The fire was contained to an area with the assistance of the fire department and the building’s sprinkler system.
Damage is unknown at this time, there were several individuals outside the building after evacuation.

Fire crews responded to the scene at 320 Sugarcreek Trail, just northwest of Beaverbrook Avenue and Riverside Drive, around 3 p.m. July 23.
The call came in after the occupants of a unit at the address, who weren’t home at the time, were alerted to the fire by a home monitoring system, said Platoon Chief Gary Mosburger.
After making a forced entry into the unit through a patio door, Mosburger said firefighters located two dogs inside and managed to get them out.
he building’s sprinkler system held the fire at bay until firefighters arrived, he added.
It was later determined the blaze began when a battery pack, chewed up by the dogs, ignited the mattress it was sitting on.“[Mattresses] are basically like a petroleum-based foam, so as soon as it gets going, it can be incredibly violent… and can consume a room and an apartment very, very quickly,” Mosburger said.
The two pups have since been taken to a veterinarian, he said. “From what I’ve heard, everything seems to be fine with the dogs.”
The blaze caused mostly smoke damage — about $25,000 worth, fire officials say. That tally doesn’t include water damage left behind by the sprinklers and fire crews.
According to an AFD press release, the department was called around 9:15 a.m. to the scene of the fire at a multi-storey residential complex located in the 100 block of Mackenzie Way SW.
“Upon arrival, fire crews found a partial evacuation had taken place and those residents and their pets had safely gathered in the building’s parking lot,” the release stated.
Upon entering the apartment building, firefighters discovered a small fire was burning on an exterior deck of the apartment complex. The fire was being held in check by the residential fire sprinkler system.
Firefighters extinguished what remained of the fire and proceeded to check apartments above, below and adjacent to ensure they had not been damaged.
“Due to the timely activation of the exterior fire sprinkler system, damage was limited to the exterior deck of the apartment of origin,” the release stated.
The cause of the fire was determined to be the ignition of combustible materials that were stored close to a barbecue. Damages are estimated to be $2000.
“The AFD reminds the public to remain safe and attentive when using a barbecue,” the release stated. “Ensure that the barbecue is located in a well-ventilated area and a safe distance from combustible materials, windows and doors. Never leave a lit grill unattended. Barbecues should be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis.”
A fire has damaged a strip mall in the Airways industrial area in northeast Calgary.
Fire crews were called to the area on 30 Ave. NE around 4:20 Monday morning.
When they arrived, crews found broken glass from windows that were shattered along with water flowing from sprinklers.
A small fire was eventually found and confined to the rear of the strip mall.
Damage to nearby shops was minor and mainly resulting from water and smoke.
Right now, there are no reports of any injuries.
Calgary police say fire investigators are now trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
The site also had a fire May 24 that didn’t spread beyond a single room.
The building at 3020 Blanshard St. offers accommodation to people who were previously living in tents in Topaz Park or along a stretch of Pandora Avenue, a transition made possible after the provincial government bought the facility last month for $18.5 million.
Residents are supported by Our Place Society and the Victoria Cool Aid Society.
Atkinson said the first 911 call was received about 8:20 a.m. and crews were able to put the fire out quickly. One occupant had been in the unit but got out safely.
“It was a room-and-contents fire and it did activate the sprinkler system,” he said. “The sprinkler system did a really good job of not allowing it to spread too radically.”
Remediation in the other rooms could range from pulling up the carpet and bringing in fans to working on drywall and paint.
He said there is bound to be a fair bit of damage, “being that it was on the fourth floor and water runs downhill.”
Officials say the trouble began when heat from a cooking fire triggered the sprinkler system in one section of the Meadowland Manor apartment complex on Bay Bulls Road.
The building’s owner, Killam Properties, says it could take two days to repair water damage and ensure the building is safe before evacuated tenants can return.
Meanwhile, Canadian Red Cross volunteers have arranged emergency lodging for tenants from 13 apartments. Additionally, Killam Properties says it may temporarily relocate some tenants to vacant apartments in unaffected sections of the building.
The fire was extinguished quickly – no injuries were reported.
Firefighters in Lavington were called out to an early morning fire at the Pinnacle Pellet plant.
Lavington fire chief Marty Wright told iNFOnews.ca crews got the call 2:45 a.m. today, May 11, and were on site before 3 a.m.
Wright said the fire started in a fan chamber and was quickly doused by the automatic sprinkling system at the pellet plant.
“Pinnacle Pellet’s automated suppression system took care of most the fire for us,” Wright said. “We just got there and took care of the big fire that was in the chamber and then just dealt with hotspots throughout.”
Wright said there were no injuries and everybody is accounted for.
The fire chief said the main fan chamber was completely lost in the fire and the damage is now being accessed by the company.
In a post to Facebook, one eyewitness reported hearing a loud explosion.
Wright said 13 Lavington firefighters and nine from Coldstream responded to the fire. Crews left the scene at around 7 a.m..
According to officials, reports of smoke in the resort’s spa area prompted the call to emergency crews who found a waste paper basket fire upon arrival.
The building’s fire protection sprinkler/early detection system helped contain the fire before it could be extinguished by WKFR firefighters.
An investigation determined the small fire was started by spontaneous combustion due to the improper disposal of oil soaked rags and concluded.
It’s not being considered as suspicious.
Firefighters found smoke in the first floor hallway of the hotel and began an offensive attack. The city said the fire was under control very quickly, thanks in part to the hotel’s automatic sprinkler system that had activated and stopped the fire from spreading.
Other areas of the hotel had some minor smoke and water damage. The city said there are no damage estimates at this time.
All the people in the hotel were able to self-evacuate, and one person was assessed by paramedics on scene but did not need to go to the hospital. There were no other injuries reported.
Police confirmed that the fire was a result of arson.
A fire last night at the Sandman Inn and Suites left 65 people without a place to sleep.
Around 8:20 p.m., Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) was called to the hotel (which also has apartments), says Platoon Capt. Troy Grant.
“Arriving a couple of blocks away, we could see flames on the roof of the building,” he tells KamloopsMatters. “The fire was in the attic and going through the roof in a couple of spots.”
KFR was able to quickly knock the fire down, using hoses from the outside and a ladder truck. They did have to remove a six-foot-by-12-foot section of the roof to get to it.
No injuries were reported, but the building remained empty overnight.
“65 residents were displaced,” Grant says. “Those have been taken care of by emergency support services.”
He adds that some will likely be able to return to their homes tonight, but others won’t be so lucky. The fourth floor, where the fire took place, has apartments, he adds. Along with some smoke damage and the removed section of the roof, he says there’s extensive water damage in some units, and likely more below.
“The cause of fire was in the attic itself; it appears electrical in nature,” Grant says. “The fire was kept small by the sprinkler system — the sprinklers were on for some time.”
Because of that, the roof collapsed in one unit and is sagging in others.
While the fire was knocked down relatively quickly, Grant says KFR stayed on the scene for a couple of hours to help guests and residents move out of the building.
