Savannah, GA – Overnight cooking fire at senior apartment building contained with help from sprinkler system

Ten residents of the Rose of Sharon apartments in Savannah cannot go home Sunday after a cooking fire triggered the sprinkler system and flooded several units Saturday night. It happened just after 11 p.m. Savannah Fire Rescue responded to the Rose of Sharon senior-living apartments. They say a resident on the fourth floor was cooking when a pot caught fire and activated the sprinkler system. He was transported to hospital for smoke inhalation. The water damage displaced 10 residents. Two residents sought assistance from the Red Cross. Eight found temporary housing on their own. Savannah Fire Rescue recommends that you never leave food unattended while it is cooking. Always set a timer as a reminder and turn the stove and oven off if you have to leave the house.

Madison, WI – Fire in utility closet at apartment complex is held in check by sprinkler system

An automatic fire sprinkler in a utility closet kept a furnace fire in check Wednesday afternoon, with nobody injured in the Southwest Side blaze. The fire was reported at about 2:25 p.m. at the Stone Creek Gardens apartment complex in the 6700 block of Mader Drive, the Madison Fire Department said.

“Nobody was home when multiple passersby began seeing flames outside the apartment along Maple Grove Road,” said MFD spokeswoman Cynthia Schuster. Arriving fire crews found fire on the exterior of the building near a second-story balcony. “Ladder Co. 7 knocked down the exterior fire, and other crews went inside to investigate whether that fire had extended to the inside,” Schuster said.

Crews discovered an automatic fire sprinkler in the furnace utility closet had activated, keeping the fire from spreading into the apartment, containing the fire to the utility closet. All occupants of the building were allowed to return to their apartments, except for the people living in the affected apartment and the apartment directly below it.

Spartanburg, SC – Sprinkler system extinguishes apartment kitchen fire; No injuries reported

Three families were displaced after an apartment fire Friday evening off Powell Mill Road.

Una Fire Chief Jeff Hadden said his department responded to a kitchen fire at about 5:20 p.m.

The fire started on the stove in an apartment at Companion at Lee’s Crossing, which is just past Jesse Bobo Elementary School.

The apartment complex’s sprinkler system extinguished the fire, Hadden said.

That apartment and the two below it sustained water damage, affecting a total of nine adults and six children.

No one was injured.

The local Red Cross chapter is providing financial and other assistance to all of those affected by the fire who needed it.

Fayetteville, NC – Child playing with lighter causes apartment fire; Sprinkler system extinguishes blaze

No one was hurt, but four people were displaced after an apartment fire was started by a child misusing a cigarette lighter in Fayetteville Saturday morning, officials said. The fire was reported just before 9:15 a.m. at 309-2 Family Lodge Drive at the Family Lodge Apartments, according to a news release from Fayetteville fire officials.

The fire was extinguished by an activated fire sprinkler system located in a child’s bedroom, according to officials. “After the investigation, it was determined that the fire was caused by intentional misuse of a cigarette lighter involving a child,” the news release said. Red Cross was called to the scene to help the family of four. No one was hurt.

Springfield, MO – Fire at off-campus apartment building suppressed by sprinkler system

A fire started in the living room of an apartment last Thursday morning. The building is located in the 900 block of south Roanoke Avenue, west of the Missouri State University campus. A battalion chief says the sprinkler system quickly extinguished the fire. Smoke detectors woke up the people inside the first floor unit, they escaped through the bedroom windows. No one was hurt. No one else was evacuated from the apartment building which is new according to the fire department. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Grande Prairie, AB, Canada – Fire in apartment building contained to one suite by sprinkler system

A fire prompted an evacuation of Willow Place on Saturday evening but was contained to one apartment suite.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department received the call at 6:26 p.m. Platoon chief Tony Lutzmann said that the sprinkler system managed to control the fire and firefighters went in to ensure the fire was extinguished.

“There was a considerable amount of smoke throughout the building so the building was evacuated,” Lutzmann said, adding that they had a transit bus on scene to provide temporary shelter for the evacuees.

Operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Willow Place is a 57-unit apartment building for people with mental health conditions.

Lutzmann noted that the cause of the fire appeared to be “cooking-related” but added that the investigation was ongoing. He also offered advice on kitchen fires.

“Don’t leave cooking unattended and ensure you have something to extinguish the fire in case there is a kitchen fire,” he said.

Victim Services and the Red Cross also attended the scene.

Mesa, AZ – Sprinkler system limits spread of apartment fire caused by unattended cooking

One person was taken to the hospital after they may have fallen asleep while cooking and started a fire in Mesa on Monday night. It happened at the La Mesita Apartments on Main Street near Dobson Road. The Mesa Fire and Medical Department say the small cooking fire spread to the cabinets and that activated the building’s sprinkler system. Firefighters arrived and got the person out of the apartment. The victim was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, the fire department said. No firefighters were hurt. Only the adjacent apartments were evacuated.

Fargo, ND – Fire on 14th floor of residential high-rise contained with help from sprinkler system; No injuries reported

An automatic sprinkler helped contain a fire in an apartment on the 14th floor of the 22-story Fargo Lashkowitz High Rise. Firefighters were called to the fire at 101 2nd St. S. at around 6:15 a.m. Saturday. A man inside the apartment was removed to safety and evaluated by FM Ambulance. No one was injured. The Fargo Housing Authority had crews on scene to take over clean up before fire crews had cleared. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Temple, TX – Early morning apartment fire caused by bathroom exhaust fan is controlled by sprinkler system; No injuries

A sprinkler limited damage early Thursday after a fire broke out in an apartment in Temple, displacing seven residents. Firefighters responded just before 5 a.m. to a report of the fire at the Courtyard Apartments at 2315 South 1st St. in Temple. A malfunctioning bathroom exhaust fan started the fire in the second-floor apartment. Residents, alerted by smoke alarms, escaped safely. Fire damage was limited to the bathroom of the apartment, which also received smoke and water damage. Two first-floor units were also damaged by water. No one was injured.

Fire crews responded to an apartment fire call on Tuesday, January 15 at approximately 1 a.m. The crews arrived on scene and found the fire had been extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system. The fire had been caused by improperly discarded cooking coals. No injuries were reported and there was minimal damage to the outer building wall.
