Riverhead firefighters responded to the alarm at about 2:40 p.m. and quickly contained and stopped the fire in the back room of the Charlotte Russe store in Tanger 2. The fire triggered the store’s sprinkler system. The Riverhead fire marshal was called to investigate the origin and cause of the fire. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

The fire started around 9:30 a.m. when an extension cord malfunctioned at The Home Depot at 2300 Harbor Blvd., according to authorities. When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the store’s garden center and forced their way in. A crew of about 17 quickly extinguished the flames, which had been held in check by a sprinkler system, according to the Fire Department. The fire caused about $1,000 in damage.

Retail, Shopping Mall Sprinkler system contains blaze in early morning mall fire (North Riverside, IL) November 14, 2014 viking210 A fire ignited inside the loading dock area of the Carson Pirie Scott department store at the North Riverside Park Mall early Wednesday, sending smoke throughout the store and into the main area of the mall. Fire damage was contained to the loading dock area, which is located on the south side of the store, but Fire Chief Bran Basek said that the ground floor area of Carson’s was “fully charged” with smoke when firefighter arrived shortly after the alarm call came in at about 3:50 a.m. Once the fire was located, it took about 15 to 20 minutes to extinguish the fire, Basek said. The store’s fire sprinkler system was able to keep the fire, which was centered on merchandise stored on racks inside the loading dock, from spreading.

The fire, which broke out near the aisle containing paper towels and toilet paper, took approximately 45 minutes to contain, he said. Perry said the cause of the fire was unknown as of Wednesday morning. The case is under investigation, the chief said. “The fire protection system in the building worked like it was supposed to,” he said. “It worked perfectly.”

The fire started in one of the store’s aisles about 9 p.m. and the store’s sprinkler system prevented it from spreading, a Mesa Fire Department spokesman said. All customers were evacuated safely from the store near Brown Road and Mesa Drive, the spokesman said.
