Elgin, IL – (NO MEDIA COVERAGE) Sprinklers limit spread of fire at car dealership

On Sunday February 28, 2016 at 1920 hours, the Elgin Fire Department responded to 1385 E. Chicago Street (Biggers Chevrolet) for flames visible from the roof. Elgin Police Department units arrived first and confirmed there was fire on the roof.  Police and fire units were delayed getting into the property due to the presence of security gates.

The fire response was upgraded to a Box Alarm level bringing in seven additional area fire departments. The fire was quickly extinguished and upon initial investigation the buildings sprinkler system had activated confining the fire and limiting its spread.  Additionally, ladder companies accessed the roof and found fire extension around a vent stack which was also quickly confined and extinguished.  The fire was brought under control in approximately 40 minutes.

The damage was confined to a heating unit in the Shop area, a spray booth and the roof covering. The preliminary damage report is estimated to be approximately $40,000 to the structure and contents.  No vehicles were damaged during this event.

Elgin Fire Department investigators were called to determine the cause and the origin of the fire and no firefighters or civilians were injured due to this event.

Middleburg Heights, OH – Possible arson fire at hospital contained with help from sprinkler system

The city’s detective bureau is reviewing a Feb. 21 fire at Southwest General Health Center. An employee saw smoke in an Emergency Department’s hallway at 8 p.m.  He and another staff member located the fire in the clean utility room in which the sprinkler system sprayed water throughout the room. The emergency area, which became flooded, was evacuated.

The city’s fire department arrived and extinguished a burning clean linen cart in that room. One of two carts had melted plastic on it and charred towels, blankets and gowns that were scattered across the room. The scene was cleared at 9:38 p.m. An officer went to the hospital at 12:21 a.m. Feb. 22 and recovered evidence from the fire. He found items that may have been used to start the fire.

Rochester, NY – Kitchen fire on 14th floor of residential high-rise controlled with help from sprinkler system; No injuries

There was a small fire Tuesday night at the city’s new downtown residential high rise. It started as the result of a cooking accident in the kitchen of one of the units on the 14th floor of Tower 280 around 8 p.m. The automatic sprinkler system that was triggered did cause water damage to three elevators, to the apartment where the fire started and some units below it.  No one was injured.

League City, TX – (NO MEDIA COVERAGE) Single sprinkler helps firefighters extinguish apartment fire

On Tuesday, February 09, 2016, at 8:35 p.m., the Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at the Broadstone Walker Commons Apartments located at 1751 West Walker Street.

Before arriving on the location the Fire Department was notified of fire leaping out a third story balcony with heavy fire and smoke visible. Once on location, firefighters deployed an “Apartment Lay” up three flights of stairs and connected a 1 ¾ inch attack line to suppress the fire. During this time, the fire sprinkler system with one sidewall sprinkler head activated, which controlled and suppressed the majority of the fire.

The quick action from the firefighters completely stopped the advancement of the fire from entering into the attic and open spaces. A fast responding fire sprinkler system and aggressive team of firefighters absolutely save the complex from extensive fire damage and thousands of dollars of direct fire loss, not to mention the lives perhaps saved. The fire is currently under investigation by the League City Fire Marshal’s Office.

Manchester, NH – Apartment fire mostly extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries

A sprinkler system quickly put out a fire in Manchester Sunday evening. Around 5:30 p.m., firefighters were called to a home on Harvell Street, where a second-floor apartment had caught on fire.  No one was home, but firefighters said the front door was unlocked.  The apartment’s sprinkler system put out most of the flames.

“The first company on scene [saw] smoke showing from the second floor, so we had an initial attack lined to the second floor and knocked the rest of the fire down,” said District Fire Chief Hank Martineau.

Firefighters don’t yet know how the fire started but said it appears to be accidental.

Nacogdoches, TX – Fire in student center at Stephen F. Austin University put out by single sprinkler

A fire that damaged the food court area of the Stephen F. Austin State University Student Center Tuesday evening is under investigation. A small fire activated a single fire sprinkler in a kitchen area on the first floor of the Baker Pattillo Student Center around 9:00 p.m., according to a news release.

The building’s fire suppression system was activated and the building was evacuated. No injuries were reported, the release stated. The SFA University Police Department and Nacogdoches Fire Department responded.

“There was only minor damage from the fire, and the smoke was cleared by the smoke evacuation system,” said Dr. Steve Westbrook, vice president for university affairs. The University says some food services on the first floor atrium of the building will be temporarily closed until further cleaning and inspection.

Sonoma, CA – Sprinkler system halts electrical fire at nail salon

An electrical malfunction in a storage room is suspected of causing a fire at a nail salon in Sonoma on Tuesday evening, a fire battalion chief said.

A sprinkler system extinguished most of the fire at the Nails Pro salon at 201 W. Napa St., Sonoma Valley Fire and Rescue Authority Battalion Chief Bob Norrbom said.

The fire department received a water flow alarm and a call from someone in the nearby CVS pharmacy around 7 p.m., Norrbom said.

Lancaster, PA – Sprinkler system extinguishes fire in four-story commercial building

A sprinkler system knocked down a two-alarm commercial building fire in downtown Lancaster Wednesday night, according to a Fox43 report.  Firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm in a four-story building at East King and North Christian streets at about 7 p.m., according to the report.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke on the upper floors of the building that houses an art store on the first floor and neighbors the Lancaster County courthouse complex. Crews sounded a second alarm in response to the heavy smoke that stemmed to the fire likely ignited in the basement elevator room, the report said.

The building’s sprinkler system extinguished the fire, which a cleaning crew inside didn’t know had broke out until firefighters arrived, according to the report. The crew made it out of the building safely. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Portland, OR – Sprinkler system contains parking garage fire at Oregon Health & Science University

Officials say no one was injured in a parking structure fire at OHSU Saturday. The fire was reported around 7 p.m. inside an underground parking garage in the 800 block of SW Campus Drive. The fire was contained to just one car thanks in part to a sprinkler system. The cause of the fire has not yet been released.
