Mountain View, CA – Sprinkler system activated for fire at Google office

An office building at Google’s Mountain View campus caught fire on Tuesday evening, resulting in approximately $200,000 worth of damage.

The blaze was reported at approximately 5:18 p.m. in a two-story building at 2081 Stierlin Court in Mountain View, the Mountain View Fire Department said in a Facebook post. Fire crews arrived on the scene approximately five minutes later after 25 employees had self-evacuated.

Fire personnel located smoke coming from a computer lab, where an overhead sprinkler had been activated. Crews were able to turn off the sprinkler and “remove water and smoke from the affected office space” without damaging the electronics.

Officials believe the lab caught fire after an “unattended electrical component” overheated on a workbench, the fire department said. Firefighters extinguished the fire and recharged the sprinkler system.

Google officials will be in charge of restoring the facility, the fire department said. The company did not respond to SFGATE’s request for comment.

Wyoming, MI – Sprinkler system activated for fire at church

Cleanup is underway at a church in Wyoming after a fire Monday night.

That night, board members of The Potter’s House noticed a glare beyond The Potter House Chapel’s windows. It wasn’t the sun they were seeing, it was flames.

“It’s like, ‘My goodness, the church is on fire,’” said John Booy, superintendent of the Potter’s House School.

Booy said the fire started in a waste basket near a sound board in the sanctuary, damaging the equipment. Fortunately, it was put out quickly.

“Our fire suppression sprinkler system worked really well because the fire started right underneath the balcony, which is all wood and it would’ve been no time, it would’ve gone up like a match,” Booy said.

Water from the sprinkler system caused some damage in the sanctuary and classrooms underneath it that are used for computer, art, science and music classes for the school that is connected to the church.

“There was an extensive amount of damage to the ceilings, which will all pretty much have to be replaced, smoke damage, soot is going to have to be taken care of, electrical has been damaged,” Booy said.

In the hours following the fire, Booy said The Potter’s House saw an outpouring of help from the community to start the recovery process.

“Everybody came out, got out of bed, drove over, even if it was from Holland or Muskegon, worked all through the night until 4:30 (a.m.) and beyond,” Booy said.

As restoration work continues, school is expected to begin as normal on Aug. 26. But it could take some time before the sanctuary can be used.

“We’re not going to be able to have our opening worship session in the church like we planned,” Booy said.

He said he’s thankful that no one was hurt and the fire wasn’t worse. He acknowledged things could have been much different if those board members didn’t notice the incident quickly.

“You have a meeting that you never have go that long, you leave and you see a light in there and you’re on it right away. So we were able to notify the fire department immediately,” Booy said.

Sonora, CA – Sprinkler system activated for fire at waste management facility

A fire inside a Cal Sierra Waste Management Transfer Station building in East Sonora early Sunday triggered an automatic deluge sprinkler system that helped keep the fire from spreading throughout the structure, though the station was closed to the public Monday.

Firefighters from multiple agencies responded to the fire just after 6 a.m. Sunday in the 19300 block of Industrial Drive in Mono Village, south of Mono Way, east of Sonora, Tuolumne County Fire posted to Instagram. A total of 11 engine crews, one ladder truck, two hand crews, three water trucks, and one bulldozer responded.

They found heavy smoke and active fire in the waste facility building, and the sprinkler system was already active and flowing. Firefighters remained on scene with Cal Sierra Waste Management representatives for several hours to ensure the fire was completely out.

The Tuolumne County Public Works Department said late Sunday that the transfer station would remain closed to the public Monday and is expected to resume normal service Tuesday.

“Residential and commercial curbside collection services are not affected by this closure and routes will be serviced on their regular schedule,” the department stated.

Tuolumne County Fire said agencies that responded to the fire early Sunday included Twain Harte Fire, Tuolumne City Fire, Sonora City Fire, the Cal Fire Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit, and Cal Fire units from San Bernardino, Tulare, and and San Benito-Monterey. The out-of-town crews are helping cover parts of Tuolumne County.

Wilmington, NC – Sprinkler system contains fire at commercial building; No injuries reported

Crews responded to a fire in downtown Wilmington at the Roudabush Building Tuesday morning, July 16, according to the city’s fire department.

Per the Wilmington Fire Department, firefighters responded to a business on S Front Street at around 11:15 a.m. The fire was contained by the sprinkler system, and nobody was injured.

As the businesses survey the damage, both The Husk and Yosake are closed.

“We are thankful for everyone who has already been a part of trying to get us back on our feet, and we will keep everyone posted as we move forward from this. We hope to see you soon,” a Yosake announcement states.

Newark, DE – Two separate commercial building fires contained by sprinkler systems; No injuries reported

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office determined that  two commercial building fires over the weekend were accidental.

The first fire  occurred on Friday at about 7:15 p.m. at the Tri State Battery building on 107 Albe Drive off Old Baltimore Pike, south of Newark.

Deputy firemarshal’s  went  to the scene and determined that an electrical malfunction with a lithium-ion battery ignited combustibles.

The fire was contained by the sprinkler system until the Fire Department arrived. Damage to the building is estimated at $75,000 and no injuries were reported.

The second fire was reported on  Saturday at around 12:30 p.m.  at the Delaware Solid Waste Authority, 1101 Lambsons Lane in New Castle.

Deputy fire marshals  determined the fire was caused by an undetermined heat source igniting combustibles inside of the building.

The fire was contained by the sprinkler system until firefighters   arrived. Damage to the building is estimated at $100,000 and no injuries were reported.

Kelowna, BC, Canada – Sprinkler system activated for car fire in underground garage

The sprinkler system helped control the blaze until fire crews could put it out.

The West Kelowna Fire Department was able to stop a car fire in an underground parkade from causing extensive damage to the building.

Crews were called to 4215 Gellatly Road South just before 6 p.m. on June 21.

The vehicle was engulfed in flames and heavy black smoke upon arrival.

The overhead sprinklers activated and helped to contain the blaze until the fire department could extinguish it.

Residents of the building were evacuated safely and were able to return to their unit once it was deemed safe.

Eugene, OR – Sprinkler system activated for pallet fire at business; No injuries reported

Fire crews responded to an early-morning blaze outside a west Eugene business early on Wednesday morning, according to Eugene Springfield Fire officials.

ESF officials said that firefighters responded to a reported trash fire at about 2 a.m. on June 5 at ABC Roofing on West 6th Avenue. Responding fire crews arrived to find a stack of wooden pallets on fire outside of the building and eight units were called to the scene, authorities said. Fire officials said that the heat from the blaze activated the sprinkler system inside and saved the building with damage limited to a small amount of fire damage and the rest related to smoke and water.

No injuries were reported in the incident and the cause of the fire is under investigation, fire officials said.

Oxford, ME – Sprinkler system activated for fire in large commercial building; No injuries reported

A significant fire damaged a large commercial building Saturday evening in Oxford.

Oxford fire officials reported responding to the blaze at 822 Main Street shortly before 7:30 p.m.

The structure accommodates several businesses.

Due to the smoke, races at the nearby Oxford Plains Speedway were briefly halted.

Fortunately, there were no injuries, and the building’s sprinkler system is credited with preventing further destruction.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Springfield, OR – Sprinkler system activated for commercial structure fire; No injuries reported

Eugene Springfield Fire crews are on scene of a commercial structure fire at 4660 Main Street in east Springfield, the fire department reported Thursday around 8:40 p.m.

A crew was notified of a fire alarm at 7:47 p.m. and arrived under 4 minutes, the department said.

“Engine 14 found an alarm sounding with smoke from a roll up door,” EDF stated. “The crew called for a full commercial alarm assignment bringing 3 additional engines, 2 trucks, 2 BCs and an ambulance.”

Crews made entry in to the building and were confronted by heavy smoke from a fire within a machine shop.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire which was held in check by the sprinkler system.

Crews are working to clear smoke and overhaul the fire.

There were no injuries and the fire is under investigation.

Vancouver, WA – Sprinkler system extinguishes arson fire at church

Authorities are searching for a suspect accused of breaking into a church and trying to start a fire. It happened early Sunday morning in Vancouver. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office says someone broke into the City Harvest Church by breaking a window. They then allegedly tried to start a fire inside the building, but a sprinkler system quickly extinguished the flames. Authorities are investigating the incident as arson.
