Webster Groves, MO – Fire in senior living community contained by sprinkler system; No residents or staff injured

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. last Wednesday, a fire broke out at the Laclede Groves Senior Living Community in Webster Groves. The facility is located in the 700 block of South Laclede Station Road.
The call came out as a 2-alarm fire. When firefighters arrived on scene they found heavy smoke on the second floor of the facility. The fire had been contained to an apartment on the second floor by the sprinkler system.  Firefighters evacuated residents from the second floor, and later from the rest of the building.  The second floor was damaged by fire, smoke, and water.  Residents are currently being relocated to other facilities till investigators can assess the damage. No residents or staff were injured in the fire. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation. 

 

Grand Forks, ND – Two dogs rescued after sprinkler contains apartment fire; No injuries reported

Two dogs were rescued from an apartment fire in Grand Forks Monday evening.  The fire department says shortly after 5:15 p.m., fire crews were sent to the 4340 Pioneer Drive on a report of a fire alarm and smoke coming from a first floor apartment.  Firefighters entered that apartment unit and encounter heavy black smoke and found a fire on top of the stove area. A sprinkler head helped contain the fire.  No people were home but crews did rescue two dogs.

The fire unit and surrounding units sustained heavy smoke and water damage.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Columbia, MO – Activated sprinkler helps keep loading dock fire at Aldi store from spreading inside building

A semi trailer next to the Aldi grocery store on Green Meadows Road caught fire last Sunday, according to the Columbia Fire Department.  The semi trailer was parked at the loading dock at the side of the grocery store when it caught fire. The driver was able to get out safely and is working with investigators to determine the origin of the fire, Assistant Chief Jerry Jenkins said.  The fire department was dispatched to the scene at about 5:30 p.m. No one was injured.

The fire in the truck activated the sprinkler system inside Aldi, Jenkins said. Customers exited the building and were helped out of the area by the Columbia Police Department, which was also helping direct traffic.  The fire was still under investigation as of Sunday evening. Aldi employees at the scene had no comment.

Pleasantville, NJ – Warehouse fire contained by sprinkler system; Firefighters finish the job

Firefighters extinguished a fire Saturday in a commercial building in the 700 block of West Delilah Road.  Firefighters were dispatched to the ABC Supply Co. for a report of activated fire and water flow alarms at 4:10 p.m.  Fire crews smelled smoke, forced a door and found heavy smoke in the warehouse, Battalion Chief Scott Trythall said, and found materials inside the warehouse on fire.  “The sprinkler system was activated and contained the fire until we were able to locate the seat of the fire and extinguish it all the way,” Trythall said.  The incident was under control within 45 minutes, he said.  The Farmington and West Atlantic City volunteer fire companies covered the Pleasantville station while the South Jersey Airport Fire Department’s Station 1 and Northfield and Absecon companies responded to the scene, Trythall said. Pleasantville police also responded and Tricare EMS provided rehab, he said.  There were no injuries, Trythall said.

Plainfield, IL – Sprinkler system saves business from $350,000 in estimated damages; No injuries reported

A fire sprinkler system is credited with extinguishing a fire in the restroom at the Merlin 200,000 Miles Shop, 14120 S. Route 30. On Tuesday, April 3 rd at 12:21 P.M. the Plainfield Fire Protection District responded to a fire alarm for this business. While in route to the fire a 9-1- 1 call came in advising that there was a fire in the business. Upon arrival firefighters found a fire sprinkler head within a restroom activated and it had extinguished a small fire that left some burn marks on the wall. It is estimated that $350,000 was saved due to the fire sprinkler system extinguishing the fire and making it possible for the business to remain open. The fire sprinkler system prevented the fire from spreading and causing extensive damage to the building and its contents as well as preventing anyone from getting injured by the fire.

Salem, VA – Structure fire at landfill mostly extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Crews have extinguished a structure fire at a landfill in Roanoke County.  The fire, which was determined to have been sparked by a welding operation, was burning at the Smith Gap Regional Landfill, according to Roanoke County Fire & Rescue.  The welding was taking place on a garbage tipper machine when combustible materials ignited in that area, causing a fire in the garbage tipper.  When the first crews arrived, they reported heavy brown smoke coming from the side of the building, according to Jennifer Conley Sexton with Roanoke County Fire & Rescue.  A call for the fire came in shortly after 4 p.m. from staff at the landfill and told dispatchers they evacuated the building.

Crews at the scene marked the fire under control in about 30 minutes, according to Sexton, who also say there were no injuries reported.  The fire department said the facility’s sprinkler system extinguished most of the flames.  Damage estimates are between $5,000-$10,000.  The landfill is owned by the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority.  Firefighters from the Masons Cove, Catawba and Fort Lewis stations responded to the fire.  Fire investigators are now on scene.

Elk Grove, IL – No injuries after sprinklers extinguish apartment kitchen fire

Two apartments were left temporarily uninhabitable after a kitchen fire activated sprinklers in a second floor unit of a building in the 900 block of Charlela Lane, Elk Grove Village, Saturday (April 14) evening.  Red Cross representatives responding to the scene arranged housing for six people from two households on the first and second floors of the building. Elk Grove Village Fire Chief Richard Mikel said no injuries were reported.  Mikel said a stovetop kitchen fire activated a sprinkler and alarm at 5:46 p.m. in a second story unit. Besides an automated alarm, Mikel said calls reporting the fire were also made to 911. The fire was immediately extinguished by the sprinkler system. Mikel said the second floor unit suffered smoke damage and water entered into electrical systems. The first floor apartment directly under the fire unit also suffered water damage from the sprinkler.

New Orleans, LA – Fire at nightclub on Bourbon Street is kept from spreading by sprinkler system

The Oz nightclub on Bourbon Street caught on fire this afternoon after DJ equipment sparked a blaze.  The New Orleans Fire Department arrived at the club just after 12:15 p.m. to see heavy black smoke billowing out of the second floor roof line.  The club was open, but no one was in the building other than the manager and the bartender, according to the NOFD.  The manager told firefighters he heard popping noises coming from the second floor and saw flames coming from the DJ equipment and attached wires.  The building’s sprinkler system was activated and helped keep the fire from spreading, according to the NOFD.  Twenty-two NOFD personnel in seven units responded to the fire, which was placed under control by 12:30 p.m.  No injuries were reported.

Ponoka, AB, Canada – Fire in recycle bin at government building extinguished by sprinkler system

Ponoka RCMP are investigating a small fire that occurred at the Ponoka Provincial Building Wednesday around lunch. Along with police, the Ponoka County East District Fire Department were called to the scene where a blue recycle bin appears to have burst into flames. The building’s fire sprinkler system was set off, which extinguished the fire, and also covered a portion of the main floor. What was left of the bin was moved outside while RCMP investigated. A small amount of water was left on the floor near the sprinkler that went off.

Erie, PA – Sprinkler keeps dumpster fire from spreading inside restaurant

A restaurant near the Millcreek Mall had to be evacuated Friday afternoon after a fire broke out in a dumpster. It was reported at Cheddar’s Restaurant on Interchange Road just after 2 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the back of the building. That’s where the dumpster is located in an attached garage. The fire activated the sprinkler system, which quickly put out most of the flames. The flames did not spread, but they caused heavy smoke in the restaurant, which was open at the time. Firefighters had to ventilate the restaurant. Kearsarge’s assistant fire chief said the cause is under investigation. The Millcreek Township fire inspector and Erie County Department of Health were both called to the restaurant.
