Suffolk, VA – Apartment kitchen fire extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Suffolk Fire and Rescue responded to the scene of an apartment fire on Sunday morning.

Emergency Communications received the 911 was around 2:30 a.m. for a fire in the 100 block of West Washington Street at The Lofts at Oce Eleven apartment building. According to Battalion Chief William Kessinger, on the scene, firefighters didn’t see a fire.

Fire crews entered the building and found a small fire in a kitchen area of one of the apartments. The fire was out before firefighters arrived because of the apartment building’s sprinkler system.

The fire was considered under control by 3:52 a.m.

Five adults and one infant were displaced due to the fire, and water damage to the downstairs apartment. The American Red Cross will be providing assistance.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and remains under investigation.

Chesapeake, VA – Three-story apartment fire extinguished by sprinkler system

An apartment fire displaced seven residents Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Firefighters were called to Adalay Bay apartments at 100 Sabal Palm Lane at 4:19 p.m., Lt. Anthony Barakat, assistant fire marshal, wrote in a news release.

Firefighters arrived at 4:24 p.m. and found a three-story apartment building with smoke coming from the back, Barakat said. They made sure the building was evacuated and quickly accessed the third-floor apartment where the fire started, he said.

The sprinkler system activated and extinguished the fire. Firefighters shut down the sprinkler system so no other units would be damaged, Barakat said.

He said the fire was cooking-related and no one was hurt.

According to Barakat, the third-floor unit suffered fire and water damage. The two units below also had water damage. Residents can’t stay in the units because water got into the electrical system and the electricity was turned off.

“Once there’s no power, we can’t allow anyone to stay there,” he said.

Adalay Bay management is helping those displaced by the fire, Barakat said.

Suffolk, VA – Early morning fire at peanut processing facility extinguished with help from sprinkler system

Birdsong Peanuts processing plant on Factory Street in Suffolk caught fire Monday morning.  According to a news release from the Suffolk Fire Department, crews were called to the 300 block of Factory Street around 5:10 a.m. after receiving reports of a fire at Birdsong Peanuts. When crews arrived there were no visible signs of smoke or fire from the outside, but after a physical inspection of the property, firefighters found heavy smoke and fire on the 7th floor of the facility.  Crews used ladder trucks and the help of a sprinkler system to extinguish the fire.  Seven employees were evacuated from the building and no one was injured.

Suffolk, VA – Sprinkler system helps contain warehouse fire; No injuries reported

Crews with Suffolk Fire & Rescue responded to a commercial fire at the Pacorini Global Warehouse in the 100 block of Industrial Drive Wednesday afternoon.  The call originated as a fire alarm with water flow from a sprinkler at 2:13 p.m.  Firefighters arrived at the warehouse to find moderate smoke coming from one of the facility’s back doors and immediately began an interior search.  The fire was contained to two large lumber packing crates with the sprinkler system active in the immediate area. Firefighters conducted a secondary search of the building after extinguishing the fire. The affected crates were removed from the warehouse.  The fire was called under control at 2:34 p.m. No evacuations were required, and no one was injured.  Crews remained at the scene to ventilate the building. The Norfolk Fire Department provided mutual aid with a fan truck.  The Fire Marshal’s Office is handling the investigation.

Huntington, VA – Sprinkler system activates in townhouse fire; No injuries reported

A sprinkler minimized damage and prevented injuries for a second time in weeks in the Greater Alexandria area, according to the fire department.

Fairfax County and Alexandria crew responded to the 2000 block of Huntington Avenue for a townhouse fire around 6:19 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9.

Firefighters found smoke coming from the back door and quickly extinguished a fire in one of the rooms. The residents were not home, and no one was injured.

A neighbor discovered smoke coming from the home and called 911. The home’s smoke alarms activated, while the fire sprinkler also put out a fire.

Fire investigators determined an incense stick ignited on an end table in the living room. The home’s two residents were displaced and accepted Red Cross assistance. Two adult occupants were displaced because of the fire. Red Cross assistance was requested and accepted. Initial damage estimates are $3,000.

A little over a week ago, a sprinkler system minimized fire damage at a Belle Haven high rise. The fire department reminds residents that sprinklers can save lives and their properties. 

Belle Haven, VA – Fire sprinkler system saves residents at high rise apartment building

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue determined a fire sprinkler saved residents and minimized damages at a Belle Haven apartment fire on Tuesday, July 31.  Fairfax County and Alexandria firefighters responded to the 5900 block of Richmond Highway around 10:02 a.m. at the 13-story high rise. By the time they arrived, the sprinkler system had already extinguished a fire in a fifth floor unit. There were no injuries.  The unit’s residents were not home at the time of the fire. Building residents were alerted by the fire alarm system.  Fire investigators determined unattended cooking on the stove started the fire. Initial damage estimates are $500. The two residents were displaced and declined Red Cross assistance.  The fire department reminds residents that sprinklers can save lives and their properties.

Alexandria, VA – Kitchen fire at apartment building suppressed by sprinkler system

A small fire at the Huntington Gateway apartments on Richmond Highway on Tuesday night was quickly contained, but resulted in two residents being displaced.  The fire was called in shortly after 10 p.m., and was contained to the kitchen in one unit on the 5th floor, according to a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue spokesman.  No residents or firefighters were injured.  The fire started in the kitchen and was the result of unattended cooking, the spokesman said. An overhead sprinkler put the fire out.  Damage was estimated to be around $500.

Charlottesville, VA – Overnight cooking fire at apartment building controlled with help from sprinkler system

An overnight fire forced some Albemarle residents out of their home. It happened shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday in a second floor apartment at 1648 Rio Hill Drive. Albemarle County Fire and Rescue believes it was triggered by cooking …. which activated a sprinkler system. Investigators say the damage to the property and contents totals $4000. There were no injuries, but the fire displaced two families.

Arlington, VA – Fire department credits sprinkler system for controlling 8th floor apartment fire

Arlington firefighters are working to extinguish a blaze at a Pentagon City apartment complex.

First responders were called to a building along the 800 block of 15th Street S., adjacent to the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, around 5 p.m. today (Wednesday).

Firefighters believe the blaze started on the eighth floor of the building, according to a tweet from the department, and they were able to quickly extinguish it.

There’s no word yet on any traffic impact or injuries.
