Winona, MN – Fire at manufacturing plant contained by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

A pallet loaded too close to a radiant heater in the storage shipment area of Behrens Manufacturing caught fire early Friday morning, triggering three sprinkler heads and causing some structural and water damage.

The Winona Fire Department responded to the scene at 1250 E. Sanborn St. at 5:13 a.m. after being notified by the building’s internal alarm system, according to fire chief Curt Bittle. The department paged in all of its off-duty firefighters to total 18 responding.

The scene was cleared at 7:37 a.m., Bittle said, with much of the time devoted to clearing up water damage from the sprinklers that had kept the flames contained to the storage area. Firefighters put out what was left of the blaze upon their arrival.

There were no injuries and the fire was an accidental one, according to Bittle. A monetary assessment of the damages had not been done as of Friday morning.

After the crew conducted air monitoring to determine whether the building’s day shift could report to work, Behrens chose to cancel its 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift, Bittle said, but he expected the shift beginning at 3 p.m. would run as usual.

Winnipeg, MB, Canada – Sprinkler system controlled fire at fitness center before fire crews arrived

No one was injured after a small fire at a fitness centre on Portage Avenue Sunday morning.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said firefighters were called to the scene of a strip mall in the 900 block of Portage Avenue at about 7:57 a.m.

Smoke was coming from the eaves from Valentine’s Fitness and Weight Loss Centre, so firefighters went inside to launch an attack and the fire was quickly put out.

The building’s sprinkler system helped control the fire before firefighters got there, said the WFPS.

The building suffered minimal fire damage but the business saw extensive smoke damage, they added.

No one was in the building at the time, and the fire was caused by a broken bathroom fan. There are currently no damage estimates.

Maryville, TN – Sprinkler system extinguished fire at doctor’s office; No injuries reported

A small fire broke out in a doctor’s office on the third floor of Blount Memorial Hospital’s Physicians Office Building Wednesday.

There were no injuries, but the building was evacuated for approximately 90 minutes.

The fire began around 11:30 a.m. when a radiator lit up a nearby chair. The fire spread to the wall, but was put out by the sprinkler system before the Maryville Fire Department arrived.

Still, there was considerable smoke, Deputy Chief Mike Caylor said.

Because the room’s windows would not open, fans were used to blow the smoke into the building’s main atrium, where it was exhausted by the ventilation system there.

Firefighters monitored carbon monoxide levels throughout the hospital but found minimal readings.

“The hospital did a good job making sure we could get people out of harm’s way,” Caylor said.

Hospital spokesman Josh West emailed The Daily Times that the physician offices in the building have been closed to begin cleanup. Some patients who had appointments were rerouted to different offices, while others were rescheduled.

“We apologize to our patients who were inconvenienced,” West wrote. “While this incident was unfortunate, we’re grateful no one was injured. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Maryville Fire Department, and Maryville Police Department, both of which responded immediately to help ensure the safety of our patients, visitors and staff.”

Las Vegas, NV – Sprinkler system assisted firefighters in extinguishing fire in commercial building

Sprinklers and Clark County firefighters extinguished a fire in a commercial building several blocks west of the Strip on Sunday morning.

Just before 8 a.m., the Clark County Fire Department responded to a report of fire alarms going off in a commercial building at 4375 W. Reno Ave., just south of West Tropicana Avenue and South Arville Street.

Arriving crews found a single story commercial structure with smoke coming from the roof vents and doors. Because of the size of the building, firefighters called for additional resources, according to a news release.

Crews had to fight moderate heat and near zero visibility which hampered their efforts to locate what was burning.

Other fire crews were assigned to open the large doors on the rear of the building in order to improve visibility and provide a secondary means of escape should the firefighters on the inside need to get out.

A sprinkler system prevented the fire from consuming the entire structure.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Clark County Fire Department’s fire investigation division. Damage estimates are not yet available.

The owners of the business arrived on-scene while fire crews were still operating.

There were no injuries.
