Apartment fire squelched by sprinkler system (Kansas City, MO)

A high rise apartment building reported a fire on the morning of Monday, March 3. Initial reports indicated that some of the residents may have to be evacuated residents on one of the floors, but the fire sprinkler system in the building eliminated the fire.

A cooking fire erupted in an apartment unit around 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 20. The smoke alarm went off, alerting the residents, and the sprinkler activated, extinguishing the fire. 

 

Fire Chief David Hall said of the fire, “It’s one of those that would have been a serious fire had it not had a fire sprinkler in it – and a working smoke alarm.”

A fire in a seventh floor apartment is being investigated, while the suppression of the fire is being credited to the unit’s fire sprinkler system. 

Keith Stammer, the director of emergency management, said, “This is a case where the sprinkler system did its job and knocked that fire down right away.”

The fire, which began at 7:15 p.m. on September 15, was completely extinguished by 7:30 p.m.

Fire crews responded to an emergency fire call at a bowling alley overnight on September 2. The fire, which began in the kitchen, was almost completely eliminated by the business’ fire sprinkler system. No injuries were reported, and investigators are determining the cause of the fire.

Sprinkler system extinguishes fire at amusement park (St. Louis, MO)

A fire began at a food card in a Six Flags amusement park the morning of August 9. The park’s fire sprinkler system suppressed the fire, and the responding fire crews report that the cause of the fire is still under investigation. There were no injuries reported, and the park did not have to shut down as a result of the fire.

Careless smoking is being blamed for a apartment fire in St. Charles. The fire broke out about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Sprinklers activated and kept the fire under control until firefighters arrived. Everyone in the building was evacuated safely.

“This is a clear example of how sprinkler systems can help save property,” said Sullivan fire chief, Rich White, following an early morning fire at Sullivan Precision Metal Finishing. “The sprinkler system inside the manufacturing plant had contained the fire to the specific area. Our firefighters were able to finish extinguishing the fire and then provided overhaul/cleanup of the area, along with checking for any fire extensions.”

A sprinkler system extinguished a fire Saturday at an apartment complex in Republic that suffered major fire damage two years ago.  Republic city officials required the sprinkler system to be installed after the first fire in 2010 that caused  $600,000 in damage.  The fire on Saturday started on the deck of unit H-6 after someone left smoking materials unattended.  “This time we were lucky,” Compton said. “The sprinkler system put it out.”

The fire sprinklers in the building turned on in the smoke and fire, and controlled the blaze until firefighters took over. “This could have been quite a catastrophe had the fire alarm system not activated, and had the sprinkler system not controlled the fire until our arrival,” said Monarch Fire Marshal Roger Herin.
