Canton, OH – Sprinkler system extinguished fire at hospital; No injuries reported

Canton Firefighters were called about 11 p.m. Wednesday to Aultman Hospital’s Bedford Building in response to a fire.

Jason Clevenger of corporate communications at Aultman said the fire occurred on the first floor in the office area.

Clevenger said no patients or staff members were injured.

The hospital issued the following statement Thursday:

“Around 11 p.m. last night, the fire alarm system was activated by a fire in a first floor Bedford building office area. The sprinkler system activated, extinguishing the fire, and the Canton Fire Department quickly arrived at the scene. No patients or staff were injured, and no services were affected.”

Columbus, OH – Fire in jail laundry activates automatic fire sprinkler system

A Franklin County deputy sheriff was taken to Ohio Health Grant Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation after a fire in the laundry room of the jail. A small fire in the laundry room of the Franklin County Corrections Center on Jackson Pike resulted in a deputy being taken to Ohio Health Grant Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation.Marc Gofstein, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said an industrial dryer in the facility’s laundry room caught fire around 7:30 a.m. Friday. The jail, which houses nearly 1,700 inmates, went into an immediate lockdown and a fire suppression sprinkler system kicked on in the laundry area.

No inmates were in the area or were injured in the incident, Gofstein said.Columbus fire crews also responded to the jail and assisted deputies in putting out the small blaze. All deputies in the area were examined by medics and one deputy was taken to Grant for treatment, Gofstein said. That deputy, who is not being named, is in stable condition. The jail remains on lockdown Friday afternoon. Gofstein said there is no visitation permitted and no transportation of inmates from Downtown to the Jackson Pike jail as cleanup continues.

Toledo, OH – Sprinkler system helps fire crews control warehouse blaze

Toledo fire crews were on the scene of a downtown warehouse fire Tuesday night. The fire happened at Morgan Linen and Uniforms located on 10th St. between Washington and Monroe. The blaze was a two-alarm fire due to the size of the building. Crews were able to keep the fire under control with the help of the sprinkler system and put the fire out quickly before it reached the roof. Crews believe the fire started on rubber mats that were stacked on metal racks.

Columbus, OH – Fire in server room at office tower put out with help from sprinkler system

A small fire in a computer server room was quickly contained Wednesday morning at the Rhodes Tower. More than a dozen fire crews responded to the officer tower around 10 a.m. Wednesday on a report of a fire alarm. Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin said there was a small fire in a server room on the 36th floor of the building. A sprinkler system helped put the fire out before most of the firefighters arrived on the scene, Martin said. No injuries were reported and the building is open. East Broad Street was closed for a short time as fire crews needed access to the street.

Steubenville, OH – Apartment fire contained by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

A fire at the Heritage Village apartments at 3010 Johnson Road was contained by a sprinkler, allowing city firefighters to quickly extinguish the flames on Wednesday afternoon. The fire department was called around 4:22 p.m. on Wednesday and found the tenant was able to safely make it out of the apartment. Firefighters reported there was heavy smoke on the second floor of the building. The occupant of the apartment was checked by an ambulance crew and released, the fire department reported.

Dover, OH – Sprinkler system contained fire at Dover Chemical until fire crews arrived; No injuries reported

A sprinkler system contained a fire at Dover Chemical early Tuesday, according to Dover fire Capt. Bryan German.

Firefighters called to the scene at 12:43 a.m. found smoke and fire visible in a five-story building of the plant at 3676 Davis Road.

Firefighters used water and foam to finish extinguishing the fire.

“It was determined that a mechanical failure in a hot oil pump had malfunctioned and caused the fire,” German said in a press release. “Damage was limited to the pump and a very small portion of some surrounding equipment. All the water runoff and hot oil went into Dover Chemical’s containment system as designed.”

German did not have a damage estimate.

No injury was reported to plant or fire personnel.

Dover firefighters were assisted by others from New Philadelphia, Sugarcreek, Strasburg, Bolivar, Wayne Township, Mineral City and Uhrichsville. Smith Ambulance also responded.

The fire was under control within about 15 minutes of firefighters’ arrival, according to Dover fire Lt. Joseph Minocchi. Dover firefighters returned to their station at 3 a.m.

Other departments were released from the scene about an hour after being called, according to Dover fire Capt. Brooks Ross.

Oxford, OH – Car fire doused by garage sprinkler system at Miami University

A car caught fire in Miami University’s North Garage near Farmer School of Business on Friday morning just before 10 a.m.

Haolin Xi, a sophomore Japanese major, noticed smoke coming from the hood of his Audi A4 immediately after parking in the garage. He exited the vehicle and saw the smoke had been replaced by flames. Xi poured a bottle of water on the fire, to no avail. He then flagged down a woman who called the police on his behalf.

No other vehicles were harmed by the fire, and it was quickly doused by the garage’s sprinkler system and contained by the Miami University Police Department (MUPD) and Oxford Fire Department (OFD) first responders. According to the notice posted on myMiami, one MUPD officer was treated for smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries.

Benton Hall, which is situated on top of the garage, was evacuated, but the fire alarm system did not go off and students were not notified until professors were told to evacuate the students.

Xi is unsure of what caused the fire to start.

College Hill, OH – Duct fire in air handling system at elementary school extinguished by sprinkler system; School in session next morning

A College Hill school suffered minor smoke and water damage after a fire Tuesday night.  Crews were called to Pleasant Hill Academy on W. North Bend Road just before 10 p.m. after an air handler reportedly overheated and caught fire.  Officials said the fire was contained and a sprinkler located in the air duct extinguished it.  The flames caused an estimated $15,000 worth of damage.  One classroom had significant fire damage and another had water damage.  No one was hurt.  School will still be in session Wednesday.

Fairfield, OH – Overnight business fire knocked down by sprinkler system; Fire started in cardboard boxes

Crews called for assistance at a fire inside a Fairfield business early Tuesday morning.  Firefighters responded to a fire inside Innomark Communications inside Distribution Circle just before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.  Fire officials say some cardboard inside the business caught on fire, causing heavy smoke inside the building.  A sprinkler system knocked down the fire and crews were able to finish putting it out quickly.  Fire officials say they called for extra crews as a precaution.  No one was injured.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Wyoming, OH – Fire in high school science classroom activates sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Students at Wyoming High Schools were dismissed early after a small fire broke out in a science classroom last Thursday morning.  In a note to parents, schools officials said the fire started around 9 a.m. and that no one was injured.  The Wyoming Fire Department responded and the fire was extinguished.

The school’s sprinkler system went off, causing wet conditions at the school.  Students were evacuated to the middle school, where they will be dismissed at 11 a.m.  “Students will be reunited with their belongings from the high school as soon as possible,” school officials said.
