South Lake Tahoe, CA – Kitchen fire kept in check by sprinkler system until fire crews arrived

Hunan Garden on Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe is closed after a fire broke out in the kitchen’s grease shoot, spreading to the stove and exhaust vent.

At 11:09 p.m. on January 18, crews from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue arrived at the restaurant and saw flames shooting out of the vents on the roof. Not knowing the extent of the fire they called in Lake Valley Fire and Tahoe Douglas Fire to assist.

The hood system worked and kept the fire in check until the crews could extinguish the fire.

On Saturday morning, the building and health departments were on the scene with Battalion Chief Karl Koeppen to evaluate the damage. The restaurant will be closed until the stove and sprinkler system are back in service, clean-up of the fire aftermath is completed and the building can be re-inspected.

Queensbury, NY – Sprinkler system puts out fire at resort hotel and indoor water park

Firefighters responded to a smoky fire Tuesday night at the Great Escape Lodge, but the hotel was closed to guests at the time and no injuries or major damage was reported. The fire was spotted around 7 p.m. and started in the bar area of the Tall Tales Tavern restaurant in the lodge, according to Queensbury Central Fire Chief Richard Jones. Minor damage was reported.

“The sprinkler system put the fire out,” he said. A spokeswoman for Great Escape owner Six Flags said Wednesday that the fire was traced to spontaneous combustion, as rags and floor stain were placed in a small plastic trash container ignited, and the lodge’s sprinkler system was triggered and knocked it down.

Firefighters from around the region responded as mutual aid and used industrial fans to ventilate the building, Warren County Fire Coordinator Brian LaFlure said. “There was quite a bit of smoke,” LaFlure said.

LaFlure referred comment to Jones for details as to the investigation, but he could not be reached Wednesday morning. Six Flags Great Escape President Eric Gilbert said Tuesday night that there were no guests in the hotel at the time, but two staff members who were in the building safely evacuated.

Company spokeswoman Brittany Gillespie said Wednesday morning that the fire will not keep the lodge from re-opening Wednesday afternoon as planned. The restaurant suffered “minimal” damage, but it was unclear whether it would be open for guests on Wednesday. The lodge was not open Tuesday night because it closes some weekdays during the winter for routine maintenance, Gillespie said.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA – Sprinkler system activates in hotel fire; Assists firefighters in extinguishing blaze

A number of hotel guests had to be evacuated after a fire broke out at Four Points by Sheraton hotel, Tuesday night. Firefighters responded to the reported fire at the Four Points by Sheraton in the 11900 block of Foothill Boulevard around 9:55 PM. Units arriving on scene found a small fire in a third-floor room and quickly extinguished it. The flames were enough to activate the building’s sprinkler system. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Poway, CA – Grease fire at Panda Express extinguished by sprinkler system

A small grease fire Wednesday morning at a Poway restaurant caused a minor injury and resulted in the closure of the business.

Firefighters were called to Panda Express, 13624 Poway Road about 11:35 a.m. and found that a sprinkler had put the fire out. An employee suffered a minor hand burn but declined to be transported for medical attention, according to Mark Sanchez, the city’s director of safety services.

The restaurant will be closed until its reopening is authorized by the county health department, Sanchez said.

Baton Rouge, LA – Grease fire at restaurant extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Baton Rouge firefighters responded to a kitchen fire at the Walk On’s on Burbank.

The Fire department got the call around 6 p.m. Sunday night. Authorities immediately evacuated the restaurant luckily the sprinkler system put the fire out.

The fire was ignited by grease in the kitchen, damages were minimal and no injuries reported.

The restaurant says they aim to be back in business tomorrow pending inspection of suppression systems.

Ocean City, MD – Restaurant fire extinguished by sprinkler system and fast acting employee

An Ocean City restaurant was saved from serious fire damage due to fire sprinklers and an employee using a fire extinguisher. The Ocean City Fire Department was called to respond to a reported building fire at Liquid Assets Restaurant on 94th Street just before 4:30 PM Tuesday.  When firefighters arrived, they found the building had been evacuated. As they entered the building, they found one single fire sprinkler that was actively flowing water near the propane oven, along with light smoke conditions and evidence of a fire that had been extinguished by the sprinkler system and an employee using a Class K fire extinguisher.

“The quick actions of the staff at Liquid Assets and the fire sprinkler system saved lives and property at Liquid Assets. This is one example why the Office of the Fire Marshal maintains our Fire Protection Quality Assurance Program, to ensure all fire protection systems work as intended during an emergency,” said Fire Marshal David W. Hartley.  An on-scene investigation by the O.C. Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire started as a result of a propane appliance malfunction. The fire has been ruled accidental.

Springfield, OR – Fire at Quality Inn and Suites controlled with help from sprinkler system

Guests at the Quality Inn and Suites in the Gateway area of Springfield were forced to evacuate due to a fire Monday night. Eugene Springfield Fire said they received a call at about 9 p.m. about an attic fire at the hotel. “At this point we’re in the mode of assisting the property owner and property management to restore as much as possible to a working functional level,” Battalion Chief Chris Paskett said at the scene. Firefighters say the building also has water damage from the sprinkler system down to the parts of the hotel’s first level. The cause of the fire is unclear.

Montreal, QC, Canada – Arson fire at pizzeria extinguished by sprinkler system

When eating out at a pizzeria in Montreal you can typically expect certain things to happen. First, you get your giant pizza pie and sit down at a diner-like table. Then, you can totally expect to get some of the sauce on at least one article of clothing.

Third, a Molotov cocktail hurls through the window and sets the restaurant on fire.

That last point may seem bizarre, but it’s exactly what’s been happening in pizza shops in the city. 

Around 3:30AM this morning one of the bombs was thrownthrough a window at California Pizza, in the Côte des Neiges neighbourhood. Firefighters arrived to find the flames dying out, thanks to the sprinkler system in the restaurant.

This isn’t the first time this has happened, unfortunately. In fact, over the past two weeks three known fires have been started by an arsonist in the city, according to CTV. They remain on the loose, so who knows what pizza shop they’ll be targeting next.

Thankfully, however, no one has been injured.

Not-so-surprisingly, Montreal actually has a bit of a problem with people setting things on fire. Just so you get an idea of how bad it is, below is a visual aid of firebombings in the city since 2009.

So, needless to say, we have a lot of arsonists running around the city. Montreal’s arson squad will be meeting with California Pizza today to examine security footage and attempt to identify who keeps setting pizzerias on fire.

So far, there’s no apparent motive.

Until the perpetrators are caught, you might want to stick with ordering delivery.

Manhattan, KS – Laundry fire at Hilton Garden Inn held in check by automatic sprinkler system; No injuries

Manhattan fire crews responded to a fire at Hilton Garden Inn early Saturday morning at 410 S. Third St., at about 6:40 a.m. and found a fire in the laundry room. The blaze started accidentally in a commercial dryer unit, according to a report from the fire department. The building’s sprinkler system had activated and kept it contained.  General manager Brad Everett said the guests were evacuated safely, and no one was injured. Sixteen firefighters responded on six fire vehicles, with the last units clearing at around 8:00 am.
