Lone Tree, CO – Storage room fire at shopping mall extinguished by sprinkler system

The sprinkler system extinguished a small fire inside Park Meadows Mall on Thursday afternoon, South Metro Fire Rescue said.  The fire was contained to a storage room in a back hall, officials said.  The food court was closed and evacuated while crews made sure everything was safe. The rest of the mall remained open.  Firefighters were leaving the scene a little after 3 p.m. The food court was likely to reopen soon after that.

Rochester, MN – Apartment kitchen fire is put out by sprinkler system; No injuries

The Rochester Fire Department says it was called to Oak Ridge Apartments on North Broadway around 5:22 pm Friday and found fire alarms sounding and light smoke coming from a second floor unit. The flames were put out by a sprinkler head in the apartment before firefighters arrived, but crews cleared out the smoke with ventilation fans and cleaned up the water to prevent any more damage.  No one was injured but heat and flames damaged kitchen cabinets, an exhaust hood, and a stove top.  The fire is being blamed on combustible material near the stovetop and is being called an accident.

Peterborough, NH – Single sprinkler extinguishes nursing home blaze; No injuries reported

The Peterborough Fire Department said a fire at a nursing home Saturday is a good example of the value of having a working sprinkler system in every building.  Firefighters said they were called to Pheasant Wood Center just before 1 p.m. because the fire alarm was sounding.  Officials said water was runnning out from unde the door to the maintenance room on the firsit floor and smoke could be smelled on the first and second floors. Officials said a single sprinkler head had activated and extinguished the fire.  The fire was caused when an electric fan caught fire and ignited other nearby combustibles.

Thanks to the sprinkler, the fire was contained and none of the residents or the operation of the nursing home were impacted by the fire.

New Brunswick, NJ – Fire on 11th floor of luxury high rise apartment building put out with help from sprinkler system

City officials say no one was injured in a kitchen fire, ignited in an apartment at The Aspire, 135 Somerset St., on February 22. The emergency call came in at 3:05 p.m., with firefighters arriving on the scene within three minutes. The fire, on the eleventh floor of the luxury building, was quickly knocked down and firefighters were able to clear the scene by 5 p.m., said city spokesperson Jennifer Bradshaw. Firefighters believe the fire was caused by a cooking accident. The building sprinkler system activated and helped extinguish the flames. While there were fortunately no injuries, the apartment sustained water damage.  A second alarm was called because the blaze was in a 17-story high rise, with support coming from Edison, Sayreville, East Franklin, North Brunswick and East Brunswick fire departments.  The Aspire, built by Boraie Development in New Brunswick, opened in 2015. It is steps from the New Brunswick Train Station and across the street from the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Rutgers Medical School and the Rutgers University campus.  It includes 238 studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments.

Uwchlan Township, PA – Electrical fire at software company office put out with help from sprinkler system

An electrical fire forced the evacuation of an office building in the Eagleview Complex Thursday. Firefighters were called to Bentley Software at 685 Stockton Drive for a fire at 12:36 p.m.

Lionville Fire Company Deputy Chief Michael Holmes said the fire was contained to the electric room on the second floor of the building. All employees safely evacuated, the building sprinkler system activated and firefighters used dry power extinguishers to contain the fire until PECO was able to respond an turn off the power, Holmes said.

Holmes said the fire was under control in 20 minutes. He described the damage to the structure as minimal, but that there was extensive damage to the electrical system of the building, Holmes said. The company’s main computer servers were located in another building in the complex, he said.

Firefighters checked the roof for extension of hidden fire and fans to remove smoke.

Jeff Purcell, Pennsylvania State police Fire Marshal, said there was no information on the cause or amount of damage at this time. The fire is being investigated by the Chester County Fire Marshals office and the State Police Fire Marshal.

Lionville was aided by Minquas and West Whiteland Fire companies.

Newport News, VA – Trash chute fire in multi-use residential building extinguished by sprinkler system

Newport News multi-purpose building was evacuated Thursday afternoon after a fire started in a trash chute, an official said. Firefighters responded to a report of an alarm activation reporting smoke inside the building in the 200 block of Nat Turner Blvd. shortly before 3 p.m., Battalion Chief Matthew Haraburda said at the scene. The building has a medical facility on the first floor with apartments above it, he said. There, they found that fire had started in the chute, but it was extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system, he said. Firefighters checked to make sure the fire had not spread and cleared smoke from the building, he said. No injuries were reported.

Haraburda said it was a good thing the building’s alarm system and sprinklers were working properly. It helped prevent the fire from spreading and ensure people inside got out safely. “When we got here, everybody had evacuated the building, which was good for us,” he said.

Racine, WI – Apartment kitchen fire extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

An accidental kitchen fire broke out in a Racine apartment building  last Wednesday.  At 12:57 p.m. Wednesday, the Racine Fire Department was dispatched to 1637 Washington Ave. for a structure fire at a two-story apartment building in the Uptown area. The Racine Police Department also responded to the scene. Smoke alarms alerted residents to a fire inside the building, according to a Fire Department news release. The automatic sprinkler system extinguished a kitchen fire in one of the apartments. No injuries were reported, and occupants in other apartments were able to remain there, the release stated. As of Wednesday afternoon, restoration crews were working to determine if tenants from the affected apartment could continue to stay there. The cost to restore the apartment to its original condition was estimated at $2,500.

Buellton, CA – Restaurant fire contained with help from sprinkler system; No injuries reported

A fire that began in the kitchen area at the AJ Spurs Restaurant in Buellton Tuesday afternoon was contained with the help of the building’s internal sprinkler system, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.  Four engine companies and a battalion chief were dispatched shortly after 4 p.m. to the popular bar and eatery at 350 E. Highway 246, said Mike Eliason, a Fire Department spokesman.  It took crews about 25 minutes to knock down the flames, which traveled up through a ventilation pipe to the roof, and also extended to a nearby attic area, Eliason said.

The building’s internal fire-sprinkler system helped contain the blaze.  An investigator was dispatched to the scene to look for the cause of the fire.  The restaurant was expected to remain closed for an unknown period of time, Eliason said.  No injuries were reported in the incident.

Marquette, MI – Restaurant kitchen fire extinguished with assistance from sprinkler system

Minor injuries were reported after a small stove flare up at a Marquette restaurant Saturday afternoon. At 4:01 p.m., the Marquette City Fire Department was dispatched to the Border Grill restaurant at 800 North Third Street on a report of an explosion. As fire crews arrived to the scene, the building was being evacuated. Restaurant staff explained that a small explosion had occurred in the back kitchen area on top of a stove. The building’s sprinkler system, along with the stove’s Ansul system, quickly extinguished the fire that occurred as a result of the explosion. Fire crews secured the building and assisted the Border Grill staff with removing the water from the building to keep water damage to a minimum. Crews cleared the scene at 4:57 p.m. Two minor injuries were reported in the incident. The cause of the explosion and fire remain under investigation

Greenwood Village, CO – Sprinkler system helps control arson fire at apartment building

A man was arrested and taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon after police said he was linked to multiple fires in their jurisdiction. Joe Bradley, Patrol Commander for Greenwood Village Police, said officers and firefighters responded to a fire in an apartment at Timber Creek. When firefighters and police arrived on scene, they located an active fire. South Metro Fire spokesman Eric Hurst told CBS4’s Dillon Thomas the sprinkler system in the unit had engaged the fire.

As firefighters cleared the building, police were warned of an unaccounted for person in the apartment. Shortly after, a different 911 call reported a separate fire along Yosemite. When police arrived to investigate the fire at Stoney Brook Apartments, they located an adult male allegedly attempting to set a bush on fire. Police said they attempted to contact the adult male who fled on foot. Police would later tackle the suspect and arrest him. Police then identified the suspect as the same person who was listed as missing in the apartment fire. Police said there was no threat to the community following the arrest.
