Houston, TX – (No Media Coverage) Sprinkler system controls apartment fire caused by unattended incense burning

**NO MEDIA COVERAGE – Fire Department Reported** On Friday 02/23/2018, investigators responded to the Lexington at Champions Apartments in reference to an apartment fire. Tenants left incense burning, unattended, and it caught clothing on the floor on fire. The fire occurred on the 3rd floor of the apartment, in the tenants bedroom. One sprinkler head in the bedroom activated and kept the fire from spreading.

Holmdel, NJ – Fire in hospital ICU limited with help from sprinkler system; No injuries reported

A fire at Bayshore Medical Center caused patients to be transported to Riverview Medical Center. Hospital officials said the fire started in a toaster oven inside the break room of the ICU. Six patients were transported to Riverview Medical Center, according to April Dunic, a spokeswoman for the hospital.

“While the fire damage was very limited, water from the sprinkler system damaged certain areas of the hospital,” Dunic said. “As a result, several patients were relocated to different parts of the hospital and six patients were transferred to Riverview Medical Center. Clean up is underway and we expect normal operations very soon.

The hospital did not yet have a damage estimate. No patients or staff were harmed by the fire. Bayshore has 211 beds and Riverview Medical Center has 492. Holmdel police said that several agencies responded, including Holmdel Fire and First Aid as well as the Monmouth County Fire Marshal, Hazlet, Union Beach, Keyport Fire Departments and Hazlet, Keyport and Union Beach First Aid.

Orlando, FL – Arson fire in high school bathroom suppressed by sprinkler system; No injuries

A 14-year-old was charged with arson, Saturday, after an explosion that caused a fire inside a bathroom at Timber Creek High School, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Orange County Fire Rescue officials say the fire activated the sprinkler system inside the bathroom, putting the fire out. Officials say a secondary sweep of the campus showed another restroom was also set on fire. Firefighters say no one was hurt. Deputies say the teen is a student at Timber Creek High School.

Cypress, TX – (No Media Coverage) Kitchen grease fire extinguished by single automatic fire sprinkler

**NO MEDIA COVERAGE – Fire Department Reported** On Sunday February 18, 2018, Cypress Creek Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at 11111 Grant Road. Engine 21 arrived on location at Building 11 with active alarm. Units were told there had been a fire in unit 1128. Crew investigated and found a extinguished grease fire in the kitchen sink. A single sprinkler head activated and extinguished the fire.  PIO spoke with the tenant and he advised he was heating up grease and walked away to use the restroom. He came back out and the pot was smoking. He picked up the pot and carried it to the sink. During the moving of the pot it started to flame up so he sat it in the sink and turned the water on. The pot flared up and shortly after, the sprinkler activated and put the fire out. Property and contents lost valued at $10,000. Total property value, $260,000.

Peterborough, NH – Single sprinkler extinguishes nursing home blaze; No injuries reported

The Peterborough Fire Department said a fire at a nursing home Saturday is a good example of the value of having a working sprinkler system in every building.  Firefighters said they were called to Pheasant Wood Center just before 1 p.m. because the fire alarm was sounding.  Officials said water was runnning out from unde the door to the maintenance room on the firsit floor and smoke could be smelled on the first and second floors. Officials said a single sprinkler head had activated and extinguished the fire.  The fire was caused when an electric fan caught fire and ignited other nearby combustibles.

Thanks to the sprinkler, the fire was contained and none of the residents or the operation of the nursing home were impacted by the fire.

New Brunswick, NJ – Fire on 11th floor of luxury high rise apartment building put out with help from sprinkler system

City officials say no one was injured in a kitchen fire, ignited in an apartment at The Aspire, 135 Somerset St., on February 22. The emergency call came in at 3:05 p.m., with firefighters arriving on the scene within three minutes. The fire, on the eleventh floor of the luxury building, was quickly knocked down and firefighters were able to clear the scene by 5 p.m., said city spokesperson Jennifer Bradshaw. Firefighters believe the fire was caused by a cooking accident. The building sprinkler system activated and helped extinguish the flames. While there were fortunately no injuries, the apartment sustained water damage.  A second alarm was called because the blaze was in a 17-story high rise, with support coming from Edison, Sayreville, East Franklin, North Brunswick and East Brunswick fire departments.  The Aspire, built by Boraie Development in New Brunswick, opened in 2015. It is steps from the New Brunswick Train Station and across the street from the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Rutgers Medical School and the Rutgers University campus.  It includes 238 studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments.

Montreal, QC, Canada – Sprinkler system limits spread of fire at Atwater Market

The Atwater Market has reopened following an early morning fire at one of the food stands attached to the exterior of the building.

The structure is a temporary extension to the market during the winter months, built with removable walls and awning.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 3:30 a.m. on Friday.

Martin Farmer, chief of operations for the Montreal fire department, said flames and smoke could be seen jutting from the side of the building.

No one was injured, but damages are estimated at around $50,000.

Farmer said the building’s sprinkler system did its job, helping limit the spread of fire.

Covington, KY – Sprinkler system activates to tackle fire in mechanical room of senior living building

More than 160 seniors were displaced Thursday when the Golden Tower residential building caught fire.

The fire was contained to the mechanical room in the 11th Street building where something shorted out, reports indicate. The fire triggered the sprinkler system.

The residents of the building, which is operated by the Housing Authority of Covington, were placed in hotels and helped by the Red Cross.

It could be up to five or six days before they are able to return to their homes.

Uwchlan Township, PA – Electrical fire at software company office put out with help from sprinkler system

An electrical fire forced the evacuation of an office building in the Eagleview Complex Thursday. Firefighters were called to Bentley Software at 685 Stockton Drive for a fire at 12:36 p.m.

Lionville Fire Company Deputy Chief Michael Holmes said the fire was contained to the electric room on the second floor of the building. All employees safely evacuated, the building sprinkler system activated and firefighters used dry power extinguishers to contain the fire until PECO was able to respond an turn off the power, Holmes said.

Holmes said the fire was under control in 20 minutes. He described the damage to the structure as minimal, but that there was extensive damage to the electrical system of the building, Holmes said. The company’s main computer servers were located in another building in the complex, he said.

Firefighters checked the roof for extension of hidden fire and fans to remove smoke.

Jeff Purcell, Pennsylvania State police Fire Marshal, said there was no information on the cause or amount of damage at this time. The fire is being investigated by the Chester County Fire Marshals office and the State Police Fire Marshal.

Lionville was aided by Minquas and West Whiteland Fire companies.

Janesville, WI – Basement fire at residential care facility knocked down with help from sprinkler system

7 residents are displaced by a basement fire at Timber Trail CBRF in Janesville, Wisconsin. The Janesville Fire Department and Janesville Police were called to Timber Trail CBRF around 10:24 p.m. on February 22nd for a basement residential fire. JPD Units were the first to arrive and reported fire and smoke coming from the basement with a person trapped inside. JPD Units began an interior attack and quickly knocked the fire down. The automatic sprinkler system assisted in keeping the fire in-check. JPD Units started a swift primary and secondary search of the building and did not locate a resident. The search for the trapped resident was turned over to the Janesville Police Department.  7 people were displaced by the fire and damage is estimated at $15,000.  The fire is still under investigation.
