Salinas, CA – Fire in storage unit building controlled with help from sprinkler system

Salinas firefighters doused flames at a storage unit building at Bridge and Lake streets early last Friday. The fire was reported around 8:24 a.m. No one was injured in the fire and firefighters had it under control in about half an hour. The building’s automatic sprinkler system was activated before firefighters arrived and helped keep fire under control, Acting Battalion Chief Keith Emery said.

It’s unclear whether the fire originated outside the building or inside, Emery said. The cause remains under investigation. Jose Luis Hernandez is a nearby business owner and he alleged that the fire was started by people camping along the railroad tracks and trying to stay warm. This was the second fire that he said his employees reported in the last two days. Emery said firefighters respond to about two fires near railroad tracks daily.

Appleton, WI – Sprinkler system prevents further damage in day care stove fire

A single sprinkler head was able to extinguish fire from a stove top at an Appleton child care facility on Monday. At around 11:45 a.m., the Appleton Fire Department was sent to Appleton KinderCare on S. Oneida Street for a report of a fire in the kitchen. All staff and 65 children at the day care were able to safely evacuate the facility. When crews arrived, they had found that a sprinkler head was able to completely extinguish the fire, which had only damaged some nearby cardboard boxes. Officials say the fire started when a worker had placed empty boxes on top of the stove and a burner may have been inadvertently turned on. According to the Appleton Fire Department, this is the second incident in the past two months in which a sprinkler extinguished a fire in an Appleton building.

Gaithersburg, MD – Sprinkler system prevented fire from spreading at auto repair shop; No injuries reported

Two cars are left damaged after a fire started in a Gaithersburg auto repair shop.

According to the Montgomery County Fire Department, the fire broke out Thursday at about 7 am at J B Auto Repair on Rickenbacker Drive.

About 50 firefighters were on scene and found that the fire started in the engine compartment of a BMW vehicle, and extended to at least one other car.

Officials say the sprinkler system helped prevent the fire from spreading to other cars under repair inside the garage.

“Good thing it happened at the end of the shop. There were like 14 cars inside the shop, so two of them were the two last cars that got damaged. We were able to, I guess, get the issue solved early, but a lot of clean up to do,” explained J B Auto Repair owner, Jose Benitez.

Fire officials determined the cause to be accidental, but say they are aware that the BMW vehicle model does have a history of issues with fires starting in the engine area and believe that to have been the cause.

No employees or firefighters suffered injuries.

Overland Park, KS – Fire in loading dock area of office building held in check by sprinkler system

No injuries were reported after an electrical fire Monday morning at the Black and Veatch building. Crews from Overland Park and Leawood fire departments were called just after 8 a.m. Monday to the 114th block of Lamar Avenue. First units on the scene reported light smoke in the loading dock area. Building maintenance reported a fire in one of the building’s electrical control panels located on the first floor. The building was later evacuated. It took crews about 90 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Because the fire sprinkler system was keeping the fire in check, crews were able to isolate power to the effected panel. Black and Veatch sent their employees home for the day while they work to access damage to the electrical systems. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.

Charleston, SC – Sprinkler system activated for porch fire at apartment complex

Port Royal fire crews respond to a porch fire at a Lowcountry apartment on Friday morning.

Firefighters with the City of Beaufort-Town of Port Royal Fire Department and the Burton Fire District responded to the 1000 building at the Preserve at Port Royal apartment community.

Upon their arrival, fire crews say found a porch fire on the second story of the apartment building.

Fire crews say “damage was mostly limited to the porch but the heat also broke the windows between the porch and the apartment so there was smoke and minor heat damaga inside the apartment along with some water damage.”

Deputy chief of operations, Tim Ogden, says porch fires are an area of concern for the fire crew

“At the time these units were constructed the code required a residential sprinkler system which is in each apartment here,” Ogden said. “However, residential systems are designed by code to save lives by giving occupants time to escape a fire, not fully protect the property. The code did not require a sprinkler head on the porch and these porches are thus unprotected and susceptible to fire damage.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
