Ridgeland, MS – Sprinklers activate in hotel grease fire; Guests safely evacuated

Some 70 people were forced from an Extended Stay Hotel on Ridgewood Road Monday night when fire broke out.

Assistant Ridgeland Fire Chief Allen McCluer told WLBT-TV that a grease fire activated the sprinkler system.

McCluer described charring on the wall, a little fire damage and about 3 inches of water in the room where the fire started.

Much of the water also drained from the second floor down to the first floor, WLBT reported.

Crews will be working throughout the night to check electrical systems, the sprinkler system and to clean up the water and fire damage.

Evacuees are being put up at other area hotels.

Lincoln, NE – Fire at Holiday Inn Express held in check by sprinkler system

Fire crews responded to a fire at the Holiday Inn Express near 12th and W. Commerce Way just before 4 a.m. Firefighters say the fire started in a room on the second floor. The fire was contained to that room thanks to hotel sprinklers.

“We did have some concerns initially because of the concentration of smoke that was reported to us that we may have something larger then it turned out to be but thankfully because of the sprinkler system in this structure it did assist us in holding the fire in check,” says Battalion Chief Leo Benes. “Folks are concerned about getting to their plane flights out of this city so we’re trying to assist them to get their personal belongings and getting their business done here at the hotel.”

Heavy smoke was reported throughout the building which had to be evacuated. The occupant of the room was taken to the hospital but the extent of their injuries is unknown.

Meridian, MS – Sprinkler system helps save Outback Steakhouse

An automatic sprinkler system apparently did enough to help save Meridian from losing its Outback Steakhouse.  Meridian Fire Chief Anthony Clayton said Tuesday that the sprinkler system did its job well enough to aid the arrival of the Meridian Fire Department, which extinguished the Monday afternoon fire at the steakhouse located at the Meridian Crossroads.

“Had it not been for the automatic sprinkler system, the building would have burned up,” Clayton said.  Clayton said his investigative team concluded the fire was caused by corrosion in its gas line.

“It had been caused from the cleaning solvents used,” he said. “The solvents had corroded the line and it failed. It ignited. Because the automatic sprinkler system activated, it kept the damage to a minimum. It allowed us time to get there and put it out.”

Clayton said the restaurant suffered smoke damage and could be reopened in a couple of days.

San Antonio, TX – Restaurant fire in mixed-use residential building suppressed by sprinkler system

San Antonio fire officials responded to the fire just after 2 a.m. at the Saltgrass Steakhouse on River Street near E. Crockett and N. Presa streets. The restaurant’s sprinkler system kept the fire contained and damage was limited to the kitchen.

Mankato, MN – Sprinkler system activates to help control lunch-time restaurant fire

Investigators have determined the cause of Wednesday’s fire at Asiana Buffet in Mankato. Fire officials say the fire originated in a wok in the kitchen. The fire then spread to the restaurants ceiling. The fire started over the noon hour and officials say firefighters were notified of the fire by a sprinkler alarm. When firefighters arrived, lunch-hour diners and staff were still in the restaurant, most unaware that a fire was spreading in the ceiling and rafters. Staff was apparently trying to fight the fire and it eventually triggered a sprinkler system that alerted the fire department. Damages are estimated at $1.75 million. There were no injuries.

Pierre, SD – Hotel boiler room fire extinguished by sprinkler system

The Pierre Fire Department spent about an hour at the Clubhouse Inn and Suites early this morning after fire alarms sounded in the building around 1:30 a.m.  Pierre Fire Chief Ian Paul says when firefighters arrived at the hotel, light smoke was noted in a boiler room near the pool area on the building’s main floor.

Paul says a small fire had occurred and that produced enough heat to trip the fire sprinkler suppression system.  Paul credits the system with putting the fire out before it spread.  Guests were temporarily evacuated into the hotel’s lobby until it was determined the fire was completely extinguished.

Paul says he doesn’t have an estimate of damage to the boiler and says water damage from the sprinkler system was confined to the area near the fire and was not extensive.  Firefighters remained at the hotel for a time to make sure the fire was completely out.  As for the cause, Paul says it appears to have been an electrical malfunction in the unit, but says the establishment’s insurance company will investigate further.

Las Vegas, NV – Sprinkler system douses overnight fire at downtown bar

An automatic sprinkler helped prevent an overnight fire from spreading at a downtown bar, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said. Fire dispatchers were notified at 3:16 a.m. today that the water-flow alarm for the fire sprinkler system activated at Backstage Bar & Billiards, 601 Fremont St., fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Firefighters forced their way into the three-story building and found clothing and other items too close to a water heater had caught fire, he said. The sprinkler had already doused the fire, he said. Damage was estimated at $5,000, but the blaze could have done substantial damage without the sprinkler system, Szymanski said.
