Sprinkler system contains fire at strip mall (Ogden, UT)

Ogden firefighters credited a sprinkler system for keeping a strip mall fire from becoming a major conflagration. “The sprinkler system did activate and extinguish the majority of the fire,” Deputy Fire Chief Eric Bauman said. While three people were evacuated from Beto’s, none was injured, Bauman said. “This is another example of the benefits of sprinkler systems in businesses,” he added. “The early activation of the business’ sprinkler system played a huge role [in preventing the] spread of the fire.”

Crews found the fire started in the employee bathroom, located at the rear of the store, but was extinguished by the fire sprinkler system, Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention Director James Mercready said. The fire sprinkler system helped control and suppress the “potentially catastrophic” fire, he said. A fire sprinkler head had activated once temperatures in the area reached 155 degrees Fahrenheit and once it kicked on, a fire alarm signal alerted the fire department of the fire, Mercready said.

The fire was caused when a ceiling light overheated, causing the contents of the ballast to leak into the light fixtures and create sparks that ignited a rack of clothing below it, Chief Dillon said. Fortunately, the sprinkler system effectively contained the blaze until firefighters could extinguish it, he said. “It did what it was supposed to do,” Chief Dillon said.
