Waltham, MA – Fire in Costco Wholesale tire center held at bay by sprinkler system

The Costco on 2nd Avenue had to be evacuated after a car caught on fire in the garage, last Tuesday afternoon. Fire officials said there were no injuries, and crews were able to make quick work of the fire. By 3 p.m. the Costco was open for business again. Around noon a man pulled a car into the Costco garage, got out and it started smoking and ended up catching on fire, according to fire officials. “They believe it originated in the engine compartment,” said Lt. Scott Perry of the Waltham Fire Department.

Employees evacuated the garage and the shopping center building for precautionary reasons, while firefighters dealt with the fire, which generated smoke that billowed out into the parking lot. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading outside the garage. “The sprinkler did what it needed to do and kept it at bay enough to let the firefighters do their work,” said Perry. “And now there’s a little bit of clean up.”

Westbrook, ME – Sprinkler system keeps apartment fire from spreading

Crews are still investigating to find a cause of a fire in Westbrook. It happened on Bridge Street last Tuesday afternoon. Bridge Street is back open, and a few officials are on scene working with residents that are now displaced from the fire. Westbrook Fire Chief Andy Turcotte says they received the call of a fire outside of an apartment building. Chief Turcotte says it started on the second floor, making its way to the third-floor deck, and then extending to inside of the structure. Fortunately, all occupants made it out safely, and firefighters were able to knock it down fairly quickly.

Chief Turcotte says that’s all thanks to the sprinkler system inside the building that was able to get ahead of the fire before it spread any further. Fortunately, the weather was in our favor,” Turcotte said. “It’s not -32, where we had issues with water freezing. And it was perfect day our staffing as perfect we had good neighboring response. And again, this was an example of how sprinklers worked in our favor.

While there are no injuries, the chief says all residents in the building will be displaced for at least Tuesday night because of the water damage that made its way to the first floor. They’re working with Red Cross right now to make sure everyone has a place to stay. There is no word yet on the cause we’ll have more details as we receive them.

Florence, SC – Sprinkler system kept stove fire in check until fire crews arrived

One Florence apartment suffered slight fire and some water damage while 23 others in the same building escaped damage Sunday afternoon.

Howe Springs firefighters responded shortly after 1:30 p.m. to Charles Pointe Apartments to a reported kitchen fire.

A resident cooking lunch either left it unattended or it boiled over onto the stove and it caught fire, said Howe Springs Fire Chief William Dillon.

The building’s sprinkler system kept the fire in check until firefighters arrived and extinguished it, Dillon said. The building’s fire alarm system alerted every other resident in the building to evacuate.

Dillon said firefighters remained on scene to isolate the sprinkler flow to the apartment, salvage threatened content and then help remove water from the first-floor apartment before other apartments could be damaged.

Dillon said the resident will be out of their apartment for several days while repairs are made.

No injuries were reported as a result of the blaze.

Howe Springs responded three engines, a ladder truck and 20 firefighters.

After firefighters ventilated the building and ensured the air quality was safe, staff and residents were allowed back inside just before 6 p.m., the department said. Several residents were displaced due to fire and water damage and will be allowed back in their suites after they are cleaned, officials said. Rock Island, IL – Sprinkler system stops apartment kitchen fire

A Rock Island apartment building is still standing tonight because of a fire sprinkler. Rock Island Fire Marshal Greg Marty said a stove fire started on the third floor of the Sala Apartments at 2:30 today. The <fire> triggered the sprinkler system, which put out the flames before firefighters arrived. Marty said this is why every house should have a smoke detector and a sprinkler system.

“This lady’s going to get to stay in her own apartment tonight,” Marty said. “She’ll get to sleep in her own bed. You know, the cleanup is going to be with a mop and a bucket instead of potentially millions of dollars worth of damage and potentially other lives lost.” Marty said apartments have been required to have sprinklers for years. The City of Rock Island just made it mandatory that all new homes be built with sprinklers last year. It is the only Quad City to do so.

EARLIER VERSION: Three fire engines are outside the Sala apartment building in downtown Rock Island. A battalion chief says there was a small stove fire in a unit on the third floor, but it was contained by the sprinkler system. No injuries reported so far.
