Apartment Building, Residential Canton, OH – Sprinkler system assists firefighters in extinguishing apartment building laundry fire February 9, 2017 viking210 Residents of a building in the Mayfield Manor Apartments were displaced by a laundry room fire Saturday afternoon. The fire started inside a clothes dryer in a common laundry area on the fourth floor of 3830 11th St. SW. Cause of the fire remains under investigation. Firefighters were called to the complex at 1:39 p.m. Firefighters were told that people were trapped in the building and unable to see through smoke to escape. Crews found smoke had filled the fourth floor. Firefighters helped about 40 residents out of the building – starting with the fourth floor – into one of the adjacent apartment buildings. The smoke activated the buildings sprinkler system, which helped firefighters as they put out the fire. One resident was taken by paramedics to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Firefighters had to shut down electrical service to the building because the sprinkler system had been activated. Residents had to remain out of the building until service was restored. Damage is estimated at $20,000 to the structure and $10,000 to contents because of the fire, smoke and water damage.

Springfield Fire Chief Barry Helmerichs said crews were called around 2:20 a.m. for an automatic alarm caused by sprinklers being activated. The sprinklers extinguished the blaze, but the new building suffered some smoke and water damage, Helmerichs said, adding vandalism also was noticed. The Villas at Vinegar Hill is a four-story, 92-unit apartment development for residents 62 and older being developed by The Springfield Housing Authority. It’s being built on the site of the former John Sankey Hi-Rise at 401 W. Allen St. Nobody is living in the building yet, Helmerichs said.

When firefighters arrived there was no obvious sign of fire. The suspected cause of the fire is an unattended candle. According to the Tempe Fire Department, the fire occurred in a first-floor unit of a three-story apartment complex at 1100 E. Apache Blvd. Officials said the automatic sprinkler system kept the fire in check until crews arrived. The fire did not extend to any other part of the building, and there were no injuries, said officials. It is unknown how many people will be displaced, officials said. The cause is under investigation.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department responded to The Armstrong Apartment Complex formerly called, Burbank Commons just before 9 p.m. While there was no fire damage inside the third floor unit where the problem began, water from the sprinkler system damaged the apartment’s contents. Building managers were investigating how much water seeped into the first- and second-floor units. Red Cross was initially called to help out the displaced residents, but those services weren’t needed once the affected students found another place to stay for the night.

Nobody was injured, official said. Firefighters responded about 12:35 a.m. to the Avenue 8 Studio Apartments, 211 N. Eighth St., after several reports of smoke on the fourth floor, officials said. They found the sprinkler had already put out the fire in one of the apartments, officials said. The occupants were not home, and the cause of the fire has not been determined, officials said. Damage, estimated at $500, was confined to the mattress, officials said.

It happened on the 10th floor of the apartment building in the 1800 block of Fairfield Avenue and thankfully no one was hurt. Officials tell us the sprinkler system actually put out the fire before fire crews arrived. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Apartment Building, Residential Fort Dodge, IA – Sprinkler system credited with extinguishing apartment blaze January 21, 2017 viking210 A sprinkler system put out a fire in a Fort Dodge apartment building Wednesday night and no one was injured. The incident at Evergreen Estates, 1543 27th Ave. N., was reported at 10:27 p.m. Fire Department Capt. Paul Neeson said a fire ignited on the stove in a first floor apartment in the three-story building. He said the heat from the fire caused a sprinkler head to activate and douse the flames. “It did its job,” he said of the sprinkler. The fire was out when firefighters arrived. Neeson said most of the building’s residents evacuated it by themselves. The damaged apartment can’t be occupied, Neeson said Wednesday night, but all the other residents of the building were able to return their apartments. Neeson said the fire was caused by something being left unattended on the hot stove. Fort Dodge firefighters and police were on the scene until after 11 p.m.
Nursing Home/Senior Living, Residential Sherman, TX – Overnight fire at retirement community suppressed by sprinkler system January 20, 2017 viking210 One man was transported to the hospital overnight after a small fire broke out at the Renaissance-Sherman retirement community. Sherman Fire-Rescue Chief Danny Jones said the fire appeared to be accidental and was started by a male resident living on the third floor of the facility shortly after midnight. Jones said an unidentified item was left on or near the stove, which was powered on, and caught fire. “The facility’s sprinkler system worked as it was designed and basically put the fire out before our arrival,” Jones said. “The biggest thing we had to deal with was the smoke.” Jones said that the third floor residents exited their rooms on their own accord and were assisted to the opposite end of the building by staff as precaution. The male resident of the unit where the fire started was transported to a hospital for smoke inhalation and Jones said he believed the patient was released shortly after he received treatment. No other injuries were reported. The Sherman-Fire-Rescue Chief said the actual amount of fire damage was relatively small, but water from the sprinkler system caused more damage to the apartment where the fire originated and to several units on the floor below. Jones encouraged residents and homeowners to be mindful of their work while cooking and when in the kitchen. “Keep combustibles away from any type of heat source and don’t leave food attended on the stove,” Jones said.
Apartment Building, Residential, Residential High Rise Pittsburgh, PA – Fire in high-rise apartment complex contained to sixth floor apartment by sprinkler system January 19, 2017 viking210 One person was taken to the hospital after a fire broke out Wednesday evening at a high-rise apartment complex in the city’s Sheraden section. The three-alarm fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. at the Goodwill Plaza apartments on Hillsboro Street. According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, the fire broke out in a sixth floor apartment. The sprinkler system activated, and the fire was contained to that one apartment. One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. That person is in stable condition.
