Grande Prairie, AB, Canada – Fire in apartment building contained to one suite by sprinkler system

A fire prompted an evacuation of Willow Place on Saturday evening but was contained to one apartment suite.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department received the call at 6:26 p.m. Platoon chief Tony Lutzmann said that the sprinkler system managed to control the fire and firefighters went in to ensure the fire was extinguished.

“There was a considerable amount of smoke throughout the building so the building was evacuated,” Lutzmann said, adding that they had a transit bus on scene to provide temporary shelter for the evacuees.

Operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Willow Place is a 57-unit apartment building for people with mental health conditions.

Lutzmann noted that the cause of the fire appeared to be “cooking-related” but added that the investigation was ongoing. He also offered advice on kitchen fires.

“Don’t leave cooking unattended and ensure you have something to extinguish the fire in case there is a kitchen fire,” he said.

Victim Services and the Red Cross also attended the scene.

Everson, WA – Fire at nylon casting business controlled by sprinkler system

An Everson nylon casting business that has suffered two substantial fires since 2006 had another Thursday evening, but the building’s sprinkler system kept damage to a minimum and allowed everybody to get out safely.

Whatcom County Fire District 1, with the assistance of crews from the Lynden Fire Department and North Whatcom Fire and Rescue, responded to a report of a commercial fire at 7:52 p.m. at the Nylatech, Inc. facility at 223 W. Main St. 

According to District 1 Chief Mel Bankers in an interview Friday with The Bellingham Herald, a machine that heats up raw plastic and spins it at a high rate of speed before pouring it into a mold malfunctioned.

“One of the employees heard a loud pop,” Blankers told The Herald. “They think it was the sound of a bolt breaking in the machine. After that happened, plastic began to leak out, and it was extremely hot — near its flash point. When the fumes found an ignition source, they ignited.”

Moosic, PA – Laundry fire at assisted living facility contained with help from sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Some residents had to be removed from an assisted living facility in Lackawanna County on a very cold night after a dryer caught fire. Fire crews were called to Oakwood Terrace in Moosic around 8 p.m. last Wednesday. The assisted living facility along Gleason Drive is home to 45 elderly people. The fire started in the laundry room, and fire crews say the sprinkler system activated which helped contain the flames. Crews were forced to evacuate part of the building. With the help of police, ambulance crews, staff members, and some bystanders, 15 residents were moved to Moosic Alliance Community Church right across the street. The other 30 residents remained inside Oakwood Terrace.

“Right now, we’re working on the salvage. We’re working on getting some of the water off the floor from the hose line, and our intention tonight is to get everyone back in the building,” said Old Forge Fire Chief Mark Tagliaterra. No injuries were reported in this fire, and crews credit the overwhelming amount of manpower with getting these residents to safety, quickly. Those 15 residents were able to go back into Oakwood Terrace late Wednesday night.

Queensbury, NY – Sprinkler system puts out fire at resort hotel and indoor water park

Firefighters responded to a smoky fire Tuesday night at the Great Escape Lodge, but the hotel was closed to guests at the time and no injuries or major damage was reported. The fire was spotted around 7 p.m. and started in the bar area of the Tall Tales Tavern restaurant in the lodge, according to Queensbury Central Fire Chief Richard Jones. Minor damage was reported.

A spokeswoman for Great Escape owner Six Flags said Wednesday that the fire was traced to spontaneous combustion, as rags and floor stain were placed in a small plastic trash container ignited, and the lodge’s sprinkler system was triggered and knocked it down.

Firefighters from around the region responded as mutual aid and used industrial fans to ventilate the building, Warren County Fire Coordinator Brian LaFlure said. “There was quite a bit of smoke,” LaFlure said.

LaFlure referred comment to Jones for details as to the investigation, but he could not be reached Wednesday morning. Six Flags Great Escape President Eric Gilbert said Tuesday night that there were no guests in the hotel at the time, but two staff members who were in the building safely evacuated.

Company spokeswoman Brittany Gillespie said Wednesday morning that the fire will not keep the lodge from re-opening Wednesday afternoon as planned. The restaurant suffered “minimal” damage, but it was unclear whether it would be open for guests on Wednesday. The lodge was not open Tuesday night because it closes some weekdays during the winter for routine maintenance, Gillespie said.

Waterloo, IA – Sprinkler system activated for fire at plastic recycling business

Firefighters extinguished a fire at a Waterloo plastic recycling business and vented smoke from the building Tuesday night.

About 25 people were working at Green Line Polymers, 300 Ansborough Ave., when the fire broke out in a bale of plastics around 5:55 p.m.

The business was evacuated, and the building’s sprinkler system held the fire in check until Waterloo firefighters arrived and finished it off.

No injuries were reported.

Roselle, NJ – Fire in DPW garage contained by sprinkler system

Units from the Roselle and Linden Fire Depts. were called out to the Department of Public Works (DPW) building on the 1100 Block of Chandler Ave. at approximately 7 p.m. on Sunday evening after a fire broke out in the back area of the building. Correction: According to authorities, a heater pipe which was a gas heater came apart blew flames out the on to a pallet of leave bags. The sprinkler system activated and helped to contain the fire until the firemen arrived and turned off gas and finished extinguishing the fire. No major damage or injuries were reported.

Stafford, TX – (no media coverage) Patio fire kept from spreading inside apartment by sprinkler systems

** Fire Department Reported – No Media Coverage ** On the evening of 01/02/2019, Stafford Fire Department was dispatched to an apartment fire in the 3300 block of Dove County in Stafford, unincorporated Fort Bend County, TX. Personnel arrived to find a working fire on a back patio that had breached the doorway and had begun to come inside of the apartment. Three sprinkler heads activated inside of the apartment which kept the fire contained to only the unsprinklered open air back patio. Fire suppression personnel quickly extinguished the fire on the back patio. The apartment in which the fire occurred suffered smoke, heat, and water damage from fire suppression. The apartment on either side of the affected unit also suffered minor damage.

Baton Rouge, LA – Grease fire at restaurant extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Baton Rouge firefighters responded to a kitchen fire at the Walk On’s on Burbank.

The Fire department got the call around 6 p.m. Sunday night. Authorities immediately evacuated the restaurant luckily the sprinkler system put the fire out.

The fire was ignited by grease in the kitchen, damages were minimal and no injuries reported.

The restaurant says they aim to be back in business tomorrow pending inspection of suppression systems.

Rockford, IL – Storage room fire in retail store extinguished by sprinkler system

The Rockford Fire Department responded to Chateau More Than a Dress, 2508 South Alpine Road in the Alpine Village Shopping Center, around 7:45 p.m. Monday night after a sprinkler alarm went off in the business. Firefighters found smoke inside the business and an extinguished fire was discovered in a back storage area. The fire was put out by the sprinkler system. Fire damage was limited to a small area of merchandise. The business and a neighboring business also suffered water damage. Investigators say about $15,000 in damage was done. Other business in the strip mall were unaffected and remained open. No one was hurt.

Shrewsbury, MA – Fire at Walgreen’s store put out with help from sprinkler system

Aided by the building’s sprinkler systems, firefighters quickly put out a fire at the Walgreens drugstore on Route 9 on last Tuesday night. Merchandise in the store sustained “extensive” fire and smoke damage, but the building itself did not sustain major damage, according to the Fire Department. Everyone got out of the building uninjured. The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the source of the fire. Firefighters went to the store at 8:40 p.m. Tuesday and encountered heavy smoke inside the building. The sprinkler system had kept the fire from becoming worse, the Fire Department said. It took firefighters about 10 minutes to extinguish the blaze. The store was closed Wednesday while Walgreens cleaned up.
