Jacksonville, FL – Sprinkler system keeps condominium fire from spreading; Cause was lightning strike

Firefighters with Jacksonville Fire Rescue were sent to a condominium complex last Wednesday evening on the Southside.  The fire was sparked on the roof of a home at Montreux at Deerwood Lake on Touchton Road. News4Jax learned of the fire just after 5 p.m.  JFRD said the fire was likely due to a lightning strike. Embers from the fire dropped to the attic of the apartment, hit a sprinkler inside a home and melted it, which firefighters said likely helped the fire from spreading.  Two units were affected due to water damage. People living inside the units denied help from the Red Cross. No injuries were reported.

Kenosha, WI – Garbage can fire at nursing home contained by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

A small fire at a nursing home and rehabilitation facility is being investigated as arson.

The Kenosha Fire Department and Kenosha Police were called to Clairidge House, 1519 60th St., at about 6:15 p.m. Monday for a report of smoke in the basement, with the facilities smoke alarms on, Fire Chief Charles Leipzig said.

He said the fire was contained by a sprinkler system, with a sprinkler head activated in the bathroom where the fire began.

Kenosha Police said the fire appeared to be intentionally set in a garbage can in a basement bathroom. Leipzig said that it appears someone may have gotten into the building through an open basement door to set the fire.

No one was injured.

Des Moines, IA – Evening restaurant fire suppressed with help from sprinkler system

Des Moines fire captain Randy Jones said the grease fire began once a hot pan was transferred from a stovetop to a sink. Sprinklers installed in the ceiling put out the flames, but the eatery, located at 310 Court Ave., had to be evacuated and closed for the day — about three hours earlier than usual. The sprinklers went off at about 6:20 p.m. Thursday.

“We had quite a bit of water to remove,” Jones said. “The fire was out — it’s more or less just water damage. They need to have the sprinkler system activated again and they also need to have the health department come out and inspect everything before they reopen.

A couple dozen people were standing outside the more than 30-year-old Court Avenue fixture when the fire department arrived. Officials say they’re not sure how many customers were in the restaurant at the time of the fire.

Spaghetti Works managers said they plan to reopen the restaurant Friday.

Medford, OR – Warehouse fire controlled by sprinkler system; Fire kept small minimizing damage

A well maintained sprinkler system helps keeps warehouse fire small in Medford last Thursday.  At 7:53 p.m. Medford Fire-Rescue responded to a an alarm sounding on the 500 block of S. Front Street. When firefighters arrived they found a warehouse with the smell of smoke and the fire sprinklers were on.  Additional crews from Jackson County Fire District #3,#5 and Medford Police were called to assist.

Fire crews were able to locate the small fire and extinguish it quickly. They then moved on to getting the smoke out of the building.  “Early detection by alarm systems and a well maintained sprinkler system kept this fire small, resulting in minor damage,” MFR wrote on their Facebook page.  The Deputy Fire Marshall says it appears that the fire started outside near an old wooden reinforced garage door. The fire then moved into the warehouse and caught a shipping crate material that stored two air conditioner radiators on fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No injuries were reported.

Shawnee, OK – Fifth floor apartment fire put out with help from sprinkler system

An overnight emergency shelter was being set up late Friday night for half of the residents who live at Shawnee Towers at 1130 E. Independence, where a fifth floor fire was reported Friday evening.

What began as a fire alarm and evacuation of residents turned into more for those living on the north end, where water from the sprinkler system impacted every unit on that end of the complex.

One resident, who was outside waiting with her dog, Charlie, said she quickly evacuated and didn’t see any smoke until she was outside.

“When the alarm went off, I grabbed my phone, my wallet and my dog,” she said.

Whiles crews had the fire out quickly in that fifth floor unit, it was the water from the sprinkler system that prompted the decision to evacuate residents overnight.

Deputy Shawnee Fire Chief Andy Starkey said they were going to have to evacuate the entire north end “due to electrical hazards because of the water.”

Starkey, who said they were calling in the Red Cross to assist in getting that shelter set up for residents late Friday night, said they expected the overnight evacuation to involve 40 to 50 residents.

Residents on the south end were not impacted by the fire.

Cause of the fire was still undetermined late Friday night, he added.

The complex is part of the Shawnee Housing Authority.
