Cumming, GA – Sprinkler system activated for restaurant fire on Mother’s Day

Authorities say several dozens of people, including patrons and employees, had to evacuate from a popular Korean restaurant on Mother’s Day, after an outside fire.

Forsyth County Division Fire Chief Jason Shivers said damage was significantly limited thanks to all systems working properly and keeping an external fire at Q Korean Steakhouse from causing any significant damage inside.

Those systems included smoke alarms and the sprinkler system which both activated around 6:45 p.m. when the fire started.

However, they also included a third element – an off-duty Alpharetta firefighter who immediately used three dry chemical fire extinguishers to help control the flames until local crews could arrive.

At this point, the fire’s cause is considered accidental, however, the specific cause hasn’t yet been determined. It’s unclear how long, at this point, repairs will take or when the restaurant intends to reopen.

San Antonio, TX – Sprinkler system activated for fire at sandwich shop; No injuries reported

A Jersey Mike’s Subs sandwich shop on the West Side sustained some damage Thursday morning following a fire in the kitchen.

The San Antonio Fire Department said the call came in after 7 a.m. at the restaurant in the 8600 block of State Highway 151, not far from Ingram Road.

A fire started on the stove but the sprinkler system prevented the flames from spreading.

One employee was inside the business at the time and recorded the fire to show it to firefighters, a battalion chief at the scene said.

She was able to escape without injury.

Firefighters knocked down the flames and no neighboring businesses were affected.

The battalion chief said the damage is estimated to be a maximum of $10,000.

The damage from the flames and sprinkler system was minimal, he said.

Portland, OR – Sprinkler system activated for cooking fire at hotel

Smoke alarms were blaring and water was flowing after one man’s cooking led to a small fire overnight.

Fire crews were called out to the Larkspur Landing Suite Hotel in Hillsboro just after 1:30 a.m. Once they arrived, firefighters saw one hotel room’s fire sprinklers were running and smoke was filling the corridor. While crews went to work, the hotel’s occupants were told to shelter in place.

Firefighters reached the hotel room the water and smoke were coming from to find a man trying to extinguish a fire in the room’s kitchen area. The fire itself was extinguished and never reached any other rooms — but water from the sprinklers had flowed into the hallway and several other rooms.

Crews turned off the water flow then used a water vacuum to clean up the affected areas.

The man did suffer some minor burns to his hands and legs, but he denied medical service. No other occupants were injured, but some were relocated to other rooms.

An investigation determined the cause of the fire was unattended cooking. Remember to always be present while cooking and to keep things that can burn away from stovetops.

Jacksonville, TX – Sprinkler system activated for fire at Holiday Inn Express

A South Jacksonville hotel remained closed Monday while assessing damage caused by a weekend fire.

Firefighters were called at 1:47 p.m. Sunday to Holiday Inn Express Hotel at 2501 Holiday Lane.

South Jacksonville Fire Chief Rich Evans Jr. said the initial call was for an automatic fire alarm but, while en route, firefighters were notified of a water flow alarm, which was an indication the sprinkler system had been activated.

Upon arrival, they found heavy smoke on the second floor coming from Room 218.

“The biggest brunt of the fire was extinguished by the sprinkler system,” Evans said.

Although the fire was isolated to the room, there was moderate smoke damage and extensive water damage to the hotel. A damage estimate has not been determined.

Evans believes the fire started in an air conditioner.

“The origin of the fire came from that air-conditioner unit and was contained in that area,” he said. “There was no other source besides that air conditioner.”

About six or seven rooms were booked at the time. Everyone was able to get out when the alarms sounded, Evans said.

San Rafael, CA – Arson fire at restaurant extinguished by sprinkler system

An arson investigation is underway after a San Rafael restaurant was set on fire Tuesday night, fire officials said Friday.

Fire crews responded at about 11 p.m. to a commercial building on Bellam Boulevard, in which a restaurant is located.

Firefighters discovered that someone broke into the restaurant and spread flammable liquid before lighting it.

The fire triggered the sprinkler system, which put out the fire before a lot of fire damage was done, according to fire officials.

Video surveillance captured at least one image of someone setting the fire, fire officials said.

Santa Barbara, CA – Sprinkler system kept fire in check at sushi restaurant; No injuries reported

Firefighters doused an early morning kitchen fire at Sushi Tyme restaurant in downtown Santa Barbara on Thursday, according to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.

Crews were dispatched at about 2:50 a.m. to the restaurant at 819 State St. for reports of fire alarms ringing, Capt. George Martinez told Noozhawk.

First-arriving crews found the restaurant filled with smoke and fire sprinklers going off, Martinez said, and additional firefighters were dispatched.

Firefighters pulled a hose to the front door of the structure and forced entry into the business, where crews discovered a small fire in the kitchen, Martinez said.

The fire sprinklers were able to douse most of the flames, Martinez said, adding that they prevent fire damage to most of the business.

No injuries were reported.

Three engine companies, a truck company, and a battalion chief were deployed to the scene.

The fire was determined to be accidental in nature, according to fire Engineer Kevin Corbett.

The restaurant will be closed until repairs can be made, Corbett said.

Airdrie, AB, Canada – Motel kitchen fire quickly extinguished by overhead sprinkler system; No Injuries reported

The Airdrie Fire Department responded to a structure fire on April 4 after a pot containing cooking oil overheated and ignited on a stovetop at the Motel 6 in Airdrie.

Airdrie Fire Department members responded to a structure fire on April 4, after a pot containing cooking oil overheated and ignited on a stovetop at the local Motel 6.

The fire was quickly extinguished by the building overhead sprinkler system, according to a news release from the City of Airdrie, but damages to the structure and contents have been estimated at $50,000.

The fire occurred in a main level guest room, the City’s release stated, where fire crews found light, grey smoke and water covering the main floor when they entered the building.

Once the fire had been fully extinguished by the sprinkler system, salvage and cleanup efforts were started by the thirteen firefighters on scene.

All motel staff and guests had safely evacuated to the parking area by the time that fire crews arrived on scene, and there were no injuries to report.

In a public safety announcement after the fire, the City reminded residents to be cautious while cooking, as kitchens remain one of the leading sources of fires in the home.

“Never leave the stove or oven unattended when in use,” the PSA stated. “When cooking with oil it is advised that you use a proper appliance designed for deep frying. Ensure that you have residential fire extinguisher which is easily accessible in your kitchen.”

Crest Hill, IL – Sprinkler systems activated for fire at inn; no Injuries reported

Less than four months after the Crest Hill Inn on Plainfield Road was the scene of a deadly stabbing in one of the rooms, a fire broke out late Tuesday afternoon.

Around 3:50 p.m., trucks and engines from the Lockport Township Fire Protection District rolled up to 2109 Plainfield Road to find smoke coming out of one of the hotel room windows.

The sprinkler heads activated, and this kept the fire in check, according to deputy fire chief Frank Blaskey. Firefighters ran a hose line into the hotel to quickly extinguish the remaining fire, he said.

“Fire damage was confined to the room of origin, but water damage left several rooms unable to be occupied,” Blaskey said. “There were no injuries reported and all occupants safely evacuated their rooms.”

Other areas of the Crest Hill Inn can remain occupied, the fire department said. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Lockport Fire Investigators but it appears to be accidental in nature, Blaskey’s news release stated.
