton firefighters arrived. “If the sprinkler system hadn’t been there,” Deputy Fire Chief Chris Stoecklein said, “that building could have been a total loss.” Because the fire occurred about 4 a.m., Stoecklein said, the salon, located at Cherry Hill and Ridge roads, could have been engulfed in flames before anyone noticed it. Still, Huetter said the sprinkler system caused widespread water damage to 50-60 percent of her salon because it sent water from the second floor throughout much of the west side of the building. The fire forced the salon to close for the busy Valentine’s Day weekend, but Huetter reopened the following Tuesday. Repairs are continuing, but Huetter and her 36 employees have managed to resume full service ranging from massages to facials to body waxing. She said the east side of the building wasn’t damaged like the west side. The entire spa side was untouched. “We are still offering everything that we originally offered,” Huetter said. “We are just doing it with modified logistics.”
