Henderson, NV – Golf course clubhouse fire held in check by sprinkler system

Authorities in Henderson say a cigarette discarded near an outside laundry chute is to blame for an accidental fire at a golf course clubhouse.  Fire Department spokeswoman Kathleen Richards says the large two-story building’s fire sprinkler system kept the fire in check until crews arrived in response to an alarm early Saturday morning.  No smoke or fire was visible when the first crew arrived, but firefighters found the fire burning in an exterior wall and attic of the SouthShore Golf Course clubhouse in the Lake Las Vegas area.  An alarm monitoring service reported the incident after a sprinkler system’s water flow alarm was activated. The business was closed at the time and there were no injuries. Damage was estimated $60,000.

 

Las Vegas, NV – Sprinklers assist firefighters in containing wood pallet fire at shopping mall

The smell of smoke may have alarmed some Boulevard Mall workers and shoppers early today. Turns out, it was a few wood pallets burning in one of the stores shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday, according to Clark County Assistant Fire Chief Larry Haydu. Ten units responded to the call at 8:57 a.m. and the first arriving engine found the small fire within three minutes and quickly extinguished it. Battalion 2 reported there was some smoke intrusion into approximately four stores and there was some water damage caused to the structure when the fire sprinkler system activated. There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Las Vegas, NV – Sprinkler system halts hotel fire started by careless smoking

Careless smoking is suspected after a fire this morning at a Fremont Street hotel forced the evacuation of three floors.

Firefighters responded just before 12:50 a.m. at the Golden Nugget Hotel, 129 Fremont St., according to a Las Vegas Fire & Rescue news release. The fire was reported on the ninth floor of the Carson Tower. The building has 18 floors. Guests on the eighth, ninth, and 10th floors were evacuated.

When firefighters arrived on the ninth floor, they found moderate smoke in the hallway. When they entered the room, they found the fire had already been brought under control because of an automatic fire sprinkler in the room. No one was in the room when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters found a small portion of a mattress was smoldering. There was also damage to the head board on the bed, and the rest of the hotel room had minor smoke damage. Damage was estimated at $10,000.

Investigators said they believe the fire is smoking related. The guest was in bed sleeping when the fire sprinkler activated allowing her to leave without injury.

The hotel returned to normal services within 90 minutes.

Las Vegas, NV – Sprinkler system extinguishes kitchen fire at Aria Hotel

One person suffered smoke inhalation after a fire Wednesday night on the second floor of the Aria Hotel.

Crews were notified around 10:05 p.m. about the alert at the hotel on 3750 Las Vegas Blvd. South, according to a Clark County Fire Department news release. The response included five engines, two truck companies, four rescue units and two battalion chiefs.

The fire was located in a second-floor kitchen. Crews reported the sprinkler system had activated and that the fire was out. Further investigation revealed the fire had been in large dishwashing machine.

The fire was contained to the machine, and there was no extension or damage to the structure itself.

A damage estimate has not been made.

Las Vegas, NV – Restaurant kitchen fire extinguished by sprinkler system

An automatic fire sprinkler system doused a stove fire in a Centennial Hills restaurant Sunday morning. Las Vegas Fire and Rescue said damage was kept to a minimum and there were no reported injuries.

Fire dispatchers received several 911 calls at 10:35 a.m. Sunday that flames and smoke were showing from the roof of the Fire Rock restaurant at 5990 Centennial Center Blvd., near U.S. 95. On arrival, only a haze was showing on the inside of the one-story building. Firefighters discovered there was a fire on the stove, flames and smoke extended up the exhaust pipe from the vent hood over the stove to the roof.

The fire on the stove was extinguished by automatic fire sprinklers. The flames went up the vent pipe to the roof and damaged an air conditioner and some of the roof decking. The restaurant is closed and will remain closed until repairs are made and an inspection is completed by the health department.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.

Reno, NV – Apartment fire caused by careless smoking contained by sprinkler system

The Reno Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 895 Kuenzil Street at 3:43 a.m.  The fire started in a third floor apartment from a carelessly discarded cigarette.  The fire caused moderate fire damage but was contained to the living area by an activated fire system.

The two sleeping occupants who were home at the time of the fire escaped without injury. 14 tenants of the apartment complex were temporarily relocated by the American Red Cross.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, if you have a fire in your home, the risk of dying decreases by 82 percent when fire sprinklers are present. Statistics show fire sprinklers can stop a fire in less than 90 seconds.

Although there were no injuries reported on this incident, The Reno Fire Department would like to remind everyone smoking materials (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, etc.) are the leading cause of fire deaths in the United States, and to take necessary safety precautions.

Las Vegas, NV – Sprinkler system helps extinguish fire caused by exploding fuel tank

An automatic sprinkler system extinguished a “flash fire” before it could spread last Friday morning at a warehouse near Valley View Boulevard and Desert Inn Road, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue. Two workers were wielding a 250-gallon diesel fuel tank when vapors ignited to cause the explosion at the shop in the 3000 block of Sirius Avenue.

The sprinkler system kicked in and the employees used fire extinguishers to quickly put out the blaze before firefighters arrived. There were no injuries. The building remained intact and damage was estimated at $1,500. The fire was deemed accidental.

Las Vegas, NV – Sprinklers keep pawn store fire that started on roof from spreading inside

A Super Pawn caught fire Monday night. The fire was reported around 10 p.m. in the 5900 block of West Lake Mead Boulevard, near Jones Boulevard. When firefighters arrived, there was a fire on the roof and smoke inside the building. The sprinkler system inside was preventing the fire was spreading further. There were no reports of injuries. The cause is under investigation.

Henderson, NV – Overnight fire at PetSmart store contained by sprinkler system; No animals injured

No animals were injured this morning after a fire this morning in the laundry room of a Henderson PetSmart. The Henderson Fire Department responded around 1 a.m. to the facility at 286 W. Lake Mead Pkwy., according to a Henderson news release. An employee working overnight discovered the fire and called 9-1-1.  The first arriving engine crew observed heavy smoke coming from the facility’s laundry room. The clothes dryer was the source of the fire, and crews extinguished it.

The building’s sprinkler system was activated and helped contain the fire. The store was closed at the time. There are about 80 pets at the facility.  Five engines, two trucks and two rescue units responded. There were no injuries.  The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental. Total loss is estimated at $5,000.
