Princeton, NJ – Fire at Princeton University chemistry lab contained to storage room by sprinkler system

Firefighters were called to campus early Friday morning to extinguish a fire that broke out in a third-floor storage room in the Frick Chemistry Laboratory. The building’s sprinkler system was activated and contained the flames to the storage room, where a firefighter was able to put them out with a fire extinguisher.

The cause was traced to a light fixture in the supply room that failed and ignited boxes of supplies on a storage rack, which held vials, pipes, and other chemical laboratory supplies but no hazardous materials, according to Assistant Vice President for Communications Dan Day.

A graduate student noticed the fire and called the Department of Public Safety at 1:39 a.m. Firefighters arrived on campus from the town of Princeton, Princeton Junction, the Princeton Plasma Plasma Physics Laboratory, Plainsboro, and Rocky Hill, according to a University statement.The building was briefly closed while firefighters were on scene but has now reopened.

According to Day, there is “a lingering odor in the area of the storage room” that cleanup crews are taking care of.

Water from the sprinkler system dripped from the third to the second floor, getting some papers and computers wet, but a University Facilities crew mopped up the water early in the morning. There was no significant structural or equipment damage in the building from the fire or from smoke, Day said.

Houston, MS – Sprinkler system keeps arson fire at high school from spreading

One person is in custody after a break in and arson at Houston High School Friday morning. According to Houston Fire Captain Jonathan Blankenship, the call came in at 2:22 a.m. Houston Police Chief Billy Voyles confirmed there was a fire and water damage to the school, as well as extensive vandalism damage to parts of the school. Patrick Nichols, 20, has been arrested and faces felony charges. He’s a recent graduate of the school and was still inside the school when police arrived on the scene.

Some of the vandalism includes damage to the school’s technology, which school officials estimate to be in the tens of thousands of dollars. “There was water damage. The sprinklers went off. There was a fire set in the old home economics room, and lots of glass broken, lots of technology destroyed,” Houston School District Superintendent Tony Cook said.

Cook says the busted technology will not only cost the district a lot of money but could hurt school testing, which is coming up soon. “The fire was started in one of the back rooms. They had a stove in the room. The subject piled some books on top of the stove and apparently turned the stove on to start the fire,” said Blakenship. However, the school’s sprinkler system kept the fire from getting out of hand.

Voyles says Nichols met an officer at the front door of the school and was detained. “He opened the door for the officers, and the officer didn’t know if he was an employee or whatever it was,” Voyles said. The motive for the incident is still under investigation.

Grand Forks, ND – Fire in university residence hall caused by unattended candle extinguished by sprinkler system

The Grand Forks Fire Department says the cause of the fire reported at Walsh Hall on the campus of the University of North Dakota on March 2nd.

The newly released fire investigation report revealed an unattended candle ignited a towel handing nearby. The 5 to 6 foot flames from the candle, towel and cardboard stored near the bed, activated the fire alarm and sprinkler system.

Fire crews say residents tried to put out the fire with a wet towel but were not able to. The sprinkler system was able to extinguish the fire.

The activation of the sprinkler system in the dorm room minimized the building damage to only $35,000 with $500 of personal contents lost. Walsh Hall is valued at $2.5 million and has a total content value of $750,000.

Ann Arbor, MI – Fire in mechanical room at University of Michigan contained by sprinkler system

A University of Michigan building was evacuated Friday afternoon when a fire in the mechanical room set off alarms and a sprinkler system inside.  The Ann Arbor Fire Department responded to the report of a fire in a mechanical room at Tisch Hall, 435 S. State St. at 12:20 p.m. Friday, March 1. The fire was out within 10 minutes, said Battalion Chief Derek Wiseley.  Tisch Hall is located on UM’s main campus and is connected to Angell and Haven Halls, according to its website. It is near the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

A fire in the cabinet of the mechanical room triggered the automatic sprinkler system, which contained the flames to the area until fire crews were able to respond, officials said. Wisely said fire crews helped ventilate the building and ensure the fire was out before clearing the scene at 1:07 p.m.

Manhattan, KS – Dormitory fire at Kansas State University extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

A fire at a Kansas State dormitory displaced about two dozen students. University officials say the fire early Friday started on the fourth floor of Wefald Hall. All students were evacuated for about three hours. No injuries were reported. Sprinklers extinguished the fire before firefighters arrived.

Manhattan officials say the fire apparently was caused by a faulty fan. University officials say the fire caused $5,000 of damage to the building and $3,500 of damage to contents. The coeducational dorm houses 540 students. It was built in 2016 on the west side of the Manhattan campus.

UPDATE: Students were allowed to return to their rooms after an early morning fire at Wefald Hall on the K-State Manhattan campus. The fire was first reported at 6:26 a.m. on the fourth floor of the Wefald residence hall, according to K-State Police.

MANHATTAN — No injuries were reported in a Friday morning fire at Wefald Hall on Kansas State University’s Manhattan campus. The fire was extinguished by the hall’s suppression system, according to the K-State Police Department. Students were evacuated from the hall and relocated to Kramer Dining Center. Denison Avenue between Claflin Avenue and Platt Street is closed for emergency vehicles.

Orlando, FL – Arson fire in high school bathroom suppressed by sprinkler system; No injuries

A 14-year-old was charged with arson, Saturday, after an explosion that caused a fire inside a bathroom at Timber Creek High School, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Orange County Fire Rescue officials say the fire activated the sprinkler system inside the bathroom, putting the fire out. Officials say a secondary sweep of the campus showed another restroom was also set on fire. Firefighters say no one was hurt. Deputies say the teen is a student at Timber Creek High School.

Lake Country, BC, Canada – Overnight fire at high school contained by sprinkler system

Fire broke out at a Lake Country high school overnight.  Lake Country Fire Chief Steve Windsor says firefighters were called to George Elliot Secondary just after 10 p.m. Friday.  A fire caused considerable water and smoke damage to a classroom.  The fire started in a waste paper basket and was contained by the school’s sprinkler system.  The school district had a restoration company en route as of late Friday, to mitigate the damage.

Evanston, IL – Sprinkler system controls off-campus residential fire near Northwestern University

Evanston Fire Department extinguished a fire that broke out in a residence on the 700 block of Emerson Street on Monday. EFD responded to reports of a fire at the house around 9:08 p.m. Firefighters arrived on the scene and found an activated sprinkler head, which had controlled the flames until EFD arrived on the scene to finish putting it out, according to a Tuesday news release.

Firefighters heard audible alarms and saw five residents evacuating the two-and-a-half story residence when they arrived on the premises, according to the release. Nine Northwestern students live in the building. City ordinance mandates that a single-family building converted to a multi-family residence have an audible alarm and sprinkler protection system.

“The fire alarm and sprinkler system worked exactly as designed, saving both lives and property,” Fire Chief Brian Scott said in the release.

Durham, NH – Fire in lab building at University of New Hampshire extinguished by sprinkler system

A small fire occurred on Tuesday at the University of New Hampshire’s Rudman Hall.  According to Dave Emanuel, the assistant fire chief in Durham, the fire occurred in a cleaning room on the third floor.  The call came in at approximately 9 a.m. for fire alarm activation with the alarm panel indicating water flowing in the building.

“The building is predominantly a lab building and on each floor there is a cleaning room with a glass cleaner and an oven for drying,” Emanuel said. “This was an insulation fire in the area of the glass cleaner. The captain had taken the room apart and determined the fire was out. It was declared under control at 9:50 a.m.”

The sprinkler system extinguished the fire and because the room has a poly-coated floor for the most part the water was contained to the room. But according to Emanuel, the drain isn’t big enough to handle the flow from the sprinkler so some water did run out into the staircase and there were a few other penetrations between the different floors.

“The most important thing is that everything worked as it should have,” Emanuel said. “UNH invests in fire alarms systems for early notification and suppression — and the system did its job,”  “We used squeegees to move the water toward the stairwells and vacuum it up,” Emanuel said. “We do the best we can for loss prevention.”

Due to scope of the cleanup, Durham Fire Department was assisted on scene by Lee, Newmarket, and University Police personnel.  Listen: Latest From the Newsroom. Emanuel said they returned Rudman Hall to normal operations at about 10 a.m. and crews cleared the scene at about 11 a.m. A second call for fire alarm activation and a medical call at about the same time, made for a very busy morning. “We were running in three directions at once,” Emanuel said.

Rochester, MN – High school fire held in check by sprinkler system, helping to limit damage; No injuries reported

Rochester Fire responded to a fire at Lourdes High School around 1:41 p.m. Sunday.  According to fire officials, the fire involved cardboard boxes underneath stairs near the auditorium in the high school. A student, David Poirier, used a portable fire extinguisher to try to extinguish the flames. Heat from the fire activated a sprinkler head, which officials say kept the fire in check.

Authorities say Engine Company 4 used extinguishers to completely extinguish the blaze. Crews had to evacuate the building to prevent smoke inhalation and ventilate smoke from the building. They say the sprinkler system limited damage and prevented injuries.

Fire officials say Lourdes High School is facing $5,000 in clean-up fees due to some water damage from the sprinkler system and limited smoke damage.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No one was injured in the incident.
