Rochester, MN – Sprinkler system activated for fire at church; No injuries reported

An early Monday fire in the basement of a Rochester church caused considerable damage, but an alarm system and sprinklers kept things from becoming worse.

Alerted to a blaze at Peace United Church of Christ just after 2 a.m., firefighters arrived to find thick black smoke filling the building at 1503 2nd Av. NE., Fire Department spokesman K.C. Clark said.

The fire broke out in the church’s lower level between the sanctuary and an attached preschool. A portable water extinguisher was used to put out the main fire. An overhead sprinkler that had activated before firefighters arrived helped keep the fire from spreading, Clark said.

Damage was mainly confined to the area of the blaze, but there was a significant smoke on the main and lower levels, Clark said.

“Nearly all parts of the church will need remediation due to the smoke,” Clark said. “Things might have been much worse had the church not had an automatic smoke and fire alarm. Had the building not been protected by an alarm system, it is likely the building would have sustained significant fire damage.”

No one was in the building at the time, and no firefighters were hurt, Clark said.

A damage estimate was not immediately available. Officials have not determined a cause.

Kingston, NY – Sprinkler system activated for kitchen fire; No injuries reported

Around 10:45 p.m. Friday night, the Kingston Fire Department was called to 30 Broadway for an alarm sounding. Crews arriving on the scene forced their way into both 24 and 30 Broadway and found a kitchen fire at 24 Broadway.

The sprinkler system inside the building contained the fire. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and searched for trapped occupants while putting it out. Luckily, all occupants were able to safely evacuate the building without any injuries.

The cause of this fire remains under investigation by the Kingston Fire Department Fire Investigation team. 24 Broadway sustained minor smoke and fire damage but had significant water damage after the incident.

Austin, TX – Sprinkler system keeps high-rise fire under control until fire crews arrive

Firefighters knocked down a high-rise fire in downtown Austin early Thursday morning.

The Austin Fire Department says it started around 3 a.m. from improperly discarded smoking material in an apartment at 901 West 9th Street, just a few blocks north of Whole Foods Market.

Austin Fire reports the sprinkler system kept it under control until they got there.

ATCEMS transported one person to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

In total, three people are displaced.

One apartment has fire and water damage; another has water damage.

Martinsville, VA – Sprinkler system prevents fire from spreading at apartment complex

At approximately 1:30 a.m. Monday, Martinsville Fire & EMS responded to a structure fire at an apartment complex located at 1032 Mountain Road, Martinsville.

Firefighters encountered heavy fire coming from apartment #3 of the complex. The Martinsville Police Department evacuated tenants from the apartment complex, as all tenants made it out safely. Assistance was received from the Martinsville Police Department, Martinsville Electric Department, Henry County Department of Public Safety and Dyer’s Store Volunteer Fire Department. The local chapter of the American Red Cross also responded to assist the eight tenants who were displaced.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental with it originating in the kitchen, near the stove, due to unattended cooking. Martinsville Fire & EMS reminds everyone to be extra cautious while cooking.

“Unattended cooking remains our number one cause of accidental fires. Make sure you never leave a cooking appliance unattended while it is in use,” said Martinsville Fire Chief Ted Anderson.

That is the second time fire departments have responded to apartment complexes in recent days. On Saturday, agencies responded to a 7:30 p.m. call of smoke coming out of Apartment 19 on East Church Street, behind Piedmont Community Services and Daily Grind in Martinsville.

The occupant was outside when firefighters arrived. The apartment’s sprinkler system activated and prevented the fire from spreading. The cause of the fire is accidental, stated City of Martinsville Public Information Officer Kendall Davis.

Brossard, QC, Canada – Sprinkler system extinguishes fire at mosque; No injuries reported

An early morning fire at the Islamic Community Centre on Grande Allee Blvd. in Brossard, Que., was most likely started by an electrical issue, according to Longueuil Police.

Firefighters arrived at the mosque around 1a.m Saturday morning. The fire was already being extinguished by the building’s emergency sprinkler system. Firefighters were able to control the blaze in about 30 minutes.

According to security footage, there was nobody inside at the time. No injuries were reported.

Investigators say there is about $50,000 in damages.

Waterloo, IA – Sprinkler system activated for fire at Conagra plant

Waterloo Fire & rescue put out a conveyor belt fire, at the Conagra Grocery Products plant in Waterloo early Thursday morning.

Firefighters responded to the scene around 1:30 a.m., and the fire was extinguished by 1:48 a.m.

According to Fire Chief, Pat Treloar, the fire was located in the seed area of the plant, and there is considerable damage to the conveyor belt.

Treloar also said the sprinkler system worked effectively, and helped prevent the fire from escalating.

Racine, WI – Sprinkler system activated for furniture fire near apartment building; No injuries reported

Burning discarded furniture outside McMynn Tower Apartments, 110 Seventh St., filled the building with smoke late Friday evening. No one was injured.

The Racine Fire Department (RFD) responded shortly before 11:30 p.m. Friday to a report of a fire at the building’s north exit. Firefighters quickly extinguished the burning materials.

Smoke and heat from the burning furniture entered a stairwell to the 11-story, 124-unit building but a fire sprinkler head and an alarm system protected the building’s occupants. The fire was under control within about 20 minutes. Firefighters used positive pressure ventilation fans to remove smoke from the building.

The fire caused an estimated $40,000 damage to the structure and $3,000 to contents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Racine Police Department at 262-886-2300.

Santa Rosa, CA – Sprinkler system helps extinguish fire at pharmacy; No injuries reported

A fire ignited in a debris pile outside of a Rite Aid pharmacy in Santa Rosa early Wednesday morning, spreading into the building and causing an estimated $200,000 in damage.

Santa Rosa fire officials said the blaze was reported at 12:04 a.m. at the store located at 955 Stony Point Road.

When crews arrived, they found a pile of wood pallets and other debris burning against the back corner of the store. Heat from the blaze had shattered the exterior glass windows and doors, allowing flames to spread into the building’s rear storage area.

The flames also spread to the gas meter, igniting an intense natural gas fire that firefighters were eventually able to extinguish with the help of the building’s fire sprinkler system.

The store was closed at the time of the fire and no one was inside the building. Much of the retail area of the store had smoke and water damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Renton, WA – Sprinkler system contains fire to one room

An apartment fire was taken down early this morning and the sprinkler system helped allow residents to evacuate before it was too late.

The Renton Fire Department (RFD) said the fire started in the 300 block of S. 2nd around 3:30 a.m.

Crews had to immediately call for a full alarm when they arrived with smoke and fire bursting out of the home.

Skyway Fire, King County medics and the Tukwila Fire Department all ended up coming to help.

RFD officials have not yet determined how the fire started, the person who went to the hospital suffered smoke inhalation.

Firefighters say the building sprinkler system actually helped contain the fire itself to one room.

Seaford, DE – Sprinkler system activated for fire at hotel; No injuries reported

An accidental fire caused roughly $500 in damage to a hotel Wednesday, Delaware Fire Marshal’s Office spokesman John Galaska said.

The blaze at the Motel 6 in the 24000 block of Sussex Highway was reported shortly before 8:30 p.m., authorities said. The Seaford Volunteer Fire Department arrived to find smoke coming from one of the rooms.

The fire was controlled by the building’s automatic fire sprinkler system, and firefighters completed extinguishing it. The building was occupied, but all escaped without injury, Mr. Galaska said. Mutual-aid fire companies also assisted.

Investigators determined that the fire was caused by the failure of a charging electrical appliance.
