Firefighters with the Houston Fire Department said they spotted smoke coming from the fourth floor of Houston Center, but the building’s fire sprinklers had already put out the flames. No injuries were reported.

Residents were allowed to go back to their rooms once the fire was contained and firefighters finished their inspection, about three hours later. “It’s imperative that a system comes on and puts a fire out,” he said. “With as many people on each floor of the building, without a sprinkler system, this could have been a major fire.”

Investigating, they discovered the attached garage was engulfed in flames. Sprinklers saved a home from what it could have been total destruction, according to West Dundee Fire Chief Randy Freise. The couple got out safely and no one was injured.

Peterson said the building’s sprinkler system helped suppress the fire and contained it to the room where it started, though there was water damage to some other rooms. “The suppression system put out the majority of the fire,” he said.
