Two small fires set by arsonist controled by sprinkler system (Palmetto, GA)

A Palmetto man has been arrested for setting two small fires at the Kedron Fieldhouse and Aquatic Center overnight, police said. Police said the fires appear to have been started with some sort of ignitable liquid, and an unidentified liquid also had been poured on several desks in the office area. But the fires set off the sprinkler system in the gymnasium.

In less than five minutes, sprinklers in the ground floor center apartment had activated and doused the fire. Crews extinguished the balance of the fire and removed the sofa from the apartment. The residents, a family with two young children, were not home at the time of the blaze, but the other residents in the complex were able to return to their apartments. “The automatic fire sprinkler system did its job, providing quick notification of the fire to the residents in the adjacent apartments, containing the fire to the living room and preventing the fire from spreading to other apartments in the building,” stated Sedona Fire District Fire Marshal Gary Johnson.

Firefighters received the alarm around 3:30 a.m. On their arrival, they found a small pile of debris, left over from the previous day, had caught fire. A sprinkler prevented a fire from spreading beyond the kitchen of a home in the Michelle Manor Apartments in Green Valley on Monday evening. The resident had been heating oil in a cast iron skillet when she went outside to check on the grill and visit with friends, according to the Green Valley Fire District. She returned to find the pan on fire and the flames too intense to extinguish. “Fires like this are a great example of how quickly a fire can be extinguished and how major loss of property or life prevented by sprinklers,” GVFD Operations Chief Chuck Wunder said.

Apartment fire contained by sprinkler system (Mesa, AZ)

An apartment was saved after its sprinkler system kicked in and extinguished a fire in a laundry basket in a bathroom. The activated sprinkler was able to keep the fire contained in the bathroom and prevent it from spreading to the rest of the apartment or neighboring units. Mesa Fire says that this is the third fire in the past month that was managed in the early stages by an active sprinkler system.

The accidental discharge of a flare gun sparked a fire Tuesday afternoon inside The Retreat at McEver Apartments. “The sprinkler system in the building had all but extinguished the fire upon the arrival of the fire department,” said Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada. He said no other apartment units were damaged by the blaze and no injuries were reported.
