Sprinkler quells fire at Mugs Coffee Lounge:

Mugs Coffee Lounge, 261 S. College Ave., is open after a fire in the basement was extinguished Tuesday morning.  The cause of the fire that destroyed a fake plant, caused light smoke damage and activated Mugs’ fire sprinkler system around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday is still under investigation. The cost of damage is estimated at $1,000, according to Poudre Fire Authority spokesman Patrick Love.

“One fire sprinkler saved a huge amount of potential damage,” Love said. “This particular incident could have had extremely devastating effects not only on this building, but there are also numerous businesses nearby.”

Charleston, SC – Fire sprinkler controls downtown apartment fire

The Charleston Fire Department responded to an automatic fire alarm on Market Street this morning at 3:42 a.m.  Fire officials say there was smoke coming from the Canterbury East building from the 4th floor hallway. Fire department officials say the couch fire was contained by the fire sprinkler head in the resident’s apartment building. The damage from the fire was limited to the sofa and the resident was taken to safety.  The specific cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Gloucester, MA – Fire in freezer at seafood company extinguished by sprinkler system

A Gloucester firefighter sustained what the department termed a minor injury when crews responded to a fire within a freezer at the former Good Harbor seafood location within the Blackburn Industrial Park at around 2:15 p.m. Thursday.

Chief Eric Smith said a piece of equipment fell on the firefighter’s hand and he was brought to Addison Gilbert Hospital for evaluation. The small blaze was contained within the freezer, Smith said, and a sprinkler discharged and extinguished the flame.

“The sprinkler kept it under control,” he said.  The crew was still on scene as of 5 p.m. Smith said firefighters were disassembling the freezer to make sure no flames remained inside.

South Plainfield, NJ – Fire at plastics manufacturer controlled with help from sprinkler system

Veerag Mehta, an official with Polymer Dynamix, said that a dust collector outside of the building caught fire this morning, which caused an explosion through ventilation ducts.  Nobody was seriously hurt, but several people had ringing in their ears and they’re being checked for concussions, Mehta said.

The company does not know why the dust collector caught fire and exploded. The explosion — limited, because of sprinkler systems in the ducts — sent a plume of dust through part of the building, covering several workers, Mehta said.

“Knock on wood, everyone seems to be OK,” Mehta said.

Providence, RI – Sprinklers activated properly during Brown University locker room fire

During Thursday’s electrical fire in the men’s track and field locker room in the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center, all fire prevention measures functioned properly, said Stephen Maiorisi, vice president of facilities management. Though several of the athletes present at the time of the fire observed that the sprinkler system did not immediately activate, Stephen Morin, director of environmental health and safety, wrote in an email to The Herald that the heat-activated sprinkler heads did respond to the fire.

The fire was “10 or 15 feet away” from the heat detector, said Luke Muzikowski ’17, a member of the team who was present at the time of the fire. Both the detector and the sprinklers are activated when the room reaches a certain temperature, Devlin said, adding that the alarm and sprinkler systems were therefore not at the threshold temperature to activate the alarm by the time the runners left the locker room and the building was evacuated.

“It worked exactly the way it was supposed to,” Maiorisi said.

Richlands, NC – Fire at lawn and garden center contained by sprinklers

Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire at a Richlands business early this morning. A trash truck driver noticed smoke coming from the Great Outdoors Lawn and Garden Center on East Franck Street just before 6:00 a.m. Onslow County EMS Director Norm Bryson says fortunately the sprinkler system activated and kept the actual fire contained to the office and bathroom area.

Waldorf, MD – Single sprinkler head douses flames at senior apartment building

The Maryland State Fire Marshall determined that carelessly discarded smoking materials caused a fire at Astor Senior Apartments, 3605 Moses Way, Waldorf at around 12:31 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19.

According to Deputy Fire Marshal John Nelson, a sprinkler system in the apartment was activated and the fire was out by the time 40 volunteer firefighters from Waldorf, La Plata, Bryans Road, Hughesville, Accokeek, Baden and Bel Alton arrived on the scene.

Firefighters discovered smoke on the second floor of the apartment building with an activated fire alarm and sprinkler system. A single sprinkler head activated in Apartment 223, extinguishing the fire, which originated in the bedroom.

Albany, NY – Fire sprinkler activates to control fire at University of Albany

Husted Hall on the University at Albany’s downtown campus, was closed through Wednesday evening after a small fire at about 1:30 p.m., according to an advisory sent to students.

University police said a chair Room B-008 was found on fire but no other damage was reported. At 4:40 p.m., another chair in the same room was set on fire, causing the building’s sprinkler systems to activate, according to the advisory.

Council Bluffs, IA – Sprinkler extinguishes intentionally set fire at high school

A small fire briefly disrupted activities Tuesday afternoon at Abraham Lincoln High School.  Around 12:15 p.m., someone set fire to a football tackling dummy on a balcony in the school fieldhouse, according to Council Bluffs Fire Marshal Larry Wohlers.  The fire activated a sprinkler head about 20 feet above the fire, which distributed water to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters arrived shortly after the activation.  No one was injured.
