Kitchen fire at apartment building controlled by sprinklers (Holyoke, MA)

A sprinkler system in a Paper City apartment building did exactly what it was designed to do on Saturday after a resident left food to burn on a stove.  The alarm sent firefighters to 164 Sargeant St. just after 1 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, firefighters saw no outward signs of fire but the 5-story apartment building’s alarm and sprinkler system were activated. An investigation determined that a tenant in an apartment left food on the stove unattended, causing the building’s fire suppression system to activate. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Market fire quelled by sprinkler system (Victorville, CA)

The San Bernardino County Fire Department says it received a fire alarm activation call Thursday about the same time a paramedic crew reported smoke coming from the roof of the Pueblo Ranch Market in Victorville.  A Fire Department statement says arriving units evacuated about 100 people who were unaware of any problem. The fire was found to be in a second-floor electrical box and had set off a single sprinkler head, which checked the fire until firefighters could bring hose lines in and fully extinguish it. No one was injured.

Fire officials credit sprinkler system with minimizing damage in school fire (Bozeman, MT)

The Rae and Sourdough Fire Departments were dispatched to the Heritage Christian School for a fire alarm at 5:09 a.m. A deputy was first on the scene and advised there was heavy smoke in the building. The fire was declared under control at 6:37 a.m. and there were no injuries reported.

The fire department reports that the fire and associated damage was minimized because of the fire sprinkler and alarm system installed during the last remodel of the building. On Aug. 25, 2012, the school sustained significant damage in arson-related fire.

Fire at University of Illinois laboratory extinguished by sprinkler system (Champaign, IL)

Nobody was hurt in a fire at a University of Illinois laboratory on Wednesday afternoon. Urbana Fire Marshal Phil Edwards said firefighters were called to Roger Adams Laboratory (600 S. Mathews Ave.) at 4:13 p.m. We got a call that somebody reported smoke and flames coming from a closet in one of the rooms,” Edwards said.  By the time firefighters arrived, the building’s sprinkler system had already put out the fire, he said. Since the fire took place in an electrical closet, firefighters believe that electrical problems may have been the cause.
