Issaquah, WA – Sprinkler system activated for fire at elementary school; No injuries reported

A small fire at Issaquah’s Challenger Elementary school has forced the evacuation of students to another school.

The fire broke out in a garbage can in a bathroom around 1:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Ryan Abbott with the King County Sheriff’s Office. The flames set off the sprinkler system, causing some water damage, plus quite a bit of smoke filled the school, Abbott said.

A 5-year-old child was checked out for smoke inhalation, but was determined to be fine, Abbott said.

Meanwhile, all students were reported safe and have been moved to the gym at nearby Beaver Lake Middle School. School buses will pick up the children there, and parents can also pick up their kids from Beaver Lake.

There is no word yet what started the fire. Police warn there are road closures near the school at 25200 Klahanie Blvd. SE.

Worcester, MA – Fire on second floor of mill contained by sprinkler system

A fire in a vacant mill on Tainter Street was contained by a sprinkler system that, until mid-September, had been turned off.

The fire broke out around noon Tuesday and went to a second alarm when crews found fire on the second floor.

The city got a court order in September to force the building owner to turn on the sprinkler system in the building, which helped prevent a much bigger fire, officials said.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Delta, BC, Canada – Arson fire in police building lobby controlled with help from sprinkler system

A man has been arrested after police in Delta say he set fire to couches in the lobby of the Delta Police Public Safety Building. “Fortunately there were no injuries,” Delta PD’s Cris Leykauf says. “The man was quickly arrested and is currently in custody.

Police say the man walked into the building in North Delta around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday with a jerry can in hand, soaking the furniture with gasoline and lighting it on fire. The fire caused the building sprinkler system to go off, and the building was evacuated.

Police Chief Neil Dubord says staff responded quickly and were able to put out the flames.  “The firemen who were also in the building, heard the commotion going on into the front and came out as well and helped to extinguish the fire,” Dubord tells NEWS 1130. “One of our officers that was in the back was able to get out in the front, as well, and quickly arrest the suspect before he was able to get away from the location.

While the building is still staffed, police say it’s been closed to the public due to significant smoke, fire and water damage in the lobby.  The suspect remains in custody and will likely face charges.  In the meantime, Dubord says their building is still being repaired, and they’re hoping to re-open later this week.  You can always call 604.946.4411 if you need any non-emergency police assistance over the long weekend. The headquarters in Ladner is also open.

Charlottesville, VA – Fire at off-campus apartment building extinguished by sprinkler system

Wednesday October 3rd, 2018, at 5:28pm the Charlottesville Fire Department responded for an alarm activation at The Standard located at 853 West Main Street. The first unit was on scene in 4 minutes and 32 seconds. During the initial investigation crews discovered smoke on the 5th floor and water coming from sprinkler heads that had been activated. The sprinkler heads had been activated due to a kitchen fire which was extinguished by the sprinkler system prior to the fire department arrival. One civilian received non-life threatening injuries as a result of the kitchen fire and was transported to the hospital for further evaluation. Fourteen occupants were displaced from fire or water damage to their units and have been relocated by management to temporary housing until their units are repaired. The rapid application of water onto the fire by the sprinkler system prevented further fire damage to the interior of the structure. Three engine companies, one aerial truck company, one fire marshal and one battalion chief responded from the Charlottesville Fire Department along with one medic unit from the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad. All units cleared the scene within 2 hours. The Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating the cause at this time. The Charlottesville Fire Department would like to remind everyone that smoke detectors save lives. A free detector is available to all City residents. Call 434-970-3245 to schedule your smoke detector install.

Waco, TX – Apartment kitchen fire contained by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Waco Fire Department units arrived on the scene of an apartment fire at 2301 Woodgate Drive on Wednesday afternoon.  The fire occurred in a downstairs apartment, where crews say started in the kitchen area. The fire did not spread beyond the kitchen.  Nobody was home at the time of the fire, but there were two dogs inside. The dogs have been reported safe, but Animal Control was called to assist with them because they were reportedly aggressive toward the crews. The department says the fire was largely contained by a sprinkler system. No injuries have been reported.  The department goes on to say construction codes require sprinklers in most new apartment buildings, due to possible scenarios like this fire. They say to consider them for residential construction if you are building a house because they save lives and reduce damage.
