Commercial building fire extinguished by sprinkler system (Santa Rosa, CA)

Firefighters responded to a fire at a commercial building in Santa Rosa on Monday night that was related to a marijuana grow operation, fire officials said.  The fire had burned in a room that contained a marijuana grow, but the flames had been extinguished by a single sprinkler head, according to the fire department.  A fire investigator determined the fire was sparked by misuse of electrical equipment by the tenants.

Cat survives apartment fire thanks to fire sprinkler system (Portland, OR)

Firefighters who responded to a southeast Portland apartment fire could hear screaming inside and see smoke seeping from under the door. So they kicked in the door and found — a cat.

Fire spokesman Ron Rouse says the cat — named Dude — was fine after the firefighters took him outside Wednesday evening and gave him some oxygen.

Rouse says the apartment resident had taken some warm clothes from the dryer and set them on a couch near some oily rags, then left the apartment. The spokesman says the combination of heat and the oily rags created spontaneous combustion. The apartment’s automatic sprinklers contained the fire to the couch.

Damage minimized at aluminum fabricator fire thanks to sprinkler system (Beloit, WI)

American Aluminum Extrusion’s sprinkler system did its job, according to Deputy Fire Chief Bruce Hedrington.  “We had smoke 60 feet above the building when we were responding, but we didn’t see any fire because the sprinkler system did its job and knocked its down,” Hedrington said. “The sprinklers usually just kept it in check, but it did a great job.”  All employees were safely evacuated before firefighters arrived.

Sprinkler system contains third floor apartment fire (Chesterfield, VA)

“It could have been a disaster without the sprinkler system,” Battalion Chief Robby Dawson of Chesterfield Fire and EMS Fire Marshal’s office said. “More residents would have been affected and we would have been on scene at least two days doing an investigation instead of the few hours we were there. The sprinklers made the difference. The system saved lives.”

Deliberately set fire at high school extinguished by sprinkler system (San Jose, CA)

A small fire at a San Jose high school Sunday evening was deliberately set, according to fire officials. Firefighters found that a side door on a theater building had been set on fire, melting the plexiglass window and damaging siding on the building. The fire had been put out by a sprinkler by the time firefighters arrived on scene. An arson investigator has determined the fire was deliberately set. There were no injuries due to the fire, according to San Jose Fire Capt. Rob.
