Laundry room fire suppressed by sprinklers at restaurant (Newark, OH)

A cook called 911 shortly before 9 a.m. after smelling smoke from the laundry room. The fire, which was doused by the building’s sprinkler system, was contained to the dryer, Newark firefighter Kelly Smith said. The restaurant opened at noon, only an hour later than scheduled.

Alachua County Fire Marshal Mark Smith said the fire was caused by a pot with grease that had been put on a range to cool. The fire activated a sprinkler system, which kept the fire from causing more damage, Smith said. The fire was contained to the kitchen area. “If the sprinkler system hadn’t been installed, things would have been a lot worse,” Smith said.

Fire Inspector Rick Campos says the fire was caused by an improperly disposed of match. The bar was not open at the time. Campos says owner Ron Tegtmeier lit a candle in his office and threw the match away in the garbage can, which later started on fire.Campos says the fire was contained to the office because Uncle Ron’s had a sprinkler system installed.

McGrath’s Fish House was evacuated just before noon after a small kitchen fire broke out in one of the vents above a stove, Medford Fire and Rescue officials said. The fire was quickly extinguished by a nearby sprinkler head, but patrons were evacuated as a precaution while fire officials inspected.

The fire was caused by burning grease on the stove. The restaurant is one occupant of the building, a two-story structure that has several tenants. The fire did not spread to any other tenants.

Women fell asleep while smoking a cigarette catching the mattress on fire. The woman woke up and ran out of the room. The fire was doused by an automatic sprinkler.Firefighters said they evacuated the second floor but had allowed guests to go back in their rooms. No injuries were reported.
