Marysville, WA – Sprinkler systems helps control fire at retail store; Fire started in semi-truck attached outside

Firefighters were called to the Value Village store on State Avenue just after midnight Sunday. A fire was burning in a semi-truck attached to the store and had spread into the building, said Christie Veley, spokeswoman for the Marysville Fire District. Crews went through the store’s roof. It took about three hours to bring the blaze under control. A sprinkler system in the store helped limit the spread of the fire. The store was not open Sunday morning, but employees were working on clean-up and hoped to open in the afternoon. Value Village sells second-hand clothes, furniture and other household items. The Snohomish County fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, and plans to review surveillance video from the store.

Barre, VT – Quick thinking 5-year old; Quick acting sprinkler system assist firefighters in store fire

A quick thinking 5-year-old is credited with spotting a fire in downtown Barre that officials say could have been much worse. Meet Gabriel DeJesus, a five-year-old hero. “I saw smoke coming out of a chimney and I knew it was going to be a fire,” said Gabriel. The Barre kindergartener spotted a fire at Bob’s Camera and Video in Barre Saturday night.

“Just going for a drive and he goes, ‘Dad, there’s smoke pouring out of that building,'” said Jaime DeJesus, Gabriel’s dad. “It was a lot, and it was all white and black,” Gabriel said.  The family pulled over for a closer look, and they called 911. “I commend him,” said Barre Fire Dept. Dep. Chief Joseph Aldsworth.  “He’s great. He’s a superhero,” said John Biondolillo, the owner of the building.

Thankfully the shop had closed for the day so no one was inside. The building’s sprinkler system kept the fire contained to the store’s basement until firefighters arrived.  “I was watching all the fire trucks come,”  Gabriel said.  Bob’s Camera and Video is right on Main Street. Fire officials say that if the sprinklers weren’t working, downtown Barre could have seen much worse damage. “It’s in a row of block buildings here, so it would definitely have a potential of loss,” Dep. Chief Aldsworth said.

Investigators are still looking into what caused the fire. They say this fire should remind community members to check their sprinkler systems. “They need to be inspected annually by a reputable company that leaves a sticker,” Dep. Chief Aldsworth said. It also serves as a reminder that kids can make a big difference too.    

“I am super thankful that he saw that. I don’t know what he would have done if he didn’t notice it and tell his parents,” said Kaitlyn Mesler, the owner of Bob’s Camera and Video. When asked what it’s like to save people and businesses, Gabriel responded, “It makes me feel so good.”

Langford, BC, Canada – Early morning fire at paint store controlled by sprinkler system

A Langford paint store has its sprinkler system to thank for putting a stop to what could have been a devastating blaze. Flames broke out at Cloverdale Paint on Langford Parkway at around 4 a.m. Monday morning, according to Langford Fire Rescue.

“When we arrived there was heavy smoke showing from the building,” said Asst. Fire Chief Chris Aubrey. “The sprinkler system had just activated and was containing the fire, but we did have to force the front door and make entry, and put the fire out.”

It’s believed the blaze caused the store’s motion sensors to go off, activating the alarm. “Should there not have been a sprinkler system it would’ve been a very significant fire,” said Aubrey.  The cause is not yet known but the fire isn’t considered suspicious, investigators said.  Damage to the building is estimated to be approximately $75,000 and the store will remain closed for an unknown amount of time.

Lubbock, TX – Sprinkler system halts fire at Holland Gardens store

Lubbock Fire Rescue was called to the scene at Holland Gardens in Lubbock around 9:30 p.m., responding to a report of smoke at the building.

Fire officials tell us there was a small fire that was extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system. There was heavy smoke inside the Holland Gardens building and light smoke inside Tarpley Music next door.

Fire officials are working to determine the cause of the fire.

Lexington, KY – Fire at thrift and antique mall held in check by sprinkler system

Lexington firefighters are trying to determine what caused a small fire at the Peddler’s Mall on New Circle Road Monday evening.  The fire started in one or two booths at the back of the building. There were no injuries and it’s not clear how much damage was sustained, said Maj. C.J. Haunz. 

The fire started after 7:30 p.m. Haunz said the mall — which has individual booths that sell antiques and other goods — had a sprinkler system that kept the fire in the back of the building. Fire crews were able to contain the fire quickly, he said.

Crews were on the scene for a few hours on Monday night. The Peddler’s Mall on East New Circle Road has more than 700 booths, according to the Peddler’s Mall Facebook page. According to the Fayette County Property Value Administrator web site, the building was built in 1964.

San Bernardino, CA – Attic sprinkler holds fire at bay at downtown shoe business

A fire forced customers and employees to evacuate a downtown San Bernardino shoe business Wednesday evening.

“The facade burned with smoke extension into the building,” San Bernardino County Fire spokesman Eric Sherwin said. “The sprinkler in the attic kept the fire at bay, but still had active fire in a 60-foot section of the facade on the store front side.”

The fire was first reported shortly after 5:30 p.m. with several reports of smoke coming from the attic of Shoe City at 808 S E St.

“Shortly after the fire erupted, the sprinklers activated and the store was evacuated,” Sherwin said. “An attic fire was located and knocked down in 25 minutes.”

Fire investigators were on scene and no injuries were reported. Fire officials haven’t released the cause of the fire.

It’s unclear when the business will reopen or how much damage was caused by the blaze.

Madison, WI – Damage in furniture store fire limited with help from sprinkler system

Firefighters responded to a reported fire at an east side furniture store Saturday morning, a dispatcher said. The dispatcher said crews were called to the Slumberland Furniture store at 2201 East Springs Drive at 8:57 a.m. on a water flow report from the building’s sprinkler system. Crews found the building filled with smoke, officials said.  Firefighters followed the sound of water coming from a sprinkler to find the fire, since the smoke made it hard to see inside the building, officials said. Firefighters found several pieces of furniture on fire near the back of the store.  The fire was controlled by 9:10 a.m., after which crews remained on scene to ventilate the building, officials said. Firefighters used an airboat to help ventilate the store.  A preliminary investigation showed that the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault. A damage estimate was not available Saturday morning, officials said.

Schaumburg, IL (No Media Coverage) – Fire at IKEA store contained by sprinkler system

FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORTED – NO MEDIA COVERAGE ***  The Village of Schaumburg Fire Department responded to a call early morning (1:30 am) on Wednesday (1/18) at the IKEA in Schaumburg. Upon arrival our crews reported light smoke in the building. They were meet by building maintenance who stated the syrup machine started on fire in the first floor food court activating the sprinkler system. A single sprinkler contained the fire, and the building engineer was able to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher. The cause is believed to be due to a shorted electrical cord, and the damage was limited to an estimated $4,000.

Mississippi Mills, ON, Canada – Forklift fire at hardware store contained with help from sprinkler system

Mississippi Mills Fire Department responded to a fire at 476 Ottawa Street Monday January 16 at approximately 8:08 a.m. Upon arrival fire crews found a forklift on fire along with some building supplies. The operator of the forklift was taken to Almonte Hospital with minor burns and to be assessed.

The store was evacuated when the fire department arrived.

Fire was contained to the rear storage area of the main store with some smoke and water damage. The fire was controlled with help of the store sprinkler system and quick work by the Mississippi Mills Fire Department.

It has not been determined what caused the equipment malfunction and the dollar value of the damage. Fire is still under investigation.

Rockford, IL – Beauty supply store fire caused by unattended incense put out by sprinkler system

No one was injured this morning when a fire broke out inside a Rockford beauty supply store, a fire investigator said.

Rockford firefighters were called at 9:18 a.m. to the fire at State Beauty Supply, 4010 E. State St., according to the fire department.

Arson investigator Mike Schnaper said the fire began in the back of the shop. It was accidental, he said. Fire Division Chief Matt Knott said the fire was caused by incense left burning.

The fire was extinguished by the store’s sprinkler system and smoke and water damage is estimated at $10,000, according to the fire department.”

The damage was very well controlled by the sprinklers,” Schnaper said, but the shop isn’t usable at this time.
