The action on screen came to an abrupt halt for Moviegoers at the AMC Sundial 20 Monday evening.

Fort Lauderdale, FL – Fifth floor hotel parking garage fire contained by sprinkler system

More than 100 guests were evacuated from a Fort Lauderdale hotel early Friday when a smoke and flames were seen in the parking garage, according to fire rescue officials.

A car caught fire about 7 a.m. on the fifth floor of the garage at the Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach hotel, at 551 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., fire officials said.

“The sprinkler system had activated and the fire was contained to that one vehicle,” said Battalion Chief Steve Gollan. “The hotel staff had already started to evacuate the building.

The evacuated guests waited on the sidewalk across the street on the beach while firefighters ventilated any lingering smoke from the hotel and the garage.

The smoke and water affected the fourth, fifth and sixth floors of the parking garage but people reported smelling smoke inside the hotel, he said.

“One of the biggest challenges we have is it’s basically a high-rise fire,” Gollan said. “We have to get all the gear and [firefighters] up there and it’s an enclosed parking garage so we had some difficulties getting all of the smoke out of the building.”

The evacuation lasted about 90 minutes but there were no reports of any injuries. The cause of the car fire is under investigation, he said.

Jacksonville, FL – Sprinkler system keeps condominium fire from spreading; Cause was lightning strike

Firefighters with Jacksonville Fire Rescue were sent to a condominium complex last Wednesday evening on the Southside.  The fire was sparked on the roof of a home at Montreux at Deerwood Lake on Touchton Road. News4Jax learned of the fire just after 5 p.m.  JFRD said the fire was likely due to a lightning strike. Embers from the fire dropped to the attic of the apartment, hit a sprinkler inside a home and melted it, which firefighters said likely helped the fire from spreading.  Two units were affected due to water damage. People living inside the units denied help from the Red Cross. No injuries were reported.

Fernandina Beach, FL – Hotel fire contained with help from sprinkler system

The Fernandina Beach and Nassau County Fire Rescue Departments put out a fire quickly at the Amelia Hotel and Suites on Fletcher Avenue Sunday morning.

The hotel’s alarm system alerted firefighters to the fire. Firefighters made their way to the second floor and found the automatic sprinkler system had been activated. When entering the room, firefighters found heavy black smoke and a small fire on the floor involving the bed.

All guests were evacuated from their rooms. Fernandina Fire Rescue says it took 15 minutes with the assistance from the sprinkler system to knock down the fire.

The hotel sustained water damage from the sprinkler activation. Fire officials say the fire is suspicious in nature and is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s Office along with the city Fire Marshal.

Palm Coast, FL – Student arson fire in elementary school bathroom extinguished by sprinkler system

Due to a small fire in a bathroom in Building No. 2, students at Rymfire were evacuated, but they returned to classrooms on the other side of the campus.  At approximately 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 18, the fire alarm at Rymfire Elementary School was activated and all students were evacuated. It was determined a student had set fire to a paper towel dispenser located in Building No. 2. The sprinkler system kept flames to the single bathroom.

With the threat of severe weather in the area, the buildings on the other side of campus were determined safe and all students were then moved into those rooms, as well as the gymnasiums. There were no injuries during this incident.

Crews with the Palm Coast Fire Department, as well as Flagler Schools Custodial, are in the process of clearing the area of water and getting classrooms cleaned, and students are returning to their classes. Students in the kindergarten and first-grade classrooms are being moved to alternate rooms at this time so that instruction can continue.  Flagler Schools does not anticipate this having a major impact on dismissal at 3:20 p.m. All after-school activities are still taking place.  School cleanup crews will work throughout the weekend to ensure the affected classrooms will be ready for students Monday.

In an email, Palm Coast Communications and Marketing Manager Cindi Lane said Fire Chief Mike Beadle said: “Fire is out by sprinklers, and we are on scene assisting with water damage. Situation under control.”

Palm City, FL – Fire put out in less than 20 minutes thanks to sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Martin County Fire Rescue officials extinguished a fire at a business on Southwest 42nd Avenue, a fire rescue official said Tuesday.

The amount of damage was not immediately available.

The fire, which is being investigated by the state fire marshal, caused no injuries, Wouters said.

Kearney, FL – No injuries after sprinkler system puts out arson fire at women’s shelter

A fire started in the Kearney Center’s women’s wing on Sunday night was quickly put out by its overhead sprinkler system. The Center is now finding alternate sleeping arrangements for its female clients. The fire was started in a laundry bin in the Kearney Center’s women’s wing just after 8 Sunday night, forcing the center to evacuate all its residents. Patricia Johnson, 28, is accused of starting the fire and faces a charge of first degree arson. Now, Kearney Center director Jacob Reiter says about 90 clients of the Kearney Center will have to sleep elsewhere after the wing was flooded by its overhead sprinkler system.

“We had about 87 women sleeping with us last night. We typically have between 80 and sometimes 120, and so we’re prepared to sleep them here on site,” Reiter said. “We kind of will use a different space than the women’s wing, for example like the dining room. And so, we have overflow sleeping accommodations like cots and things like that.” Reiter says the Red Cross has helped out with extra cots, and ServPro has been at the center removing water and dehumidifying the women’s wing. There are no damage estimates yet. At this time of year, the Kearney Center houses about 375 people per night.
