Fresno, CA – Sprinkler system controlled fire at Amazon fulfillment center until fire crews arrived

Firefighters are investigating after a fire broke out at the Amazon fulfillment center in southwest Fresno on Friday morning.

The fire was reported around 1:45 am. Nearly a dozen fire units responded to the facility on Orange Avenue.

Fire officials say they found flames on the third floor of the fulfillment center. The sprinkler system had turned on and helped to keep the blaze controlled.

Firefighters knocked down the flames and prevented them from spreading further.

Fire crews have not determine what sparked the blaze. Witnesses tell Action News they believe the flames broke out on one of the robotics that carries pods.

They say the water from the sprinkler system flowed down to the two bottom floors.

Firefighters spent several hours throughout the morning removing the water.

Everyone inside the building was safely evacuated, and no injuries have been reported.

Officials were assessing the damage caused by the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Harrisonburg, VA – Sprinkler system activated for arson fire at apartment complex

The Harrisonburg Fire Department (HFD) says a Broadway man has been arrested in connection with a recent structure fire that officials believe appears to be intentionally set.

Officials say units from HPD, the Rockingham County Fire Rescue, the Harrisonburg Police Department and the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad were dispatched to the 2400 block of Silverbell Drive at approximately 1:10 a.m. on Sunday, April 18 for a reported structure fire.

Crews say smoke was coming from a ground-floor apartment. A fire was found inside, and had been controlled by a fire sprinkler.

Officials say no victims were found during a search, although two dogs were safely evacuated. During an investigation, officials say information was found that suggested the fire was intentionally set.

Officials say Marlon A. Organ, Jr., of Broadway, was arrested in connection with the fire and charged with burning or destroying a dwelling. Organ was committed to the Rockingham County Jail.

Portland, OR – Sprinkler system activated for cooking fire at hotel

Smoke alarms were blaring and water was flowing after one man’s cooking led to a small fire overnight.

Fire crews were called out to the Larkspur Landing Suite Hotel in Hillsboro just after 1:30 a.m. Once they arrived, firefighters saw one hotel room’s fire sprinklers were running and smoke was filling the corridor. While crews went to work, the hotel’s occupants were told to shelter in place.

Firefighters reached the hotel room the water and smoke were coming from to find a man trying to extinguish a fire in the room’s kitchen area. The fire itself was extinguished and never reached any other rooms — but water from the sprinklers had flowed into the hallway and several other rooms.

Crews turned off the water flow then used a water vacuum to clean up the affected areas.

The man did suffer some minor burns to his hands and legs, but he denied medical service. No other occupants were injured, but some were relocated to other rooms.

An investigation determined the cause of the fire was unattended cooking. Remember to always be present while cooking and to keep things that can burn away from stovetops.

San Rafael, CA – Arson fire at restaurant extinguished by sprinkler system

An arson investigation is underway after a San Rafael restaurant was set on fire Tuesday night, fire officials said Friday.

Fire crews responded at about 11 p.m. to a commercial building on Bellam Boulevard, in which a restaurant is located.

Firefighters discovered that someone broke into the restaurant and spread flammable liquid before lighting it.

The fire triggered the sprinkler system, which put out the fire before a lot of fire damage was done, according to fire officials.

Video surveillance captured at least one image of someone setting the fire, fire officials said.

Santa Barbara, CA – Sprinkler system kept fire in check at sushi restaurant; No injuries reported

Firefighters doused an early morning kitchen fire at Sushi Tyme restaurant in downtown Santa Barbara on Thursday, according to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.

Crews were dispatched at about 2:50 a.m. to the restaurant at 819 State St. for reports of fire alarms ringing, Capt. George Martinez told Noozhawk.

First-arriving crews found the restaurant filled with smoke and fire sprinklers going off, Martinez said, and additional firefighters were dispatched.

Firefighters pulled a hose to the front door of the structure and forced entry into the business, where crews discovered a small fire in the kitchen, Martinez said.

The fire sprinklers were able to douse most of the flames, Martinez said, adding that they prevent fire damage to most of the business.

No injuries were reported.

Three engine companies, a truck company, and a battalion chief were deployed to the scene.

The fire was determined to be accidental in nature, according to fire Engineer Kevin Corbett.

The restaurant will be closed until repairs can be made, Corbett said.

Winnetka, IL – Electrical fire at township office contained by single sprinkler head

The New Trier Township office in Winnetka temporarily closed due to an electrical fire that broke out in a utility room last week.

Winnetka Fire Department personnel responded to an alarm at the building, 739 Elm St., March 28 at 3:46 a.m., according to Chief Alan Berkowsky.

Upon arrival, they discovered smoke coming from the building’s basement and located the fire in a corner of a utility room, Berkowsky noted.

“The fire was contained by a single sprinkler head, which held the fire in check,” Berkowsky said. “Once we powered the (electrical) grid down, we extinguished the fire. If it wasn’t for the sprinkler head and the fire alarm system doing what they were supposed to be doing, I think that building would have had significant fire damage.”

Winnipeg, MB, Canada – Sprinkler system activated for fire at apartment building

A Winnipeg apartment building sustained “significant” smoke and water damage during an overnight fire on Monday, according to the City of Winnipeg.

When firefighters got to the scene, they found smoke and flames coming from the building.

Stoystown, PA – Sprinkler system activated for fire at apartment building

Firefighters had to carry a Stoystown-area woman to safety late Sunday after a fire damaged a section of her apartment building.

According to Stoystown Fire Chief Dave Johnson, the woman was found semi-conscious in her bedroom and was taken to Pittsburgh’s West Penn Burn Center for treatment due to her injuries.

The late-night response meant evacuating all of the Hite House’s residents from the building to Stoystown’s fire station a block away.

“Some of the residents had to be assisted from the building, but everyone was evacuated,” Johnson said, adding that no other injuries were reported.

Stoystown fire was alerted about the blaze at 11:04 p.m., he said.

Crews arrived to find smoke inside the building and one apartment with fire damage. Fortunately, the building’s sprinkler system did its job, but crews inside had to eliminate hot spots, Johnson said.

The three-story building suffered smoke damage through much of the facility, he added.

A second evacuation had to be conducted after a fire alarm signaled inside the building at approximately 2 a.m. Monday, but firefighters determined the alarm was faulty – perhaps due to damage sustained in the fire.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, Johnson said.

A state police fire marshal is investigating.
