Saint John’s, NL, Canada – Pizzeria fire in building with apartments above is extinguished by sprinkler system

A Saint John restaurant remains closed after it was damaged by fire early Saturday morning. Crews from the Saint John fire department responded to call at Pomodori Pizzeria at 34 Canterbury Street, located in the city’s uptown.  There are apartments upstairs in the three-storey structure.  Platoon Chief Barry Oickle said the first crew could not locate the initial source of the fire. With the help of another crew, they searched all three floors of the building to make sure all tenants had been evacuated.  After further investigation, the source of the fire was found inside the restaurant located on the ground floor. Access was gained from an adjoining business.  Oickle said there had been a small fire that was extinguished by the sprinkler system in the kitchen. “But it also caused some smoke and water damage,” he said. Fire crews worked to clear the smoke from the building. Tenants were allowed to return to their apartments after about two hours. “The cause has not yet been determined but it does not seem to be suspicious in nature,” Oickle said.

Fresno, CA – Restaurant fire knocked down by sprinkler system

A popular Northeast Fresno is closed until repairs can be made after the fire broke out on Sunday.

Patrons of Five Restaurant at Champlain and Perrin were saddened to see one of their favorite spots to eat and drink was forced to shut down.

The fire erupted two hours before it was going to open. It started near the pizza oven and spread into the attic.

Smoke filled the entire building but without a sprinkler system in place, the outcome would have been much worse.

Fresno City Battalion Chief Bob Van Tassel explained, “I would figure that particular building probably would have burned to the ground.”

Van Tassel added if the sprinklers didn’t knock down the flames, the fire would’ve threatened neighboring buildings. Still, the smoke and water damage was extensive.

Van Tassel said, “I think the early estimates around $300,000 although there’s probably a substantial loss I’m sure to the business. As you’re aware, it’s a well-established business in the community.”

In a message posted on Facebook, owners Pat and Marina LaRocca said, “On behalf of our FIVE family, we would like to thank our friends, family, and community for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. We are doing everything necessary to speed up the process of reopening our family restaurant.”

Five Restaurant was preparing for another busy day.

Operations Manager Nicole Fitzgerald said it was just controlled in the kitchen when we had to evacuate. It definitely surpassed the kitchen.”

Four employees were evaluated for smoke inhalation at the scene. One was taken to the hospital to be checked.

A Sunday morning fire damaged a Culver’s restaurant.  At 2:28 a.m. Sunday, the Sturgis Fire Department was dispatched to Culver’s at 830 S. Centreville Road for a report of smoke in the building. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found the building full of smoke from an unknown origin.  After entering the restaurant and investigating, firefighters found a clothes dryer burning in the rear of the restaurant. The fire had been contained to only the dryer by a working sprinkler head.

The remaining fire was put out and the washer/dryer unit was removed from the building.  The building sustained minor smoke damage and no structural damage. However, there was a large amount of water from the activated sprinkler head and due to water in the electric panels the main power meter to the building had to be turned off.

Just less than 30 firefighters were called to the scene, including volunteers from Station 4 in Chippawa. “We had Station 6, Crowland, to come in to cover the rest of the city while firefighters were at the hotel,” Boutilier added. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. No damage estimate was available but the Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the incident.
