Madison, WI – Residents and pets evacuated safely as sprinkler system tackles apartment cooking fire

A kitchen fire in a third-floor apartment displaced four people from an apartment building in the 8300 block of Flagstone Drive on the Far West Side Monday evening, according to a Madison Fire Department report.

The fire began after a resident walked away from the stove where oil was heating in a covered pot, the report said. When the resident returned, flames were coming out from under the lid of the pot and a fireball rose to the ceiling after he removed the lid. That prompted the automatic sprinklers to deploy, according to the report.

The combination of sprinkler water and grease initially caused the fire to spread, but the sprinkler eventually extinguishd the fire, the report said.

The fire was already extinguished by the time Madison firefighters arrived, the report said.

All occupants and their dogs were able to safely evacuate and nobody was injured. Damage was estimated at $12,000, the report said.

Simmesport, LA – Sprinkler system activates to stop fire in nursing home storage room

“Always on a Sunday.”

That’s what Bayou Chateau Nursing home owner Gerard LaCour could say in a moment of relief following the evacuation of his facility just hours earlier.

Around 6 p.m. Sunday, the nursing home’s sprinkler system and fire alarm were activated after what LaCour said were “problems in a storage room.”

First responders including Simmesport Police and Fire and Acadian Ambulance got to the nursing home and quickly worked to evacuate residents.

According to Acadian’s Twitter account, two patients were moved to other nursing facilities and one was taken to an area hospital.

According to the captain of Simmesport Fire Department and Simmesport City Councilman Jacob Coco, there was no fire damage, but there was water in the building due to the sprinkler system.

He said that much of that water was quickly cleaned up by members of the community who responded to the scene, including the mayor.

Coco said that once the scene was cleared, they were able to bring the residents back to the nursing home.

Sherwood Park, AB, Canada – Grease fire at retirement home controlled by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

A fire at Silver Birch Court last week resulted in the evacuation of 55 people.  During the evening of Thursday, March 16, Strathcona County Emergency Services responded to a fire alarm at Silver Birch Court, located in Sherwood Park and managed by the Heartland Housing Foundation.

As the alarm was triggered by a grease fire in an occupied unit, it was controlled by the building’s sprinkler system until first responders arrived to fully extinguish the fire. The water from the sprinkler flooded all four floors of the east wing of the affordable housing facility, resulting in considerable damage to the suite of origin; however, due to the rapid deployment of the sprinklers and firefighter response, no smoke damage was seen outside the suite of origin.

Strathcona County Victim Services staff, transit buses, RCMP and Enforcement Services provided on-site support for the evacuated residents of Silver Birch Court, and no injuries were reported. As of Friday, March 17, restoration services were on–site and work is being done to have residents return to their suites as soon as possible.

Glenwood, MN – Fire at high school limited to one room by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Fire sprinklers did their job at the Minnewaska High School Thursday night and helped contain a fire to a science room.

“Damage is fairly minor,” said Superintendent Greg Schmidt. “We’re thankful it was limited to one room and no one was hurt.”

Most of the damage was caused by smoke and water in the east academic wing of the one-story building, which houses the district’s 4-12 graders.

As a precaution to prevent students and staff from experiencing physical problems from the lingering smoke, all the classes were cancelled Friday in the district.

“It made a lot of sense to keep kids out of the building,” Schmidt said.

According to Starbuck Fire Chief Todd Johnshoy, a call at around 8:20 p.m. from a custodian at the school, as well as an automatic fire alarm, brought the Pope County Sheriff’s Department and fire departments from Starbuck and Glenwood to the scene.

When crews arrived flames were visible in the science lab but were quickly extinguished, Johnshoy said.

“The fire sprinkler system suppressed it and we went in and mopped up,” Johnshoy said. “Without the sprinklers there would’ve been a lot more damage.”

Schmidt said it appears the fire was contained to a work station cabinet in the science room and the ceiling tiles above it.

Johnshoy said the water damage was contained to a couple classrooms.

“The biggest problem is the smoke,” Johnshoy said. “Once you open up a building like that, it went through the hallways.Johnshoy said the cause of the fire was “undetermined” at this time and that a Fire Marshall was on the scene until about midnight investigating the blaze.

Schmidt said possible causes of the fire are suspected but he didn’t not want to comment until the Fire Marshall’s report was completed.

Schmidt praised the firefighters and law enforcement for their quick response and for getting the smoke out of the building.

The district’s insurance agent was expected to be on the scene Friday. Schmidt said he didn’t think the financial cost for the cleanup and repairs would be significant. “But certainly it’s a little disconcerting it happened.”

He said it’s expected that classes will resume Monday.

Riverton, WY – Sprinklers limit spread of fire at school bus garage; Only one bus damaged

Riverton’s bus barn caught fire canceling all bus routes this morning. The fire was reported at 7:00 pm Monday night.   Only one bus caught fire, the other thirty buses were saved by the sprinkler system installed just two years ago.  Buses in the barn are parked inches from each other so the Superintendent of Riverton’s School District said only losing one bus, was amazing.

Right now, bus drivers are cleaning the remaining buses of soot and smoke damage. The actual bus barn structure suffered some damage but was also saved from being a total loss by the sprinkler system.

Riverton schools continued to operate; all children unable to get to school because of the fire will be excused. There is no set timetable for when the buses will resume their regular routes.

Lexington, KY – Fire at thrift and antique mall held in check by sprinkler system

Lexington firefighters are trying to determine what caused a small fire at the Peddler’s Mall on New Circle Road Monday evening.  The fire started in one or two booths at the back of the building. There were no injuries and it’s not clear how much damage was sustained, said Maj. C.J. Haunz. 

The fire started after 7:30 p.m. Haunz said the mall — which has individual booths that sell antiques and other goods — had a sprinkler system that kept the fire in the back of the building. Fire crews were able to contain the fire quickly, he said.

Crews were on the scene for a few hours on Monday night. The Peddler’s Mall on East New Circle Road has more than 700 booths, according to the Peddler’s Mall Facebook page. According to the Fayette County Property Value Administrator web site, the building was built in 1964.

Milford, CT – No injuries in senior housing complex fire; Fire caused by unattended cooking

Four tenants of a housing complex in Milford have been displaced after a fire on Friday night.  Milford Fire Department says they received notification of an active fire alarm at 75 Demaio Drive around 7:30 p.m. Firefighters responded to the city-owned elderly housing complex and were notified of a working fire on the fourth floor of the structure.

The sprinkler system in the buildings had activated due to a cooking fire in a unit on the fourth floor. The sprinkler system extinguished the fire.  The tenant stated that the fire started when he stepped away from the kitchen area. He said he left the stove unattended.

There were no injuries reported from the fire.  Four tenants were displaced by the fire and will be relocated to an unaffected area of the complex. Milford housing and sprinkler crews were on the scene to begin fixing the damage.

San Bernardino, CA – Attic sprinkler holds fire at bay at downtown shoe business

A fire forced customers and employees to evacuate a downtown San Bernardino shoe business Wednesday evening.

“The facade burned with smoke extension into the building,” San Bernardino County Fire spokesman Eric Sherwin said. “The sprinkler in the attic kept the fire at bay, but still had active fire in a 60-foot section of the facade on the store front side.”

The fire was first reported shortly after 5:30 p.m. with several reports of smoke coming from the attic of Shoe City at 808 S E St.

“Shortly after the fire erupted, the sprinklers activated and the store was evacuated,” Sherwin said. “An attic fire was located and knocked down in 25 minutes.”

Fire investigators were on scene and no injuries were reported. Fire officials haven’t released the cause of the fire.

It’s unclear when the business will reopen or how much damage was caused by the blaze.

Atlanta, GA – Fire in suite area of Georgia Dome during Monster Truck rally extinguished by sprinkler system

A small grease fire in a kitchen at the Georgia Dome forced a brief evacuation during Saturday’s Monster Truck rally, according to the Atlanta Fire Department. The fire occurred in the kitchen on one of the suite levels. The evacuation happened because of the smoke.   By the time firefighters arrived, the fire was out.  The sprinkler system put out the blaze.

Racine, WI – Sprinkler system contains apartment fire after magazine fell on unattended candle

At least two tenants were displaced from the Lincoln School Apartments after a fire Thursday evening. The fire at 1130 Carlisle Avenue was reported at 6:27 p.m., according to a news release from the Racine Fire Department.  The fire was reportedly caused by a magazine falling onto a candle.  A resident was reportedly sitting in her recliner when the magazine fell from her chair onto the candle that she had sitting on a metal tray on the floor next to her.  The paper from the magazine ignited, setting the chair on fire. The woman was able to evacuate without injury, alarms notified the other residents of the building and the sprinkler system contained the fire until the Fire Department could extinguish it, according to the release.  The residents had to wait to return to their apartments until the alarm and sprinkler system were back in service.
