New London, CT – Kitchen fire at 30-unit apartment extinguished by fire sprinklers

Two people have been displaced after a kitchen fire broke out in a 30-unit apartment building at 73 Washington St. on Friday afternoon. There were no injuries.

Battalion Chief Jeffrey Rheaume said the fire was quickly extinguished after a building sprinkler system was activated, containing the fire to the kitchen from which it originated. The fire was called in to the department about 4:16 p.m., Rheaume said.

Rheaume said fire crews are still investigating the cause of the fire and the Red Cross is assisting those displaced. Their apartment has smoke and water damage, Rheaume said.

Dunkirk, NY – Sprinkler system at manufacturing plant extinguishes electrical fire

 An accidental fire at the Refresco plant at 1 Cliffstar Drive had city firefighters on the scene for two hours.

The Dunkirk Fire received an alarm activation call at 4:40 a.m. Friday. Upon investigation, plant maintenance reported smoke visible on the second floor of the plant office area.

Firefighters made entry and noticed the smoke condition. Hose lines were advanced and the fire was found in the ceiling above the second floor advancing into a third floor storage area.

The plant sprinkler system had activated and contained the fire to the general area of origin. Fire crews extinguished the remainder of visible fire and performed ventilation of smoke in the building.

East Dunkirk Fire and ALSTAR ambulance assisted at the fire with West Dunkirk Fire on standby.

Investigators from the City of Dunkirk and Chautauqua County determined the cause of the fire to be started by electrical wiring.

One firefighter was evaluated for a minor injury but remained on duty.

Los Angeles, CA – Sprinkler system holds fire in check at commercial building; No injuries reported

A small fire broke out Monday afternoon in a one-story commercial building in Chatsworth, but no one was injured.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire, which was reported about 1:30 p.m. in the 9600 block of North De Soto Avenue. The blaze was held in check by the building’s sprinklers and workers who used a fire extinguisher, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The type of business was not immediately available.

Thirty-three firefighters responded to the scene and fully extinguished the flames in about 20 minutes, according to Stewart.

Juneau, AK – Sprinkler system stops fire form causing serious damage to commercial building

Capital City Fire Rescue said a commercial structure would have sustained serious fire damage had it not been for a sprinkler system and fire alarm.

Firemen responded just before 6 pm to the 8000 block of Glacier Highway after the report of smoke in the building.

Crews said they spotted light smoke haze in a large portion of the structure as they arrived, minutes later.

The crews were able to isolate the sprinkler flow and clear the smoke and odor from the structure.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical appliance failure.

Firemen said without both systems, the fire would have been far worse.

Orleans, MA – Sprinkler system douses stove fire at condo

A sprinkler system doused a stove fire in a multi unit condo complex in Orleans Wednesday afternoon. The fire started on the second floor of the three story structure at 18 West Road around 2 PM. Firefighters had to ventilate smoke and mop up water. One occupant was evaluated by EMTs. The Red Cross was providing temporary shelter for three occupants displaced by the fire and water damage. Further details were not immediately available.

Greenville, DE – Fire caused by Electrical malfunction put out by fire sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Blazes damage Greenville building on Kennett Pike Wednesday afternoon.

Talleyville Fire Company responded to the scene around 12:30 p.m. at Greenville Center on Kennett Pike. They found smoke coming from the two-story, commercial building, Delaware’s Office of State Fire Marshal said.

Fire marshals say the fire was then extinguished by the building’s fire sprinkler system preventing the spread of the flames.

The fire was accidental and originated inside the ceiling of a second-floor office and was caused by an electrical malfunction of fixed electrical wiring, fire marshals said.

No injuries were reported and the fire caused $10,000 in damages, according to fire marshals.

Pleasant Prairie, WI – Sprinkler system keeps second-floor senior living apartment fire in check

Firefighters helped to rescue a resident of a Pleasant Prairie senior living facility Saturday, after a fire broke out at the apartment complex.

At 7:40 a.m. Saturday, Pleasant Prairie police and fire departments responded to the Prairie Villa Senior Apartments, 9500 81st St., for a report of a fire alarm that had gone off, according to a Pleasant Prairie Fire and Rescue Department news release.

Initial responding units reported smoke on the north side from a second-story apartment room and in the second floor hallway. Calls were received from both the fire alarm central station and neighbors of the building to the north.

The building’s sprinkler system activated inside the second-floor apartment room and kept the fire from spreading. Pleasant Prairie firefighters entered the room by way of the balcony using a ground ladder. The occupant had made their way to the balcony, where firefighters used an aerial platform ladder to rescue them from the apartment’s balcony.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where they were later released and reunited with family.

The remaining fire was extinguished shortly after that, at about 8:11 a.m. Crews remained on scene until 12:02 p.m., removing smoke, ventilating rooms and ensuring that the sprinkler system was restored. The village building inspection superintendent was also on scene to review building conditions.

Portions of the floor were the fire occurred and below were not habitable due to water damage. Residents that occupied other areas were allowed to re-occupy the building.

Building management personnel were working with residents that had no local lodging alternatives, while restoration efforts ramped up.

Pleasant Prairie Police and Fire Department members are also members of the Kenosha County Fire Investigation Task Force investigated the scene, and said the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

Departments from Winthrop Harbor, Zion, Newport and Beach Park, Illinois, assisted Pleasant Prairie Fire Department at the scene. Additional departments from Bristol, Salem Lakes and Somers also provided additional resources.

Kenosha Transit system provided two buses to aid in immediate shelter needs for evacuated residents. The Racine Fire Bells also responded to provide emergency service support.

Birch Run, MI – Fire sprinkler extinguishes fire caused by discarded cigarette in women’s bathroom at Emagine Theatre; No injuries reported

The Emagine Theatre posted on its Facebook page they will open Tuesday at 4p.m.

The Emagine Theatre in Birch Run was evacuated Monday night due to a report of a fire in a bathroom.

A firefighter tells Mid-Michigan NOW there was a fire in the women’s bathroom.

A sprinkler put the fire out and caused some water damage.

“No guests were harmed in the incident. A patron was smoking in the restroom, threw the cigarette into the trash and it caught on fire. Staff reacted immediately and the fire was extinguished. Emagine is expected to be open for business as usual tomorrow,” said Emagine Entertainment CEO Anthony LaVerde.

Los Angeles, CA – Fire at large commercial building contained by fire sprinklers; No injuries reported

A fire that burned for 49 minutes Saturday morning damaged a large commercial building in downtown Los Angeles before being extinguished by firefighters.

Crews responded to the one-story building with smoke showing in the 300 block of East 18th Street near Maple Avenue, just south of the eastbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway at 2:44 a.m., according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The building contained clothing and boxes in packrat-like conditions, Prange said.

“Fire attack searched for the seat of the fire in heavy smoke conditions in the large building, eventually finding it and extinguishing it, with help from the ventilation group on the roof to help with smoke conditions,” Prange said.

Fire sprinklers inside the building kept the flames from spreading, he said.

A total of 55 firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and knock down was declared at 3:33 a.m., Prange said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Mankato, MN – Sprinkler system stops commercial dryer fire; No injuries reported

Mankato authorities investigate the cause of a fire early Sunday morning.

The city says a commercial dryer fire started near 6:00 a.m. at 100 Raintree Road. The building’s internal sprinkler system was able to extinguish the fire by the time responders arrived.

The estimated damage cost is around $25,000.

According to the city, all occupants of the building got out safely with no reported injuries.
